Does holding pot smoke in lungs make you higher? cuz i been holding in my smoke for allmost as long as been smoking but is there any scientific evidence that says it works?

I believe Ed Rosenthal did a study and they found that after 9 seconds there was no point in holding it in

According to the cannabis harm reduction info from TRIP (toronto raver info project), 95% of the cannabinoids in a hit of marijuana smoke are absorbed in a regular inhale/exhale with NO holding. Therefore, they recommend against holding entirely. To get a copy of this data, go to their drop-in centre on W Queen St, Toronto, ON.

i think this could be one of those 'everyone has a different answer' things, because i've seen a whole bunch. i couldn't find the thread, but i'm damn sure that bigtrancer posted something (in aus drug discussion) a while back saying that research proved that anything more than *three* seconds was useless.

so, so far, from only three replies we have "not at all," "three seconds," and "nine seconds". who knows...i guess just hold it in as long as you can, weighing it up against how much you love your lungs :)

THC is a vapour when smoked, it is absorbed into the lung tissue virtually instantly, the only effect you get from holding the smoke in for any extended period is that you absorb more dangerous carcinogens from the heavy smoke particles.

Yeah but buggered if I can be bothered looking for the links, I'm pretty sure it is backed up by the Australian Medical Association, they don't approve of drugs but have a quite enlightened approach to harm-minimisation.

i wonder how one could even measure this.. i suppose by taking blood samples or something.

there is probably a short amount of time needed to allow the most thc to come in contact with lung tissue. if i inhale and exhale quickly i feel short changed, but don't notice a big difference after much more than a second

I think holding it for a few seconds would allow more THC to be difused into your blood through the lungs. This would exponentially decrease every second, so it would serve no purpose holding it in for a few seconds. Ofcourse this is only my theory and I could be off the mark here. Good question....

I don't know about scientific fact but i definitly beleive holding it in will increase your high. Don't bother if you have plenty of pot but if you just got a little bit definitly go for it

there does seem to be a very noticeable difference between not holding it in and holding it in for 3-5 seconds...

Well...

Well, according to my Drugs and Behavior Class, holding it in for 27 seconds absorbs the maximum amount of THC. I don't see why this book would lie, as it is a college class, and any information would probably be biased in the other direction. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I woke up this morning with a bad hangover, and my penis was missing again.

"Increasing" your high could just be due to the lightheadedness caused by lack of oxygen to the lungs.

Unless that is ENTIRELY placebo, then that is b.s. Lack of oxygen to the lungs can cause lack of oxygen to the brain (brain damage) but I don't think it's going to increase your high. I've almost passed out b/c I held in a hit long enough, but it didn't make me feel like I was fuckin' ripped just b/c I felt lightheaded. Well, just my input on the matter, so take it as you will... Time for some buffalo jerky (ahhhh) and a cig.... Laaaayyyy...

if i heared right, THC breaks fully after 10 seconds. so holding it more than 10 seconds woun't be very much affective..

i hold it for like..5+ sec. works everytime;)

i don't care what anybody or any studies show-- i get higher if i hold it in longer. its not "light-headedness" it's- WOW- i still have like this whole bowl left and i am ripped"

been smoking pot for 12 years and strictly nugs (KB, 'dro, crip) for the last 7-8.

im not sure about holding it in, from what i understand once the fire touches the green, the THC is vaporized and that only takes a few seconds to be absorbed by your lungs.

That's why when you give people a shotgun, the smoke has to come from your mouth, and you can't inhale it and give them the leftovers cus they will be getting smoke with no THC.

Honestly, I've noticed a difference in length over the years, but only up to 3-6 seconds. In other words, if you hold it past 3-6 seconds you won't get higher, but holding it 3-5 seconds gets you higher then when you let if out all the way...

more then anything, i've noticed it's not holding it in, but when you get all the smoke in your lungs, keep inhaling fresh air, or toking with the carb open, so that your lungs are filled to the tippy top..hold that for 5 seconds, and release slowly..if you feel like coughing, go with the flow.

Because one thing I do want to mention is that I have observed truth in the saying "you have to cough to get off" I've taken monster tokes that have caught me off guard and made me cough for 5-10 minutes straight and after one hit been pretty toasted..when normally my tolerance would have held up and even an entire bowl wouldn't get me that high.

Again when you cough you don't get oxygen...it's like holding it in I guess. We need some expert opinion i think.

i dunno about about scientific facts or anything like that, but ive smoked with TONS of different people, and everywhere ive been and with all the people ive smoked with, a lot of them would say somethin like "inhale, count to ten, let your head spin, exhale" ... i usually hold it in for about 10 or so seconds... after that, whether or not it actually is, i think its just pretty pointless....
