Well it feels good to finally be out of jail. As some know I caught a felony possession charge back in December of 2011 for possession of heroin (hey I'm a junkie what do you expect?). My lawyer is attempting to have me enrolled in st Louis drug court to keep me out of jail. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with drug court and could tell me what to expect. I have already completed impatient treatment on my own. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all. Much love :)

What to expect? Typically you'll have weekly meetings with the drug court specialists, random urine screens, requirements to attend X number of AA/NA meetings per week, (possibly) some community service and (possibly) some fines. You'll likely also be made to undergo an assessment to see what type of accompanying treatment you need - from counseling to outpatient to inpatient. As well, you might be put on a parallel probation, which, though they'll never admit it, is simply to milk you for a little more money.

You'll have just enough freedom that you could use during this all and not get caught if you do it correct, but you really do not want to do this. Drug courts usually reward graduates with dropped charges or even expungement, but if you screw up they will probably come down hard on ya. Suck it up and accept the fact that you lost and they won, and that your best interests are to get clean. At least for the duration of the drug court. This will be difficult at first, but more likely than not it will be satisfying all of the conditions of the drug court/probation while trying to maintain a job to pay off all of the expenses that will really test your patience. If you throw drugs into the equation, you'll never be able to get everything done correctly while maintaining the lifestyle is being a heroin user. Hence you should not use, and really it's like the drug court is giving you just enough freedom over your use to see if you make the right choices or not.

Check to see if your drug court allows for methadone and/or Suboxone if you need help quitting. Typically the drug courts will give you the help you need in the beginning to find a way to quit.

Well-said, RedLeader. I remember dealing with probation, fines and community service and electronic ankle bracelet house arrest for a year was a bitch (those were just my circumstances). But now I know what that's like, and I haven't had to revisit those dark corners of my life for about 6 years now. The gift is the journey, and not necessarily arriving at the destination... Although I understand this rather cheerful outlook is hard to employ when you're about to go through the judicial motions. You will survive, though, OP; promise.

I've been in drug court for like 6 months now, shit is pretty hardcore at first. I'm in Texas, but I had to go to these meetings/classes 5 days a week for 2 weeks, but then the classes decrease as you go into different phases as they call it. Always get random calls from my PO to take piss tests, community service, and have to attend NA meetings as well as the drug court classes. And gotta go to court so they see how you're doing.

If you use you probably will get caught eventually and be locked up for several months, then gotta go through all this shit again/ have to pay it again and if you are planning on using I would have just taken the prison time myself.

haha when I was cought with a little tiny bag of weed in school when I was 13 I had to go to curt. No matter how sorry I told them I was or why I did it and that I dint know the consequenses they freking expellt me from school for 2 fucking years I had to go to a private school! And my paretns had to pay 5 fucking thousand dollars. Id say for heroin it always depends on how much. I meen it must have been more than 0,25 grams because at that amount they dont really care. If though if concetrated it can kill you. Ether a fine with special classes or jail to come cleen. Sorry to tell you this but people from curt really have no sympathy for junkies or drugies.

^^ drug court is a little different then just going to court for a charge, though you do have to go to court, ALOT.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm hoping I don't have to go back to inpatient treatment again. I am already like 45 days clean so suboxone and methadone or out of the picture (thank God, I was on subs for 9 months and then my relapse netted me this wonderful felony charge). I was aware of the different phases but was not sure what each phase would demand from me. Thanks again for all the info, I intend to stay clean and pursue EMT and medic school at the local college. This girl I've been interested in for a while said that I'm looking a lot better now that I'm not some skinny malnourished junkie. I know it's early to think of relationships but it gives me a light at the end of this 11-18 month tunnel that her and I could possibly have something if I stay clean. I'm going to do this for myself and whatever else comes along is just icing on the cake.
The odd thing is that I kind of enjoy treatment and drug awareness classes as I am studying a degree in psychology with the aims of possibly having a career as an addictions specialist. I guess I'll take everything as some sort of blessing, now I'm more or less forced to be clean and this will give me the chance to actually make something out of myself. When I was an active junkie I came up with creative and well thought out ways to get high when the funds ran out, I guess it's time to use that same persistence and motivation to further myself. Thanks all, sorry for the wall-o-text. I'll try to put it into paragraphs. Much love to all of you. =D
