Yes they are still used in modern medicine. I see no HR value here, they've largely been replaced by the MUCH safer benzodiazepine class of drugs, but there are medical situations where a barbiturate is preferred, or is the best available medications in many 3rd world countries, using stuff like phenobarbital.
In the USA, I know that Seconal (secobarbital) is prescribed for extremely treatment resistant insomnia but for the most part, no, people don't use these drugs since they are so much of a risk when it comes to combining with other CNS depressants which is usually something a person is used to doing if they're even being considered for a Seconal prescription. Besides this, it's used still for lethal injections and physician assisted suicide (PAS) in the two? maybe three, but last I checked, only two states support physician assisted suicide. It's supposed to be a really humane way of doing it. Do some research if you want, but this is a harm reduction focus forum not a lets-talk-drugs-and-what-can-be-prescribed emporium.
