Drug addicts used as organ donors

What a SICK title for a headline

this is an excellent point. Seriously you can add the words "drug addict" to any headline to get more reads. This sensationalism stems from the idea that drug addicts are somehow "less human beings" than a cop who is high on life and power. It is simply a scheme to turn peoples eyeballs and get the writer more attention. This article is about an organ shortage and is saying that comprimises have to be met in some cases. I am a healthy young 23 year old male, and i am an organ donor. I am sure even though i have a history of drug abuse my organs would be very attractive to a 70 year old man with cancer. If enough people don't meet the organ requirements they set, they are setting them too high and see this by people dying untill they lower the standard. If the doctor has to ask someone to choose to get my organs because i take drugs, i would rather them not get any organs. Throw mine away if you think using drugs in any form is wrong and good like finding anything.

You are exactly right, when I saw that headline I wanted to puke!!! WHy????

My brother, 20 years old, died Friday of abrupt high dose xanax withdrawal.

He was an organ donor.

A woman in another state, only days from death, received a miracle, his lungs. She will now continue to be a Mother, Sister and Wife instead of being buried like my brother.

His Kidneys went to another state to save two more lives, his pancreas and liver stayed in this state to save two more lives and the many bone grafts, marrow transplants and skin grafts that he made possible will mean that for YEARS to come he, in death, will save lives and make life better for others.

He was a HEAVY user. We tried everything, but he was pretty sneaky, little rebel that he was, it finally took him before his life even started.

His organs were perfectly healthy and usable and I PROMISE you, any of you would be hard pressed to find a person who has inhaled more crap , shot more dope or snorted more powder. Not that that is a compliment to him, it is a verification that "drug addicts" (HOW FUCKING OFFENDING!!!!!!) can have perfectly healthy organs and THEY CAN SAVE LIVES!

That woman who received his lungs could have been any of your Mothers, Sisters etc. Would you really care that my brother inhaled a lot of meth and crack and weed????/ Or would you rather not be the one who buried a relative?

I would rather not be the one burying my brother...........but I did. And in his death he is saving lives.

Gone but never forgotten........JPR.

Sorry about your brother gumster!

Regarding the whole 'addicts' bullshit, alot of terminal cancer patients are pumped full of enough opioids to class them as addicts!

But oh no they're getting them legally and they're ill, not some dirty junkie who's organs aren't wanted as much as others! :|

I could understand a really hardcore alcoholic's organs not being wanted, but other less damaging substances, crock of shit!

At least take the organ, have it for a while and go back and get a healthier later, maybe! :\

This really is pure sensationalism. Using a drug addicts organs is perfectly rational. An alcoholic dies because his liver failed and he couldn't get a transplant. All the doctors have to do is throw out his rockliver and harvest the rest of the organs.

for soylent green.
Save the liver for Soylent Orange i.e. cat & dog food =D.

first of all its bullshit that a dr. will let you die to get your organs , simply a paranoid idea. (why would they let a perfectly healthy person die in order to try to make a sick person better????)

AND> Organs from drug addicts would probably be just as good as other people.... unless they had aids.

This article should be titled, "Drug overdose victims used as organ donors." My good friend was one of these statistics. :( He died of a suspected opiate overdose. He had a healthy liver, and I think some of his other organs were donated.

A serious shortage of organs means transplant surgeons are being forced to use body parts from drug addicts.

. In one case, a liver was taken from someone who had died of a paracetamol overdose.

Its all about money too I think. I was thinking like really fucked up doctors who only think about money would cut deals with other doctors for sugerys being done... I dunno... can't really explain it

but I'm sure its been done...

really?

well... if im that fucked and on life support or mangled up i would rather be dead

There should be rules for donatring livers etcv.. like.. I do want someone to live longer, unless theyre an alcoholic and have had history of sex and/or violent crimes..
seems fair to me..

btw im a full organ donor

it is not unheard of that people who receive organs from donors change some of their patterns.... the newly implanted organ has needs too... and past habits it would like to continue in its new host (body).... hence a vegetarian with a carnivore's implant kidney might find themselves craving a burger... a person's temperament may change..... and they might also develop cravings for alcohol or other drugs that they did not previously have, if the implanted organ had a 'habit' ...

yeah but if first person who used it abused it so much they died (like the guy who died of an APAP OD and they used his liver), why would it even work at all in the second person?

It didn't say they used his liver anywhere. That was probably trashed along with his kidneys.

Holy christ- yeah it did. My bad. And shocking- too. I can't believe they'd do that. What does one die from in a massive APAP overdose? I thought it was liver failure, but something else must cause death sooner. Surely they wouldn't use a liver that had caused death when it shut down. I'm certain no doc would do that- since it'd just cause death once implanted.

I wonder if I donated my blood if the receiver would get a buzz?

That's a good point. I also heard that St. Peter will not allow you into Heaven if you don't have both kidneys. 8) 8) 8) 8)

a damaged organ is better than no organ so i think people should stop fucking whining. i';m a proud organ donor andi hope someone gets to use every fucking organ in my body. i'm a drug addict an an alcoholic but i think a patient would definitely choose my faulty liver over no liver at all and dying.

If a person organs functions correctly, then I don't see why it should be problem to use those organs. People need to get the fuck over drug stigmas, especially if it means life or death for a person.

well, religion is the opiate of the masses.... i don't know about that shit. what i do know is that i have worked around enough docs to see this trend.

sorry but i know if i was dying and a doc came in and said "well you can die an agonizing death in a couple days, a week or two if you're feelin lucky, or we can give you a dope head's kidneys, but he did do a lot of dope i'm tellin ya but the choice is yours!" i'd be goin for the doped up kidneys and i feel that most would be doing the same? a not perfect organ > no organ at all in most cases...

I can understand everybody here asking WTF about the doctors giving someone the liver of a patient who died from an APAP OD, but do you really think you know more about it than a transplant surgeon who is there? You guys saying the docs are idiots are making me laugh. Do you really think they would put a liver in somebody that didn't work? Obviously it was better than nothing.
