This is sure to cause some good discussion.

Does orally consumed Cannabis need to be combined with a lipid, (fat), AND heated before it is consumed or can it simply be combined with a lipid and consumed?

What are people's personal experiences?

I have heard the story about how cooks perpetuated the legend by insisting heat be used to make sure the addition of fat was made.

From what I understand THC is activated by heat and so for instance, if you want to eat and get high the best way of doing it is transferring the THC into a lipid.

I'm assuming if the heat isn't there then all you have is the fat and the cannabis still completely separate.

I think if you leave the weed mixed with butter or nutella or another fatty substance for three or four days then it's the same as cooking it, but why would you not want to use heat?

Heat isn't necessary, but it's a catalyst that increases the rate at which the two substances (THC and lipid) will combine and how much the lipids will be able to hold/bind to.

Without heat, though, the same process would occur, just much more slowly and it wouldn't finish as completely as it would with the addition of heat.

That makes perfect sense.

heat decarboxylates THCA (acidic form of thc which is not very active, if at all) to the THC we know and love from ganja smoke (very active)

I have used the same recipes same buds/hash to make edibles and when they were cooked for under 15 min at low boil the effects were minimal at best.

This.
