Disaster looms as oil slick reaches US coast

I can't even remember the last president who spoke from his own voluntary script

Probably for good reason.

Maybe this is starting to eclipse the dust bowl period in America, like Mehm said. Sooo many more things could go wrong and unfortunately probably will. When people start to get disheartened the negative energy becomes contagious and more negativity occurs. You think America has the strength and knowledge to pull out of this nosedive? I think so and the main thing left to do at this point is the power of prayer and suggestion/visualization. Than again mother nature has been ravaged and raped for to long and consequences are only natural. Hope for change, imagine white/golden/purple light rebuilding the cells of the ocean floor.

Wouldn't it be nice if the govt./media would announce that we are going to conduct experiments where there is a 15min slot during a given day where everybody concentrates their thoughts/prayers/images to try to repair the destruction. That would be a HUGE step in the right direction. I believe other countries have done similar things in the past China/Japan maybe I forget. Its sad how set America is in its ways, ways that are obviously pounding us into the ground.

peace.

Some bad news for our Tampa Bay/Mons Venus-based (yes, they do have WiFi) readers: globalresearch.ca notes that Florida "faces severe fresh water shortages and power blackouts if the thick crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster clogs sea water intakes at the largest seawater desalinisation plant in the United States -- the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalinisation Plant at Apollo Beach in Tampa, Florida." And some even worse news for America's purported democratic/free speech regime: "The Obama administration has taken a page from the government of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Chernobyl in censoring the bad news from the Gulf oil mega-disaster. The Chernobyl cover-up largely resulted in the hastening of glasnost and the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union."

From Globalresearch.ca

"Informed emergency planning sources in Florida have informed WMR that the state faces severe fresh water shortages and power blackouts if the thick crude oil from the Deepwater Horizon disaster clogs sea water intakes at the largest seawater desalinisation plant in the United States -- the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalinisation Plant at Apollo Beach in Tampa, Florida.

The plant, which uses seawater reverse osmosis to turn seawater into 16 to 19 million gallons of drinking water daily for residents of the Tampa Bay area, faces the threat of filtration membranes becoming clogged if oil from the Gulf of Mexico enters its intake pipes. Such an event would render the plant unable to process seawater, resulting in a major fresh water shortage for the Tampa Bay.

Similarly, oil clogging the water cooling intakes at the Crystal River Nuclear Power Plant on the Gulf of Mexico coast, some 80 miles north of Tampa, could force the shutdown of the Unit 3 pressurized water nuclear reactor. Such an event would result in power shutdowns in the Florida areas served by the power plant.

The Obama administration has taken a page from the government of Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Chernobyl in censoring the bad news from the Gulf oil mega-disaster. The Chernobyl cover-up largely resulted in the hastening of glasnost and the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union. "

BP ship on fire

NEW ORLEANS—A bolt of lightning struck the ship capturing oil from a blown-out BP well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, igniting a fire that halted containment efforts in another setback for the embattled company in its nearly two-month struggle to stop the spill, the company said.

BP America President and Chairman Lamar McKay: “BP supports an economy-wide price for carbon based on fair and equitable application across all sectors and believes that market based solutions, like a cap and trade or linked-fee, are the best solutions to manage GHG emissions.” (Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, U.S. House Of Representatives, Hearing, 6/15/10)

Shell President Marvin E. Odum: “That is why Shell supports legislating a solution to energy and climate issues as a means to create a secure U.S. energy future, reduce dependence on foreign oil and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. This requires setting a price for carbon, and we recommend cap and trade.” (Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, U.S. House Of Representatives, Hearing, 6/15/10)

ConocoPhillips CEO James J. Mulva: “Another key element of a comprehensive energy policy should be federal action to address global climate change. As you are aware, ConocoPhillips supports passage of a comprehensive federal law establishing a clear and transparent price for carbon.” (Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, U.S. House Of Representatives, Hearing, 6/15/10)

Obama use's Tonight’s Speech To Push Carbon Tax.....Like i totally didn't see this asshole trying to do so.... they are so predictable

Political capital spending at its finest! Let the spill become far-reaching in its impact in order to impose another key part of his agenda: bankrupting main street while bankrolling Algore and the greenies through cap and tax legislation.

Rush Limbaugh said it years ago that, with the fall of Communism, the new Communism would be Environ’mental’ism. Once again, Rush was right!

They closed public water in some places.. HIGH Bacteria , such as the kind found in human fecal matter...

Weekly water samples are being analyzed for enteric bacteria that normally inhabit the intestinal tracts of humans and animals, and may cause human disease, infections or rashes.

The presence of enteric bacteria is an indication of fecal pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife and human sewage. Poor results are posted as an “advisory” at the affected beaches.

A day after telling the nation he would make BP "pay for the damage their company has caused," President Barack Obama met with the company's top executives at the White House -- and news of the agreement emerged shortly afterwards.

BP executives, including Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, CEO Tony Hayward and BP U.S. boss Lamar McKay, attended the meeting with Obama and other top administration officials that was scheduled to last for 20 minutes.

The independent fund will be led by lawyer Kenneth Feinberg, who oversaw payments to families of victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

OKALOOSA ISLAND.Fl — Lifeguards have cordoned off a 100-yard stretch of Okaloosa Island so teams can assess and clean up a concentration of tar balls that have washed up there.

"We've got some product the size of golf balls, half dollars, very weathered oil," said Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Dino Villani, who was called to the beach early Wednesday morning.

"This is the most we've had," he said. "We've got hundreds. We don't have huge piles of oil, but we do have quite a bit."

Villani said the water was clear and beautiful, but that the health department had been called in to check it out.

He added that tar balls generally float in and are deposited on the beach. The Department of Environmental Protection was already on scene to clean up the area.

Emergency officials received calls of product washing up there late Tuesday night, but responders couldn't find anything of significance....

I don't really get Obama's game, trying to shift the blame onto Britain?

BP is a multi-national company that no longer stands for British Petroleum...40% of its shareholders may be British but 39% are American. BP also employs more Americans than it does Britons. The rig was owned by an American Company, it was American safety equipment that failed. Amazing how quiet Anadarko Petroleum Corp. are being about this?

It is also fucking rich that he wants BP to pay £20 billion when Union Carbide Limited an American company did absolutely fuck all after the Bhopal Gas Disaster, an American company thats faults led to the deaths of 15k people, but oh Indians aren't anywhere near as important as Americans are they?

Oh and what about the Piper Alpha? An American owned (Occidental Petroleum) Oil Platform in the North Sea that caught fire and sunk killing 187 people, did you hear the Queen or Prime Minister demanding money or blaming America? No. It's pathetic.

Obama has stepped way out of line here, what gives him the right to bully international companies into doing things that in the past American companies have always shied out of doing.

hey i read an interview with Kenneth Feinberg, he seems like a decent dude with a terrible fucking job.

little sister sent me this picture today when she took her charge to The Lake:

f that.

hold companies responsible from now on. fuck whatever happened in the past. we need to keep our politicians balls locked up tight so they keep the executives of these companies' balls even tighter.

i don't care what happened in the past. make bp pay out the fucking ass.

I know this is older news but this just shows how gangsta NJ is....a little birdy must have said something... lol

"New Jersey's pension system has been spared a big hit from the British Petroleum stock price drop following the Gulf oil spill.

That's because state portfolio managers made a fortuitous decision to sell off most of the state's $465 million position in BP shares before the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. "

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Dolphins and sharks are showing up in surprisingly shallow water just off the Florida coast. Mullets, crabs, rays and small fish congregate by the thousands off an Alabama pier. Birds covered in oil are crawling deep into marshes, never to be seen again.

Marine scientists studying the effects of the BP disaster are seeing some strange — and troubling — phenomena.

Fish and other wildlife are fleeing the oil out in the Gulf and clustering in cleaner waters along the coast. But that is not the hopeful sign it might appear to be, researchers say.

The animals' presence close to shore means their usual habitat is badly polluted, and the crowding could result in mass die-offs as fish run out of oxygen. Also, the animals could easily get devoured by predators.
