trying to do anything can be such a pain
you plot and plan, then fear failure
should I go converse? will she brush me off?
I don't think this idea will ever pan out
the application process is so fucking long
and fermented grain tastes to good
forget it man, life is hard
but drinking whiskey is easy

note to reader: An insidious beast to be sure..this doesn't reflect my whole world view. It's healthy to mean that.

i love this.

maybe it's because i'm drinking a glass of single malt with a few cubes of ice at the moment.
I love my whisky and I can see the message in there. It can b easy to get lost in its magic.

nice one.

First, I want to comment on this poem as a writer. What I like about this is the lack of explanation. At first I was like: “Well, who is this third-person 'she' character, and what is the vague 'this idea' and what is 'the application' referring to." Then I thought about it, and realized that the whole point of the poem is about how the speaker is drinking whiskey to avoid “trying to do anything.” Therefore, as a reader, the lack of understanding and acknowledgment puts me in the same situation as the speaker, which is an interesting and successful device.

Overall, though, maybe you could even expand a bit on that vagueness, or bring up even more nebulous issues that you don’t ever clarify. Or perhaps you should just leave it as it is, which would be fine too - maybe the best option.

Now I want to comment on this as a drinker of whiskey and as a Bluelighter. I agree completely with you. I drink every day, man, but I also use other drugs that make me just not fucking care about anything (i.e. benzos, opiates, cannabis, etc.). And I agree that drugs/alcohol are the easy way out. Your poem is fun and upbeat, sort of – but in the same way Wordsworth's “life is beautiful” poems are upbeat. Wordsworth, when he is celebrating life and youth in his poems, is secretly implying that death is inevitable, in any proper reading.

I think you are secretly implying, perhaps, that reality and all its bullshit will eventually have to be dealt with, and the easy way out is never the final way out. As Robert Frost said, “The only way round is through.” I’m dealing with similar troubles, man, and either I will sink into this abyss and end up nowhere (or worse), or I will go through.

Sorry. Was that too personal for Words? Or was I too critical of the poem? If so, delete my post. I won’t mind. Honestly.

thanks for the feedback everyone, I truly appreciate it. Leiphos: thank you very much for the detailed complement and critique. My original impetus for the work came from sitting around while drinking whiskey and thinking to myself, 'shit, some people can't really drink and do productive things instead..but for me, drinking whiskey is a piece of cake.' Its just so much easier than trying to accomplish anything. But you're right that in the end, I do strive to accomplish. Hopefully my demons don't prevent that.

As for the critique and personal nature of you post, I would say that the current words staff encourages such helpful responses. So, thanks again :)

Far too easy. I hear you, Mehm.

Glad to see you spelling it the Scottish way. But you realise ice with a single malt is sacrilege? (A lesson I learnt while in Scotland) :D

^ I know the rules ;)

IMO - Glenfiddich 12yr needs it, makes it much smoother, not all require ice.
