Or haven't you found that the systems for planning always fail?

Can you avoid what gave daddy his heart attack?

Have you tried everything, anything all to no avail?

Hello! I have studied astrology and its history as well as different perspectives on it for some years, and what I have found is that my understanding and perception of how the heavenly bodies affect us changes as I evolve. Understanding and acknowledging a fact or something works is a process that goes on for an indeterminate amount of time, I think. I could not have understood or perceived what I do now five years ago. Not by a long shot. My study of astrology, (as well as Tarot, shamanism, and energy work), has at different times delighted, frustrated, confused, and enlightened me. My answer to you I guess is, sometimes it just feels like you have tried everything, to no avail. This is unavoidable if you are a true seeker. This is where the struggle with having an investigative and scientific mind and a spiritual perception and open heart lie. Faith is not blind or idiotic, in my case - it's very difficult and inherent within me. I don't have a choice, it seems.... Hope that helped - I am new so sorry if that is of no help:)

Do I believe that the signs of the Zodiac exist? Of course; I've seen them. Do I believe that the claims of astrologers are true, or that astrology is useful? Of course not; that would be a silly thing to believe.

I dismiss it all as complete rubbish. I don't however find it hard to believe that the time of year (and thus moons gravitational pull & length of day) that you were born may affect your development, either mental or physical, in a subtle but distinct way that we haven't figured out yet. Thus causing people born at certain times to share similar traits.

The signs are a rich system of symbology. Apart from the question of weather astrology works there is a matter of the system as a thought construct. Astrology has as many interpretations as there are people into astrology. Yet most astrologians have interpretations that are individual but akin.

One can find the fact that someone else identifies or doesn't identify with a sign as some info about how they perceive themselves. Their interpretations of other signs is a some revelation also.

The question of true isn't the same as the question could this be useful. Believing in untrue things can be useful, disbelieving true things can also be useful. I know someone might think that saying belief doesn't have to be about truth could lead to solipsism.Beliefs soften the world and harden it. They enable us to stand one another sometimes. They sustain us on quests and missions.

Nonfactual or mistaken beliefs happen all the time. The descent into solipsism can happen more easily when one takes believing as a tool involved reality testing. Belief is more about harmonizing with reality or having a mental/emotional platform to motivate and sustain one towards building a better reality.

Aestheticly I like astrology. I have fun with it. Sometimes I feel impressed with the results but personal life results aren't proof. Were astrology concretely of significant influence in a consistent matter it would be provable. Statistics about returned items during Mercury retrograde or some phenomenon like that would build irrefutable proof for a particular part of astrological practice. Astrology has big confounders that haven't been figured out, is of variable influence and not predictable, or is really not any sort of influence.

I love it though. Its a lot of fun. When you analyze things through sign, house, planet, aspects, on and on; you really have put yourself through some mental calisthenics and will invariably have new insights about what you set out to analyze. Some astrologers require it to be true to engage in. I think once you have found it fun its hard to disengage from considering it true because so many people have to think something is true to believe. Except when they are loving a TV show or movie because that is our one allowed reprieve from our beliefs having to be in either the rational or the true.

I do think the time of year that someone is born, and the resultant times of the year they pass through key early milestones, can have a lasting and slightly predictable effect on their personality lifelong. I'm a very typical Capricorn by most accounts, and I know that the fact that I've always celebrated and looked forward to my birthday in the coldest, darkest time of year has had a profound effect on how I see my place in the world.

The Zodiac is simply a proto-calendar: a loop of star patterns in the sky that changes predictably depending on the time of year. It's like saying the position of the hands on a clock have a connection to my state of alertness. It's not the hands themselves that directly tweak my mood, it's what they stand for (the time of day).

I do think there is something to be said, also, for the symbolism of astrology being a helpful tool for self reflection. Would I base key life decisions on what my horoscope said? Probably not. But can it be interesting food for thought, and a good excuse for a bit of self-reflection as I thumb through the morning paper? Sure.

The way the question is worded is rather misleading, however admittedly it is the way most people approach you on the subject.

Do I believe that being born in the month of a given sign tells you anything about yourself? Not as-is. The sign you are born "in" only tells you about where the sun was when you were born. There are all other celestial bodies there that change the interpretation, and if you put them all together, I have to admit they seem to bear many details that are simply hard to ignore. For more info on this, I refer you to the Astrology Club thread in this forum.

Do I believe in the zodiac wheel as an archetypal symbol? Most definitely! The idea of the zodiac is implied in literary, mythological, and historical literature from all over the world. It is definitely a very useful tool to discern an archetype from.

Your other questions in the OP...? Well admittedly I have no idea what those have to be with your first question :/

This i believe is the cause of much confusion over Astrology to the majority of people, there is a world of difference between the horoscopes in magazines and newspapers, and actual natal charts.. which map out each planet with its specific degree to the house it's located in, aspects between planets, transits, retrogrades and much more. It's an incredibly detailed mathematical system, which as Jamshyd said.. when put all together.. depending on your awareness and acceptance of yourself, it can be hard to ignore the details.

I think there was a study that showed children born in Winter have a tendency to have higher IQs but fewer physical achievements.

Someone can find it maybe?

This about covers it. I am not much for predictive work, but a chart is a hell of a road map. How you choose your own adventure is a matter of free will...

and this is better covered in the astrology thread, though the astrology thread is not for haters.

I don't take any of it for absolute truth but I find numerology and astrology interesting all the same. I find numerology especially fascinating because it's almost eerie how dead-on it can be, however, I'm not one to buy into these kinds of things and I simply chalk it up to coincidence more than anything. It's still fun to think about though.

There are 13 astronomical constellations of the ecliptic. How do we reconcile this with modern Western views of astrology?
With Opheicus, the (accurate) zodiac becomes:

# aries = april 19 - may 13
# taurus = may 14 - june 19
# gemini = june 20 - july 20
# cancer = july 21 - aug 9
# leo = august 10 - september 15
# virgo = september 16 - october 30
# libra = october 31 - november 22
# scorpio = november 23 - november 29
# ophiuchus = november 30 - december 17
# sagittarius = december 18 - january 18
# capricorn = january 19 - february 15
# aquarius = february 16 - march 11
# pisces = march 12 - april 18

^^ The zodiac I posted should pretty much destroy 95% of adherents to the system. There is further evidence of its bullshit, but I'll take the easy win for now.
