Does tapering actually work if you have been using non stop for 10 years?

Does tapering actually work if you have been using non stop for 10 years? Anyone with personal experience? From what I've read over and over withdrawing from 100mg morphine equiv a day is the same as 500mg morphine/day habbit. I assume if I could taper completely then it would make a difference, but I honestly don't think that is possible but I could probably reduce to about 120mg/day habbit (3 doses 40mg morphine equiv or 1 24mg exalgo or 3 8mg dilaudeds spli). And yeah it wouldn't be easy but I think I could do that (or let me say this, I have done that but going lower always seems to put me into withdrawal and while steady on that dose my body isn't steady. It's like withdrawal light and it's hard to ignore).
