So.... is it me or does anyone else feel like deep house has no place on the dancefloor........?
I've been watching this movement take grasp of nerely every club that plays house.... well, deep house AND prog house (even less energy if you ask me)...
Deep house seems to be loved on the dancefloor by
those who, quite frankly, no longer likes to sweat... Their clothes/hair may get ruined.... I dunno.... but more and more, I see people conversing and bobbing their heads when deep house is played and rarely ever actually dancing... when the dancefloor does get more rowdy, it's usually when something alittle harder is thrown in...
I dare say that deep house and prog house may
join forces to create a clubland that doesn't dance.
On a home stereo... in a car... on a walkman.... yeah, deep house is wonderful to listen to.... but on the dancefloor??? I started this thread in another message board, and now I'm wondering how you guys feel about it....?

I don't see why not.
Granted I wouldn't want to listen to a Deep house set at 12 'o clock on a saturday night in a night club, but I think as the night goes on a more mellow vibe would be better since you're all kindsa worn out, but you still wanna be up dancing.
Every Dance Genre has its place on the dance floor...just at diffent times. Its up to the promoters (especially) and DJ's to make sure everything flows right.

if placed right in the night, which is late in the line up IMO, then yes. I'm all about having high energy music on for most of the night though.

It has it's place. I'm not real big on it myself, but if you are into a more mellow, spaced out experience it's a good thing.

^^^ that's just it, does that "spaced out" vibe belong on the dancefloor at a club at 1:00 am in the morning???

I would say more around 3 or 4 in the morning, but you hafta remember that not everyone wants to hear 140+ BPM music pounding in their ears and have to dance as fast as a chipmunk on crack. :)
Energy doesn't just come with the speed of the music. Sometimes its the soulful vocals, or that beautiful sax solo that gets your booty shakin'. If fact, you can be really creative with your dance steps to slower music, but at the same time, you can pull off simpler moves and not look out of place.

i agree 100%. It's all about the subtlety, the flow. Music does'nt always have to be bangin-super-fast hyper-spastic for it to have ENERGY and DYNAMIC BODY. Then again, if you had a deep set right after a high energy set, it might be a little bit of a letdown... it's all in the placement.

yes, prog house has ALOT of energy, if you've ever seen mara or howells spin, you will see that it makes people dance more than any of your trance or breakbeats :)
slower and groovier music inspires dance as much as the faster harder music

Problem is that if you only catch the beggining of a deep house OR prog house set (which most short attention span people do...impatient)...then you will not catch the 'energetic' part of the set.
Atleast that has been my experience everytime I have seen a GOOD Deep House or Prog House DJ. It's about first warming things up, maybe teasing a bit...but mostly just getting a groove going and then the creativity steps in and blows the minds of those that can 'hang with it...or put a little effort into actually 'listening''...hehe
I don't believe deep house and prog house is going to build clubland without dancing.... I believe it will educate and show the value and power that subtlty contains. The music will become more intelligent and more diverse...
I consider myself a 'progressive' DJ...but I play Tech-house, Techno, Tech-progressive, Trance-progressive, Breaks-progressive, Nu skool, Tribal progressive, Tribal house, filtered disco house, and on. It's about molding diversity into a single form of sound... Of course I'm not a master, but that's the way I see it.
It is also true that when there is more space in between the beat...it allows for more time to act on top of the basic 'boom, boom, boom'.. for dancing of course.
I find myself being able to dance continually for hours upon hours to progressive....but with the harder faster styles...I am more spurty with my dancing and less continual.
I like music that is thought provoking while at the same time danceable. Music is about attitude and expressions. I love all forms of electronic music...As long as it's got some effort to it and some heart behind it...I will feel it.

yeah, i've heard Howells.... and provided he repesents correctly in Ohio this year, he's my fave Dj of the moment... but what I've heard him play live wasn't prog house... granted there were some proggy records up in it, but there was alot of techno up in it, too... And, arguably, that's when the energy level peaked... during a harder edged techno record ...
But the MAJORITY of 'prog Djs' that I hear, they tend to stay in the realm of prog house... and it's boring... sorry. It's boring. There IS no energy on the dancefloor. Again, maybe that's just Chicago and Indy (the only places I've been in with prog Djs)... so I don't know about like another city that may be BIG with prog... THEY may be able to feel that energy without resorting to a harder edged house/techno/trance record... but I haven't seen it.
But back to the discussion on deep house.... ;-)

When a dj comes on at 1am and starts spinning Deep House, it totally kills the vibe and the dancefloor suddenly slows down and clears out.
Mark Farina, Doc Martin, or Satoshi Tomiie is alright to listen to when I'm driving from LA to San Diego, but it's not what I want to hear on the dancefloor.

granted deep house isn't pounding the entire time, but it does have it's build ups in it's own way. you just haven't heard some great deep house sets then. To me deep house is way easier to dance to, has way more feeling than progressive house and is way more moving with some of the vocals.
haha and to think a year ago there was no way you'd catch me listening to deep house.

^^^
hahahaha! damn, he just went old school. I love some Satoshi and progressive house. As a prog house dj, I would like to ask what is it about progressive house and deep house that does not inspire someone to dance?

It's kinda boring, lacks energy. It's interesting to listen to.....but I don't go to clubs to "listen".

Absolutely. Deep House is all about the music touching your soul, lifting you up, and promoting both a positive vibe and atmosphere. Despite the fact that the music isn't "banging", it still can touch you in such a way that dancing to it seems like your ultimate expression of how much you enjoy the beauty in the music. People that are bobbing there heads are either stoned out of their mind or completely exhausted...
I think the problem today is there are to many Deep House Dj's out there that just don't know how to carry the vibe along. (As in other genres as well)
Go see Miguel Migs or Little Louie Vega spin and I guarantee the dance floor will be going off...Deep House Heads have Soul!
And dancing to Mark Farina is the shit, no SF house DJ can work it like him.

I'd say Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, and David Alvarado know how to work it properly. And having caught Migs and Farina live a number of times, i must say they drag quite an attractive grooving crowd. The old term 'beautiful people' comes to mind, and this is about beautiful people dancing to beautiful social warm uplifting house music, the matriarch of electronic dance music. It and disco built the floors we dance on, for good reason. I'll chime in and agree that energy is not all about speed, it's about getting high, especially on a Sunday afternoon patio bbqing the day after or for a sunrise set or a warmup 9pm set.
