Doctor says Midazolam and Codeine are safe?

I have a dental appointment where I need to be sedated, the dentist said the sedative is Midazolam. I'm currently addicted to Codeine but she said it would be okay to have both. Is this true? I've had more than one experience where a doctor has given bad info. The way they're talking it sounds like I'm going to be pretty messed up for the day - telling me that I need someone to sit with me for 24 hours after the procedure and not to let me go near the computer in case I buy stuff I won't remember buying - I thought they were joking but he said he was serious.

So any thoughts? I'm using around 600mg Codeine per day but I can cut it down for that day if it's a dangerous combo.

It's good you told your dentist that you're taking codeine. After dental procedures, many times patients are prescribed pain medication. That's where you would need to be careful not to overdo it since the midazolam might have you stoned for a while.

So these are safe to take together? I'm worried about a dangerous interaction. I put them in the online interaction checker and it says "moderate" so I don't know if this is dangerous or not. It's kind of got me anxious.

Midazolam is a moderately powerful CNS depressant with a moderate duration, incidentally used in lethal injection, though I've been meaning to try it on a recommendation. CNS combos aren't traditionally safe but if you're around a doctor there's very minimal danger. I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I read that about lethal injections, it didn't really help much with the anxiety. It's just that all I hear on here is that you should never combine 2 CNS depressants as it's stupidly dangerous. So has anyone ever taken this before? What can I expect? I've been told that I need to have someone escort me there and back plus have someone to sit with me for 24 hours afterwards!

It makes me think I'm not going to be able to function properly for the rest of the day. How severe will this sedation be? Will I be able to stay awake afterwards? Or walk properly on my own? The only person I can get to escort me is really old so won't be able to help at all really if I have trouble getting up stairs and that kind of thing.

Just don't go nuts taking codeine and you will be alright. I've had several procedures done where they gave me twilight anesthesia. You may feel groggy for hours afterwards, that's why it's not safe to drive. It affects people differently, my dad slept for the rest of the day when he had his cataract surgery.

Oh okay, that clears things up a bit. I'll probably take a small dose to keep the WDs away but as you said keep it low. The way the doctor, well, dentist, explained it was very, very vague and ominous sounding "you'll need someone to be with you for 24 hours after the procedure and someone to escort you home" makes me wonder just what this stuff is going to do.

By the way does anyone know whether they bring you out of the sedation by giving you something else or let it wear off naturally?

It wears off naturally. IIRC, midazolam is often jointly administered with fentanyl for anesthesia during oral surgery. Last time I had this done I was habituated to daily hydrocodone, and was prescribed additional oxycodone by the surgeon, none of which raised any hackles with myself or the surgeon. Of course respiratory depression can and will occur, but I think you are doing well by being forthright with the doctor, and your awareness of the potential harm will go a long way towards safety. Just be careful.

Okay, so today I had my appointment I took maybe 60mg of Codeine hoping to keep WDs away (don't wanna start sweating and crapping all over the hospital, *ahem*). I started to get a little feeling of WDs when I arrived at the hospital since I'm usually used to 600-1000mg per day. Once they injected that Midazolam though they completely vanished and I stopped caring. The codeine didn't affect the effects of the sedative at all. So basically I was an idiot for worrying, I just got in now and feel completely normal as if it's completely worn off. There I was thinking I'd go into a coma from an OD CNS depressants. I was incredibly anxious and worried and I know this sounds stupid but when I looked up there was a number 13 on the ceiling! Even though I'm not superstitious and, can't stand those that are, the blipping from my heart monitor increased due to anxiety. Stupid brain.

I actually want to get hold of some Midazolam now, it was pretty good stuff. The feeling of relaxation was so gentle and mild, not what I was expecting at all, although I did feel very dizzy when I first stood up. I cared about absolutely nothing while laying there. I'd love to try a drug in the same family (benzos?) recreationally as that was my first time. Anyway thanks for your replies, you helped me keep my anxiety at bay in the days leading up to this.

I've only heard of this being used in surgical settings in here the U.S. but it is a benzo. Glad your procedure went well!

Thanks. I think this was classed as dental surgery. It only took around 20 minutes though (felt like 5 thanks to "the good stuff" as they called it) so it wasn't anything major. I think they gave it due to my anxiety.

I've been hooked on Dormicum I.M. , after i searched the pharmecopae for a non-addictive I.M. sedative...back in the days.
Nowadays the book says different, for getting hooked is a big possibility.
Esp. in combination with H and if you want to forget that you live.
The amnesia from this substance works for 20 minutes BEFORE you take it.
So you will have forgotten what happened the 20 minutes before ingesting or getting shot up.
This is a major reason for that is to make the road into surgery a very smooth one.

So for recreational value, it means waking up, not knowing what you did...and having forgotten where you hid your stash.

I went back into the hospital on Dormi, stole anything that seemed nice, got invited to the police station, and they told me what i had done.
I told them, it could be, but i can't remember, due to the antegrade amnesia.
That pissed the cops off but after speaking to an Anaesthesiologist, cops came back and told me it was true.
I could go home, for i could not admit to any acquisation...

btw it's the only benzo solubale completely in water, but snorting the solution will result in major nosebleeds.
IV will wipe you out instantly, no fun either.
If you take the pills, take them in bed, or you'll be surprised what you did the next day.
