Dope

Yes, which is one reason meth is called "dope" on the west coast and heroin is called "dope" on the east coast.

I think calling meth "dope" is stupid because for a large part of history, "dope" referred to heroin exclusively, but that's just how it is in some parts of the country.

I always thought of the negative connotation. Growing up in the 70's and seeing that public service announcement on television: "Why do you think they call it dope?" Then again, Trailer Park Boys call weed dope. Cool link, Hopeless Soul! (moving to Drug Culture)

You're an idiot , doop means to dip in water in dutch

Well I think 'idiot' is a bit harsh in this particular scenario.. The dutch word is actually 'doopen', But my phone's auto correct has a mind of it's own.. According to the link I provided, seeing as I don't speak that language... But yes, you are correct, it does mean to dip, but if you read the article in the link I posted, you'll see how/why doopen was the root word for the termanology.

Stroop is the dutch word for thick syrup. Not doop. =D A 'doop' is a baptism.

(I'm Belgian with dutch being my maternal language.)

Yeah that's what I initially wrote, my brain got ahead of what I was typing, I corrected myself in my next post..

I think we're getting a little side tracked here, on what this dumbass American (me) thinks a foreign word translates to.. I could be wrong on it's meaning, although I don't think I am. But the whole point of why I said doopen in the first place, is because that's the initial origins of the word 'dope', according to the link I provided above. You should give it a read, it's actually quite interesting. Yes I initially said it meant "thick syrup", I was wrong about that, it means to dip, and I knew that when I was writing my post, but you know how the brain works, it starts connecting the dots for you and before you know it, you're writing things down that are 2 steps ahead of what youre tying to explain.. But the entire purpose of this thread was to decipher whether or not the word 'dope' had any correlation to the word 'dopamine', and that has been answered. It is only coincidence.

thanks for all the replies everyone! to be honest i made this thread when i was drunk af and totally forgot about it
but was legit curious to see if there was any other reasons behind it - in the UK being a 'dope' or 'dopey' means to be stupid or slow.
the taxonomy of colloquial words is vast.

is this serious? lol. of course it is. how does someone with over a thousand posts not know that :P

ever heard the phrase 'there's no such thing as a dumb question'?
and i believe there's another which goes something like 'you're a sarky dickhead'. :D
