I think they were connected by the fact that they were SUPPOSED to meet. Many of them had the urge to cry (remember the guy that got his eye shout out?)...
It was almost as if Donnie had 2 FATES ... not 1 ... and it was up to him to decide ... on the one end, he was to live, but be without those he loved... on the other end, he could die, and preserve those he loved.
He was given the luxury of seeing life in one choice and then having the choice to change it. He changed it... but maybe since he had 2 fates, then it was destined that the other characters would also share 1 of 2 fates... since the one was deleted by Donnie's selfless act, then maybe they subconsciously knew what their fate was supposed to be.. or maybe they dreamed it all.... knowing that they killed some girl and then got shot.. or got busted with their child porn... or died in a plane crash (the mother may also know that it was the wing of her plane that blew up that killed her son - what a heart wrenching thing to know!), or that they were hit by a car and killed....
All-in-all, it's sad, because the movie follows the traditional "do bad things and it catches you and you suffer"..... but then Donnie's sacrifice changes that...... Everyone is suffering, but not everyone deserves it.
A truly sad movie.
