dissociatives- a class of hallucinogens that makes the user feel disconnected or "dissociated" from his/her surroundings. these psychedelics have much different effects than "traditional" serotonergic psychedelics like LSD or mescaline, but can be just as mind expanding. the dissociatives cause the user to feel like they are in a lucid dream, and that their mind is disconnected from their body and even reality. effects are often compared to an "out of body experience".

now there are what i call "the big three" dissociatives. they are PCP, dextromethorphan(DXM), and ketamine. these drugs generally produce similar major effects, but each can have different subjective or minor effects. these three all act as NMDA receptor antagonists, dopamine reuptake inhibitors, and act on sigma receptors. unlike LSD and similar psychedelics, dissociative psychedelics can cause harm to health, nerotoxicity, and have the potential for psychological dependence. here's info on each of the "big three dissociatives":

-PCP: angel dust, sherms, illy, rocket fuel. likely the most famous dissociative psychedelic. was developed as an anesthetic, but discontinued due to side effects. despite it not being used for medical purposes, it is actually a schedule 2 controlled substance. PCP is the "strongest" of the three, and is famous for the horror stories of people under it's influence. most was just media scare tactics, but some cases of people on PCP acting violent and erratic are true. effects include dissociation, euphoria, hallucinations, intoxication, shifts in perception, anethesia, time distortion, and sometimes unpredictable, bizarre, and violent behavior. PCP is both a strong NMDA antagonist(producing dissociatve effects) and dopamine reuptake inhibitor(producing stimulation). the DRI action allows the user to wander about with energy in the dissociated state. anyway, PCP is like the "king" of dissociatives and requires full respect in terms of strength.

-DXM: robo, triple C's, dex. dextromethorphan, or DXM, is found in many OTC cough suppressants. DXM is known to be a "cheap high" by teens, although it deserves more than that. yes, high school kids raid their medicine cabinets for it, but it is a strong dissociative psychedelic and even i use it(i can get pretty much any drug i want, and i have the money). DXM produces dissociation, euphoria, and other PCP-like effects. however, DXM is also a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and users often report empathogen qualites. in my experience, DXM is the most "psychedelic" or "spritual". DXM can have profound effects so don't take it lightly just because its OTC.

-Ketamine: special k, k, vitamin k. ketamine, known as "special k" by drug users, is another common dissociative. it is popular as a club drug or rave drug, along with MDMA and GHB. it is a schedule 3 controlled substance. it is used as an anesthetic for both animals and humans. it's effects are similar to PCP and DXM, but last for only an hour when snorted(the most common ROA). like MDMA, ketamine is widely used as a club drug. street ketamine usually comes from diverted medical supplies of the drug.

the three drugs listed above have similar major effects, but each is unique in it's own way and has a little something different to bring to the table. other drugs that are listed as dissociatives include:

-nitrous oxide(laughing gas)
-tiletamine
-ibogaine
-PCP analogs like 3-meo-PCP and others
-salvia d.
-a. muscaria

dissociatives can be used for spiritual exploration. the out of body experience is often considered significant in a spritual manner, and the way you see the world and yourself on dissociatives can lead to spritual experiences. some say they can bring on feelings of rebirth, and many individuals have used them for "mind expanding" (ex. John C. Lilly).

so if anybody has anything to add on effects, info, and spiritual use of dissociatives, post here.

I wish we had more dissociatives, more forms, more different durations and intensities. I truly love the experience, but I just don't like the limited choices. They give you so many artistic ideas, I find them invaluable.

Dissociative lovers seem to be in the minority everywhere, we need to stick together.

Dissociatives are a fascinating class of psychoactive drugs, but the mention of John Lilly reminds me that these chemicals are thought to display varying degrees of neurotoxicity and can lead to lasting neurocognitive deficits if taken in high doses over long periods of time.

John Lilly destroyed his mind with ketamine. See here.

^Moderation is key.

My understanding is that Dr. Lilly self-administered high-dose ketamine on an hourly schedule, and continued this regimen for months with breaks only to take care of basic needs.

It's too bad that his brain wasn't used to settle the Olney's lesions debate. Was it organic brain damage or simply reinforced delusional thought patterns in a susceptible individual?

not sure how talking about dolphins is evidence for a 'destroyed mind'

But I remember listening to a Terence Mckenna interview and he described him as 'such a trip' and that he'd show up out of the fog in an 'obi-wan kenobi robe'

i've talked about having thinking disorders, not as fearful as i once was.. and like to do strange things to people "fuck with them"

but i've never had an 'imaginative' experience at high doses. describing it as 'cosmic' and using the word 'quantum' etc

what is a 'young mind'

considering he was rather old when he started taking these drugs

Out of all of the chemicals I have tried DXM has led to the most deeply spiritual experiences for me of any substance, one of which I actually had the experience of speaking with "god"...it was an experience that literally changed the bedrock upon which my personality stands today. I've also recently had a rather profound, spiritually edged experience on 4-MeO-PCP where I was shown this sort of branching structure that looked sort of like a root network of a plant where I was shown every significant person I've met in my life and the way each one opened doors and closed doors on my personal path. It was both humbling and awe inspiring to have it literally laid before me as an almost map. It definitely has helped me in how I regard certain past events that went very poorly for me, and has let me sort of reframe how I understand the events in my life. On paper it might not sound like that big of a deal, but when you are able to recast the way in which your emotions and thoughts align with your memory, that's a pretty powerful experience to wake up the next day feeling fundamentally changed about how you view the world through the lens of your personal history.

Recently also I've finally had the opportunity to sample a small amount a ketamine, after years and years since my first experiences with it...it's amazed me this time around, even in small doses of 50-100 mg, I have found it a wonderful tool for re-examining emotional sore spots in my emotions. It's really allowed me to sort of view certain things without my habitual (and in some cases extremely negative) emotional responses triggering. My guess is that with the body being sort of numbed by the ketamine, the emotional response circuits are less held in place because the body half of the equation, the somatic half, isn't reinforcing the negative loop. It's almost like I have been able to release some of the old poison and feel somewhat lighter, and less prone to revisiting the old wounds.

This thread needs some serious BUMPAGE...I mean let's be honest, dissociatives are far more interesting than traditional psychedelics. They have effects that border on the downright supernatural, and leave me in a state of mind that knocks the purest LSD afterglow for six...

So why so little discussion?

Here's a repost from the 4-meo-pcp thread detailing my most powerful experience:

I plugged 200mg; minutes later I lost contact with my physical body and entered a plane that felt neither here nor there, kind of like limbo. All around I perceived shimmering ethereal lights; these were the disembodied souls of everyone I'd ever known and loved. What's more, all their pain was gone. They reached out and touched me, and I became one of them.

A lot of my experiences mirror CatfishRivers' description above - perception of how prior experiences and people have influenced how I am today. I like his phrase 'branching structures' - I thought of it as 'making connections'. I've been able to place and orient myself in my head around nostalgic locations, and on one occasion I was briefly able to visualise how every single one of my thoughts and emotions was tied up with every other in a tight bundle, kind of like a neural motherboard.

I K-holed for the first time recently and that was possibly even more glorious. I'm a strict rationalist but I'm beginnning to grudgingly accept the notion of an afterlife, or the continued existence of the soul, after some of these trips.

Damn, I can so easily see myself pulling a John C. Lilly :|

Share your experiences people!

And in the meantime, let us rejoice in the current abundance of arylcyclohexylamines!

I've taken a decent amount of all 3, but the only one I'd really be interested in doing again would be K, maybe a k-hole when coming down from MDMA.

I used to love DXM, I found it to be very euphoric, but the last time I did it I was knocked on my ass and felt nauseous the whole time. It wasn't particularly enjoyable or insightful. In general dissociatives make me nauseous and I don't like the physical effects of feeling heavy and numb.

I've never really understood the hype of PCP. I've seen people get pretty fucked from it and have a psychotic break, but personally I found it pretty boring most of the time. It did go really well with mushrooms though :) Maybe because people around here eat/snort it there are less problems with it, I'm not sure.

Anyways, overall I'm not really impressed with the dissociatives. I think I would have to combine them with something a bit more stimulating to get a decent trip I've had some pretty weird experiences but I don't really like the body load and nausea.

I find K-holes to be hands down one of the most spiritual experiences obtainable. When the senses are shut down, I feel closer to my soul then ever otherwise possible. I feel it is the only experience that has PROVEN to me that I am real, that the universe exists, that everything is pure and perfect, and that we are all one. Transcendence.

Of course attempting to put these experiences into words simply makes me look psychotic. See above statements ^ =D
