Do all people take drugs to fit in?

I had an interesting question that I've been thinking about for a long time now. It seems that all propaganda, teachers, parents, etc all say the same thing. That people take drugs to fit in, or to be popular. The problem I have with this, is from the first bowl I smoked I never did it to fit in. I do drugs because I enjoy them, I like altering my mind, visual field, audio, and physical sensations. I've never once thought, geez, if I don't take this ecstasy my friends will think that I am uncool and I'll be a loser amongst the "in" crowd. I'm curious to see feedback on this, is it just me who has a mentality like this or is this "fitting in" shit really why the majority of people start taking drugs.
 
People indulge in substances for lots of reasons. Fitting in or to be cool is one of them, espcially for younger people(under 18), but not the only one. Humans are known to conform to group and societial values, goals, norms..etc. It goes past drugs look at politics(Nazi Germany),religion, stupid games (POGs),dress, music, blah, blah and blah. Try and keep in mind while popular people at your school, I am assuming, do drugs plenty of unpopular people do them too. Also certain drugs are usually considered trendy: Alcohol, weed, E; and not trendy smack, crack, sherm. I don't think its possible to know why must people decide to partake.
 
for the most part, i do 'em cuz i want to, but often i find myself taking stuff so i can actually talk and interact with people instead of being a slave to my weird social anxiety, which could be another way of saying that i take them to 'fit in'

i'm sure a lot of people take them to "rebel" or to make friends or whatnot, but i'm not any of those people, so i cant say for sure.
 
^ I also notice I sometimes take them to talk to people, but about the question the first time I started smoking I got very unpopular. None of my friends had ever even seen weed when I started and had no intention of starting. I think it is just another stupid thing that "everyone" tells you.
 
I started drugs by curiosity...continued for fun...and ended doing psychedelics only for adventure/self exploration/shamanic practices....nothing to do with "fit in". Depends on people I guess: there are many reasons for taking drugs, and you always use drugs for more than one reason.
 
I started outta curiosity, but since everyone was doing it, i thought it was ok/normal.

But drugs do bring people together.
 
Looking back on it, I actually wonder where it was they got that crazy idean from in the first place, I've never thought taking drugs was cool, I've always thought taking drugs is fun. Couldn't really care less about the cool bit, but then I've finished school now, so there's not really any such thing as being "cool".
 
this "taking drugs to be cool" is largely only relative to like young school kids. past those years I think it's very uncommon for someone to be interested in ingesting a drug to fit in socially.
 
Doing drugs to fit in is stupid. Personally I think drug users face the oppisite problem especially when they get into other substances besides weed.
 
i did drugs so i could be cool and that hot girl in algebra class would notice me.

i kept smoking up before class and then breathing my stinky potsmoke breath in her face to get her to notice that i was cool because i had smoked marijuana, but all to no avail. i don't know what her problem was? maybe she didn't notice or maybe she just didn't like me? :(

i brought in some pot one day and showed her and she just kinda gave me this funny look and i was like "wanna smoke this and then have sex after class?" but that didn't work out and i just ended up getting sent to the principal's office 8( what a mess!!!

he said that drugs are not a good way to be cool but i haven't been able to figure out any other way and i am still a virgin to this day.

i did get my revenge on that girl though, i killed her and stuffed all of her body parts into a space rocket and then i peed all over it. =D
 
I think a ton of people do it for the coolness factor. I personally never gave a shit about that, which is probably why I am still partying while they are done with it. I just love the weed...
 
Doing psychedelics to fit in and be cool turns into a very interesting experiment to see how much the person changes. The results are remarkable., It really breaks the persons ego and shows them how really small they are.
 
i think the whole doing drugs to fit in thing is BS myth created by groups like DARE that are out of touch with realty. when i was in highschool, there were 'cool' kids that did drugs as well as unpopular kids. there were also 'cool' kids who werent into drugs either.

poeple use drugs because theyre fun, enlightening or simply an escape form reality...basically all the reasons people on this board use them.
 
fuck that. i do drugs because i want to do drugs. i couldn't care less what people think of me. i dont need to "fit in" with people who judge others and lable people.
 
Never once in my life have I seen someone pressured to do drugs. I've never witnessed anything like those 'come on man, everyone is doing it, be cool' scenes in DARE videos. I've seen people jokingly reference that vocabulary when offering drugs, but I've never seen anyone honestly pressured. Nor have I ever heard drug users suggest that someone wasn't cool just because s/he didn't use.

I mean fuck, drugs are expensive, at least in America. The attitude among users seems to be, 'if you don't use, that's great - there's more for me.' Not 'you will take my expensive, difficult-to-acquire substances and have them for yourself or you are not cool.'
