The Full and Comprehensive History of DMT

What is the Story Behind the Spirit Molecule?

all about DMT

What is DMT? [Define DMT]

DMT (as well as 5-methoxy-DMT) are found naturally occurring in many plants, animals and even people. The largest percentage of the plants which contain DMT are native to South America. It is true that DMT is also regularly manufactured (both in countries where it is legal and illegal), producing a synthetic version. These compounds are typically found for sale on the dark web and black markets. Pure DMT, however, is a more recent trend, as up until 1957, anyone around the world who experienced DMT would have been consuming a more primitive, tribal concoction…rather than a precise, laboratory-grade extraction. This first record would also be a DMT user experience, and one that would be taken very seriously.

The First Recorded DMT Experience

Ironically, the first recorded experience with pure DMT would be Stephen Szara, Chief of the National Institute of Drug Abuse’s Biomedical Research at the time. When Stephen Szara injected himself and some friends with DMT (75 mg intramuscular injection), he recorded the entire experience to the best of his ability. The initial effects began to manifest only a few moments into the trip, producing a nauseous, weak, elevated state. Szara was able to document a dilation of his pupils and his elevated pulse and blood pressure. He also documented a euphoria and amazing visuals, of which he could only describe during his trip as rapid changing, wonderful visions and brilliant colors. He would need to wait until the trip passed, almost an hour later, before he was able to fully record the experience.
Szara also noted that it only required 50 mg of DMT to bring amazing visual hallucinations. He made note that the eyes could be open or closed, not effecting the visuals either way. The peak was recorded to be about 15 minutes into the trip, with a come down period not lasting more than 45 minutes from there. Those participants of his study which received 125 mg doses or larger became catatonic and could not communicate, respond, or move. They would lose consciousness until the trip had passed.
It is also worth noting that Albert Hofmann, a well-known pioneer for his synthesis and work with LSD (most notably LSD-25), had also known of DMT. He synthesized a number of DMT analogs which received much less appreciation than his LSD work. In fact, most people would not care about his DMT analogs at all until about the mid 1960s.

When Did DMT Become Mainstream?

DMT chemical

DMT has been used for (probably) thousands of years for its psychedelic effects, however, it has only recently become mainstream in a pure form. Interestingly enough, the first real “wave” of people wanted to try DMT and explore the possibilities the drug provided themselves after hearing about a rather terrible experience on DMT. A famous author by the name of William Burroughs visited Peru in 1960 trying to find Yage, experimenting with a number of plants and devices that induce hallucinations or are used as hallucinogens. Allen Ginsberg introduced famed psychonaut and psychedelic advocate Timothy Leary (also a famous author) to William Burroughs, and the two began corresponding back and forth about hallucinogens, specifically dimethyltryptamine, or DMT. Burroughs warned Leary about using DMT, explaining he had a horrible reaction, which was widely unpleasant and published in a popular magazine called “Encounter.”
Timothy Leary did take the warning seriously, but decided (as documented in “High Priest”) that his team should wait to judge for themselves until they try DMT in the appropriate settings. Leary, along with fellow researchers Richard Alpert and Ralph Metzner, are often credited with being responsible for DMT’s many years of popular psychedelic use, even to this day. If it weren’t for these three researchers deciding to experiment with DMT despite all of the negative experiences they had come across, there would have been no excitement about the drug.
One of Leary’s experiences was actually recorded and published in the Psychedelic Review. The team even began a prototype for a device that would allow a spiritual explorer on DMT the ability to communicate their state of mind back to the real world while they were tripping. Leary, Alpert and Metzner documented so many of their experiments and observations about how DMT experiences can differ depending upon set and setting that it is more than reasonable to attribute the widespread experiences today to their initial research. Ultimately, their work in the early 1960s pushed DMT into the spotlight and created a world’s worth of experimenters.

What is DPT? [Define DPT, the Drug]

DPT use

N,N-Dipropyltryptamine and Dipropyltryptamine are known more commonly by the name “DPT.” DPT is a synthetic psychedelic that is similar in many ways to DMT. DPT is typically a little less predictable than DMT and the trips can be a little more intense at times, leading many psychonauts to claim it is harder to have a good trip on DPT. One of the reasons DPT is a “harder to handle” drug than DMT is because DPT lasts much longer. DPT has also been described as producing a feeling of intense paranoia, and although nothing is “right.” It can be very hard to stabilize the mind during some of the longer DPT experiences, which make it a drug that most psychonauts suggest only experienced psychedelic users pursue.
Just like DMT, DPT is ingested orally, injected intramuscularly, or even snorted. The most common method of administration, however, is vaporizing the freebase form of DPT. Vaporizing or smoking the freebase is most popular when DPT is used for recreation and also when used for research purposes. It has been used for so many things throughout the years…though it first appeared towards the end of the 1970s. It was first most commonly employed in psychological practices and therapy sessions. Some psychologists and therapists believed it was a wonderful aide for patients on their deathbeds, and it was prescribed as a way to reduce anxieties for these hurting patients.
DPT is a fast-acting, short-lived tryptamine that has a longer side-chain than DMT. Unlike DMT experiences, which typically last about 15-60 minutes, DPT experiences can last up to 4 hours. Many of the patients and recreational users alike have reported experiences of extreme peaks that have far exceeded those of DMT. When comparing DPT to LSD, about half of the people who have tried authentic, pure versions of both believe DPT is stronger of an experience. Almost all of the people who tried DPT explain it as exhausting, no matter how valuable an experience they may have had.

Pathways to Other Dimensions

new dimensions DMT DPT

A lot of records and experiences (from both famous authors and experts on the topic of psychedelics, as well as a plethora of other researchers) exist that detail intricate details of other worlds and realms one may see while under the influence of DMT. One author in particular, Cliff Pickover, has theorized that there are entire other parallel universes which can only be viewed and experienced while on DMT. It has been speculated by many people that DMT could be a way of changing one’s filter so that they can see other dimensions. Some tribes believed DMT was given to them by the Gods to help them access the heavens and other far away places.
DMT has had such a profound effect on the history of mankind, that no one truly knows exactly how far back DMT use may have been employed. Many authors, again Pickover one of them, have suggested that DMT has likely greatly influenced ancient artwork, especially things like cave paintings. A lot of other experts and pioneers on the topic, such as James Kent (a former editor of Entheogen Review), have described a huge array of creatures, beings, aliens and divine creatures which have been presented to those using DMT. Kent specifically notates that there is no limit to the types of creatures and things one can see in DMT visions. Kent has outlined the most prominent creatures experienced through DMT trips are those of aliens and elves delivering messages. The messages are usually deduced to environmental-plant-like messages such as “the plants are all interconnected,” “the plants have consciousness” and “the plants are the soul of the Earth.”

DMT and Anadenanthera

Anadenanthera is found abundantly growing throughout a large percentage of the Amazon and South America. In fact, some explorers have suggested it can be found in about 10% of the continent. It is extremely common near the Orinoco basin (located in both Colombia and Venezuela). It has been found growing in grasslands, wetlands, forests, and even in savanna areas. Anadenanthera was also introduced and cultivated in the West Indies for quite some time, only dying out right before the 1900s.
Anadenanthera tree DMT producing

Anadenanthera is not only one of the most prevalent DMT producing plants available in South America used by the tribes, it is also one of the sources with the highest DMT content. Although many records and publications have indicated that the tribes of South America have turned to a number of plants for their DMT content, almost all of the tribes seem to prefer Anadenanthera when available. Most of the drinks that are made using this plant are described as miraculous.
Almost all natives of South America seem to be familiar with Anadenanthera and its vision inducing properties. Almost all tribes around and within the Amazon have their own special version of the drink. One popular drink is well-known around the world in modern times as “ayahuasca.” In some regions where Anadenanthera is less common, tribes turned to Mimosa hostilis, a DMT analog. One of the most common Mimosa drinks is known as the “wine of Jurema.”

DMT and the Virola Species

The Virola genre has many species, more than 60 in fact. These plants are a part of the nutmeg family, also known as the Myristiceae family. They are present throughout much of South America, as well as Central America. Because the more preferred plant for making ayahuasca and many DMT containing beverages is Anadenanthera, a plant which is only native to South America, plants from the more widely growing Virola genre have been found in many ayahuasca analogues. This is especially true in Central America and even in some parts of southern Mexico. Virola DMT preparations are sometimes more frequently in snuff form.
Ironically the Virola hallucinogenic snuffs seem to be most commonly employed in tribes around the Orinoco basin, the same region known as one the most frequent users of Anadenanthera DMT preparations. There are some instances recorded throughout Columbia and Venezuela where some tribes prefer to smoke Virola to induce trances and visions. Typically, better trips are obtained from more involved preparations involving the inner bark of the plant.
Many medicine men and shaman of tribes that regularly employed Virola for their hallucinogenic properties, have amazing botanist skills. Despite the fact that there are over 60 species in the Virola genre, many of them looking extremely similar but still having profoundly different effects, these tribal “psychedelic specialists” are able to predict a lot about the concoctions far before the preparation is complete. For example, they can describe exactly how long preparations take and certain parts of the plant take to change colors during preparation, even though each species is different, simply from examining the plant or its inner bark. They can also predict which plants will provide longer, or more hallucinogenic experiences. This skill is likely a byproduct of living in the area with these native plants, and regularly working with them to produce hallucinogenic snuffs and drinks.

Known Sources of DMT for South American Tribes

Canary Grass DMT

Although many DMT containing concoctions throughout South American tribes tend to possess one of the above-mentioned plants (Anadenanthera, Mimosa hostilis, or a species of Virola), there are still many other DMT sources throughout the continent. Many of these sources have been used as a substitute when one of the primary DMT ingredients are not available. Sometimes these other sources are used in combination with one of the primary DMT ingredients. Some of these sources have been transplanted and cultivated in South America, while others are native to the continent.
There are likely many sources of DMT in South America which have yet to be discovered, however, there are also many sources which have been identified. Many species of Acacia contain high quantities of DMT. Although this plant is a little more prevalent on other continents, it can still be found in South America. The Waika indians (of the Orinoco basin region in Venezuela) use the Acanthaceae justicia shrub’s leaves to create a powerful DMT extraction. Acanthaceae is also very common throughout Mexico. Canary Grass and Common Reed are available throughout South America. Tribes and DMT enthusiasts commonly seek out P. aruninacea for its extremely high DMT content and versatility in growth. Desmanthus illinoensis is hunted for its root bark which contains a lot of DMT that can be easily extracted. It is sometimes called “Prairie Mimosa.” Although Desmanthus is more commonly found in North America, it has been grown and used in South America by tribes for its DMT.

How is DMT Used Today?

Today, DMT is used fairly similarly to how it has been used throughout history. There may be a few set and setting differences between traditional and modern rituals (and users), however, the plants have remained the same, a lot of the preparations have remained the same, and as far as recent history goes for Western culture recreational use (within the last 50 years or so), freebase has remained the same. DMT seems to have barely made the cut as a modern, mainstream drug and had a really rocky start. Against all odds, DMT and its close relative DPT managed to achieve enough positive traction in the 60s and 70s to still be around today. In fact, research on the spirit molecule has become so plentiful that the drug often is known by all psychonauts.

How Is DMT Safely Used?

DMT information

DMT Use Guide and Information

DMT, also known as the “Spirit molecule” and Dimethyltryptamine has been under the spotlight for many decades now. It is a very powerful vision-inducing hallucinogen. This psychedelic is known around the world and has been a part of a number of cultures, traditions, medicines and tonics, life-changing epiphanies, mysteries, folklore, histories and more! But the extremely psychoactive drug is not to be taken lightly. In fact, it is a very dangerous drug and can lead to very serious complications and consequences upon overdose. Extreme research and safety measures are typically performed by psychonauts even considering the drug. DMT can be injected, smoked, vaporized, orally ingested or even snorted.
So how does one use DMT safely? What are the safety precautions for dosing? How should one safely prepare for a DMT trip? All of these and more are valid, concerning questions and depending upon the administration method (how DMT is consumed), the answer may differ. Fortunately, the ways DMT has been administered is an already deeply researched topic, and understanding a little about each can go a long way.

Injecting DMT

In the early days of DMT in Western culture, the drug was typically intramuscularly injected. The effects are often felt rather quickly, with an onset of under five minutes. This makes sense, as it takes less than five minutes for tryptamine to get to the brain when injected this way. The next 10 to 20 minutes can usually be described as euphoric, excited and energetic. Timothy Leary and many of his associate researchers and friends have been well-known for their experiments throughout the 1960s which involved intramuscularly injecting DMT. In fact, if their experiments had been erased from time, DMT would have likely never become mainstream.

Smoking Synthetic DMT

DMT chemical

DMT is often obtained from the dark web and other black markets, or synthesized by a psychonaut themselves. There are many recipes and procedures for preparing synthetic DMT for smoking, and it can be a little difficult for an amateur. The DMT itself will be in a crystalline form and is usually a white, off-white, brownish, yellow, or orange-like color. DMT is typically smoked using a glass pipe, albeit they can be hard to find because they are hard to sell (normal use is for crack cocaine and meth, thus placing extra heat on the paraphernalia).
The reason glasses preferred is because the actual DMT can be observed and monitored so the appropriate vaporization point is obtained without wasting any of the substance. Glass also allows the user to see if there are any leaks or problems with the screen and other parts of the pipe. The screen is normally stainless steel. The flame should never make direct contact with the substance, but instead be held about half an inch away. It is important to melt the DMT enough for vaporization and also prevent it from running down the pipe, all while keeping the flame at the perfect distance from the substance and inhaling the resulting vapor as it is formed. Some pipes are less desirable as they will be harsher to smoke from, harder to load or light, or less visible.

Smoking DMT on a Carrier

A lot of curious DMT enthusiasts have tried many things, but one very common question psychonauts have relates to carriers. A carrier is a mostly harmful herbal substance which can act as a host for the DMT to provide an easier-to-smoke concoction. Basically the DMT tryptamines are mixed with the carrier leaves or herbage and then smoked much like hash or marijuana. In fact, marijuana is often selected as a carrier for smoking DMT. Other common carriers for smoking DMT include but are not limited to: oregano, parsley, passion flower, and lavender. There are a lot of people who have argued against using marijuana due to the fact that it provides a number of psychoactive effects itself and can potentially alter the experience to greatly, though there are plenty of people who still enjoy using cannabis as a carrier.
A lot of experienced psychonauts suggest soaking the carrier and water for a few moments and then re-drying the herb. This practice is done before applying the DMT to the carrier. It is thought to be a way of reducing the aroma and flavor from the carrier, allowing for a more neutral DMT experience. Another tip for smoking DMT on a carrier is to have a bottle of water handy afterwards to help with any harsh effects felt in the throat. This is also partly due to the fact that each lungful of smoke is often suggested to be held in for as long as possible.
DMT pipes are typically not passed a round in ceremonial fashion such as cannabis or tobacco. This is mostly because each individual’s pipe should be loaded with predetermined amounts of DMT. It would not make sense to share pipes, as each person’s dose can be different, and each person inhales differently each time. Not sharing pipes helps each DMT user better monitor their own dosage and clearly see when the full dose has been administered. It should also be noted that using a carrier to smoke DMT can make it more difficult to determine what part of the dose is strongest, due to potential uneven application of the DMT substance to the carrier. This is especially true with parsley.
DMT has also been known to be turned into an oil. DMT oils can be more evenly blended with a carrier, making for a more balanced smoking dose. DMT oils also have found their way into joints, where they are extremely efficient. They can also be more easily vaporized this way.

Orally Ingesting DMT

In order to properly dose DMT orally, it is usually advised to turn it into a water-soluble solution. Because DMT freebase is not water-soluble, it needs to be turned into a salt to make it water-soluble. Most psychonauts suggest mixing DMT freebase with a citric juice such as orange juice, lemon juice (though it is very bad for the teeth and can destroy enamel), or grapefruit juice. Any juice that is high in citric acid will work. Only about 1.5 fluid ounces, or about a shot glass’ worth of the juice is required. Depending upon the exact citric acid content in the juice, and a potential variety of other variables (differs greatly from situation to situation, substance to substance, and other random factors), the dose of DMT required to obtain a safe and effective experience may vary.
Speaking from a traditional, historical sense, DMT has been orally ingested for thousands of years. Tribes from all over the world have used DMT in a variety of rituals, nearly all of them not even realizing DMT was responsible for the hallucinogenic visions in their very many ceremonial preparations. Of the many rituals and preparations of DMT containing plants, many of them were aqueous, or otherwise beverages or drinks. There are especially a large number of drink preparations which contain DMT throughout South America. There is an even greater concentration of DMT beverages in tribes of the Orinoco basin region.

Snorting DMT

Although it is most definitely the rarest way of using DMT in modern, Western culture, snorting DMT has been extremely popular for thousands of years in other places around the world. South American cultures in specific are notorious for creating all types of resin cakes which they then pulverize into powder snuffs which are snorted. These snuffs are essentially DMT by the end of their manufacturing process. In extremely recent years, a lot of psychonauts around the world have experimented with snorting DMT freebase. Most of their experiences (nearly all of them who seem to have done it correctly and snorted actual DMT freebase) were positive and as satisfying or more satisfying than other administration methods.

What Foods Should be Avoided When Using DMT?

alcohol and DMT

Looking out for dangerous food and drink combinations while using any drug is always wise. DMT is especially inebriating already…and can have some pretty serious side effects when combined with the wrong substances, so it is a good idea for any DMT psychonaut to become acquainted with those combinations which are dangerous. It is also worth noting that the actual effects of DMT can be diminished or eliminated with certain substances (metabolically destroyed), such as MAO. This is why many ayahuasca and other DMT beverages work on the premise of combining a DMT containing plant with an MAO inhibitor. It is important, however, to avoid taking DMT if on any medicine which is an MAOI, as it will make the DMT too strong. Experienced psychonauts sometimes suggest avoiding DMT if on any prescription medicines.
Without further ado, here is a list of some of the most common foods and drinks experienced DMT users suggest avoiding when taking DMT. This list is in alphabetical order.
  • Alcohol, especially red and white wines, beer should also be avoided
  • Amphetamines
  • Anesthetics
  • Antihistamines
    Bananas
  • Calamus
  • Cheese
  • Cocoa
  • Coffee
  • Condensed soups
  • Cranberries
  • Creams of any kind
  • Dairy products that are not fresh
  • Dill oil
  • Eggs, especially dried egg whites
  • Ephedrine
  • Figs
  • Fish, only when dried or aged
  • Fruit that has bruised or is not fresh, also dried fruits should be avoided
  • Gravies
  • Guacamole
  • Liver
  • Macromerine
  • MSG (or hydrolyzed foods)
  • Narcotics of any kind
  • Nutmeg
  • Olives
  • Phenelalanine
  • Pickled Foods
  • Pineapple
  • Prescription medications
  • Processed Meats (pepperoni, bologna, sausage and hotdogs, lunch meat, etc)
  • Protein extracts and supplements
  • Raisins
  • Sauerkraut
  • Sedatives or tranquilizers (any)
  • Shrimp
  • Soy sauce
  • Teriyaki
  • Tofu
  • Tryptophan
  • Tyrosine
  • Yeast extract
  • Yogurt
things you can't mix with dmt

Some of these foods can create too intense of a trip, higher blood pressure, or other adverse reactions which are considered unpleasant and extremely dangerous. There is also plenty of warning against driving while using DMT; and this is regardless as to which foods one consumes. In fact, some trippers are unable to even set the pipe down before losing control of their motor functions (often a baby sitter needs to be ready to collect the pipe from the trippers hand after dosing).

What is the Safest Setting for a DMT Trip?

Many experience psychonauts and DMT experts will agree that set and setting are extremely important variables in attempting to control and encourage a positive experience on the substance. In fact, many famous psychonauts who have helped pioneer this theory, such as Timothy Leary, have suggested that set and setting can literally make the difference between an awful trip and a spiritually powerful and positive experience. Set and setting are mentioned in almost any DMT guidebook or advice from nearly any expert on the topic. Unfortunately, it may be necessary to test a few things before finding the appropriate set and setting for each individual. Admittedly, this can lead to having a few poor experiences before finally having a good one.
Other expert psychonauts such as Ram Dass have agreed with Leary in that mindset is everything. Having the right psychological mindset and intentions for a psychedelic journey, provides the substance with a kind of “positive energy” to work with. The mindset can be greatly improved going into a trip with the right research and preparation ahead of time. If a trip or is not worried about whether or not they have consumed a food which will interfere with their trip, there is a video game blasting in the other room, or where there will be a lot of foot traffic, it will be much harder to obtain a peaceful mindset. Additionally DMT can be a little too intense if there is a lot of direct light. The room should be well lit, and somewhat bright, but no direct light should be present (this would include exposed light bulbs or sunlight, for example). The light can make a significant impact on a trip. If the room is too dark, trippers often describe “mute visions,” by which there are no sounds.
Most expert advice can be summed up in the simple math of “whatever you give DMT, it gives back.” More specifically, whatever intentions, mindset, food, preparation and environment you give DMT, DMT refracts into new, but similar patterns. Hence, a worried, anxious, fearful tripper will be more likely to have a bad experience, while a calm, peaceful and properly prepared tripper will be more likely to have a positive experience.

What Are Considered Safe Doses of DMT?

Depending upon the administration method, different doses may be appropriate. Traditionally, when DMT is smoked, 15-30 mg is typically considered a hallucinogenic dose (assuming it is pure DMT). Experienced psychonauts advised never to measure doses during an experience or while inebriated, but instead to have all doses prepared in advance. There have been many tribal warnings and psychonaut experts advising against smoking more than 25 mg for one’s first experience. Some experienced DMT trippers seem to prefer to smoke about 25 mg or more with cannabis, for a lighter, giddy-like euphoria and mild hallucinations; while there are other DMT trippers who prefer smoking heavier doses without mixing the substance with anything else. Ultimately, a DMT enthusiast’s smoking habits for the substance usually seems to evolve overtime ‘to taste.’
When DMT is injected intramuscularly, doses of approximately 40 to 50 mg are used. Although, many studies and trials of the past have shown DMT to begin showing physical and light psychedelic effects at doses as low as 15 mg (intramuscularly injected). Still, most psychonauts suggest a minimum of 40 mg, as otherwise the full range of effects cannot be experienced. When measuring DMT doses, it is important to be exact and never rely on estimates. Most psychonauts and DMT experts suggest that doses over 55 mg injected intramuscularly to be a larger, heavier dose. It is usually suggested that doses of 55 mg or more be left only to seasoned and experienced DMT researchers.
Caution: It is worth noting that DPT and DET are considered more powerful than DMT, and the DMT dosages should never be used for any analog substance.
Warning: DMT is different from 5-methoxy-DMT (and other similar compounds). 5-methoxy-DMT is drastically stronger. For example, when it comes to intramuscular injection, DMT requires 40 mg for a standard, full spectrum of effects type-of trip, but 5-methoxy-DMT only requires about 10 mg or less.

Last Words On Consuming DMT Safely

No matter how much research and preparation a psychonaut has invested into DMT and DMT safety, the spirit molecule is known for being one of the most unpredictable, and powerful hallucinogens on the planet. It is highly regarded by many famous psychonauts for its uniqueness in visions, feelings and empathogenic effects. The reason it has been nicknamed the spirit molecule is because of its ability to draw a greater sense of being, a greater sense of place in the cosmos and a better understanding of the world. DMT also greatly increases emotional closeness between people and for other people, hence often being called an empathogen.
Disclaimer: Botanical Shaman authors are not condoning illegal drug use and cannot be held responsible for any spiritual journeys which may or may not be experienced.

How Does DMT Affect You? [DMT Experiences and Effects]

First and foremost, almost all psychedelic experts (including DMT psychonauts) agree that all drugs and substances can affect each individual person differently. Similarly, they typically agree that there are many different factors which very greatly influence the the way a substance can affect a person. Some of these factors include mind set, environmental setting, dose, experience, intentions, other substances and food consumed, regular diet and nutrition, and many other variables. Nevertheless, there are still a few “tell tale signs” of a DMT trip; and many experiences do tend to have some very obviously parallels and similarities between them. With a correct dose and careful preparation, one can greatly improve the chances of having the type of experience desired.

What Type of Effects Does DMT Produce?

DMT chemical

Nearly every DMT experience is different, however, there are still some effects which are more likely to be experienced with the substance. And there are usually some effects that are experienced every time (or close to every time). This list is in no particular order.

Bodily Sensations

The onset of DMT often is accompanied by a number of bodily sensations. Some people describe tingling, a sort of numb-like experience. This is more commonly described as a kind of “body high.” There are many user accounts which talk about giddiness, or a rush of exciting energy. Many times when these bodily sensations are being recognized, there is still a clear mind, and the tripper is able to communicate clearly.

Visuals, Visions, Hallucinations

hallucinations dmt

People see many things while under the influence of DMT. There are some really common visuals which seem to come up on a regular basis and many user accounts. Some of these common visuals include: elves, aliens, and plants. It is especially common to see the jungle, or parts of the jungle. The Jag wire, the Eagle, and the snake are also seen very frequently.
Many people see scurrying insects and mispercieve this as a bad omen…creating a negative experience. In reality, this is traditionally considered a good sign. Seeing snakes or insects, or even a dark colored energy, leaving the body or scurrying away from the tripper is believed to be negative energy that the DMT is cleansing from the body and soul.
A lot of people see intense lights and colors in their visions. In fact, light is such a big part of the visuals people get, that having no light can make visions mute (without sound). Similarly, having too much light can make a trip too intense and unmanageable. With the right amount of light, inexperienced DMT tripper can more accurately control their visions and hallucinations.
The visuals from DMT can be different depending upon whether the eyes are open or closed. In more intense trips the eyes are almost always closed, as the tripper can reach states of trances. It is very rare for trippers to describe the same visuals with their eyes open as to when they are closed. This may be because at any point in time where a DMT user can think about comparing open eyed visuals to close eyed visuals, they are still too coherent and conscious to have reached peak levels. As DMT begins to take over the train of thought, one usually excepts one state over the other, either close eyed or open eyed experience.
With the eyes open, the vividness of the surrounding environment greatly sharpens, colors are more pronounced, and objects may begin to morph. In a sense, open eyed visuals are much like seeing the world through a more colorful overlay. One DMT account explains it as though they were wearing special kaleidoscopic goggles that still let them interpret reality for what it was, but also for what it could be in many other colors. Some people see a type of crystallization of reality and objects in their environment.
With the eyes closed, the mind is unbound by the reality of the environment, and the true power of DMT is unleashed. Many DMT trippers see swirling patterns and fast-morphing geometric shapes. Some people see more intense hallucinogenic manifestations. DMT can create a wide array of visuals from vivid mixes of colors to full-blown alternate realities and other dimensions. One DMT account detailed being immersed in what felt and seemed like a very real jungle, despite tripping in Chicago.

Heavy Weight & Out of Body Experiences

dmt sitting on couch

A rather large percentage of DMT user accounts seem to take note of a very heavy feeling in their body. Some users explain it as though they are melting into the ground. Others describe not being able to move, almost in a “couch lock” type of position. Some merely point out in intense body high (maybe due to different preparations, lighter doses, or other reasons). In some more intense trips, the mind seems to find a way to detach itself from this heavier body, often resulting in spiritual journeys to other dimensions and worlds. Some psychedelic experts theorize that feeling this heavy weight in the body is because the mind is trying to break free. Perhaps this is even the start of a drug-induced out of body experience.

Nausea & Dizziness

Unfortunately, there are many user accounts which seem to include nausea (no matter how light or heavy). Dizziness is also a common side effect, especially in the earlier onset phase. Usually users describe beginning to feel acquainted with the experience as they get their mental bearings straight. Sometimes, there is a vertigo that may linger after the trip for a few hours, or in more severe cases, off and on for a couple of days.

Other Physical Effects

DMT trippers should be aware of the way DMT physically alters the body. During a trip, observable pupil dilation will be present. DMT trippers will also experience an increased pulse and heart rate. Blood pressure is also expected to go up. Some trippers will experience tremors. People who have high blood pressure or heart conditions should not use DMT.

What Are Some DMT User Experiences?

DMT experiences can vary greatly from person-to-person in terms of physical effects, psychological effects, visions and hallucinations, dreams, and analytical content (what the person gets out of the experience, if anything). Here are a few unedited, real (self-acclaimed) user experiences for DMT.

Dan L., USA

“I noticed before trying DMT that many people who had tried DMT before seem to be doing it for the wrong reasons in my opinion. It appeared to me that many people use DMT to get high. My research told me that DMT was a powerful drug capable of giving people epiphanies, helping them heal through painful grief, and for self discovery. It is a little weird to me that DMT is also produced in the human body, but it also made me more comfortable trying it. I suppose this is because I felt like my body already knew the chemical, and I would not be ingesting some weird synthetic crap that would be unknown to my body.
dmt experiences

Fast forward a bit, I tried DMT twice, the first time I felt like I did not do enough. This was probably because I was nervous of overdosing and understood that I could always try again with a higher dose. Two months after my first experience (which I would only describe as euphoric and with laughter), I dosed again, this time 40 mg intramuscularly. The effects this time were profound and much more noticeable physically speaking. My pulse and heart rate did go up, however, I never felt alarmed or scared. I had adjusted what I considered to be the perfect lighting for this trip, and I did see visions of my past, of the present, and of a really peaceful kind of jungle. I saw a vision of what felt like a warm sun setting on my face.
I can remember pretty much realizing why anybody in my life had made any decision they had ever made. It was an overwhelming amount of empathy for the people in my life, and I started to realize that day that I had been extremely selfish up until that point in my life. People today say that I am much more pleasant to be around, despite not knowing about my DMT trips. Truth be told, the substance has made such a positive impact on my life that I am confident I owe everything to my self-exploration.”

“I have used DMT six times in my life. I can recant each experience as if it happened yesterday. Not any of my six experiences were the same. None of the sets or settings of my experiences were the same. Half of my experiences were in the wild, or nature if you prefer. Half of my experiences were alone (ironically the same half that were in the wild).
Every single one of my experiences involved seeing elves or dwarfs which seemed obsessed with wild growing vines that would fill the room or trees around me. Sometimes I still dream about these elves and dwarves, and their vines. I am totally sane and I have since reached my PhD. The dreams are not scary, but actually comforting. They tell me that I took a piece of the DMT experiences with me. They also tell me that I took a piece of the DMT itself with me.

I believe that I am more spiritually connected to the Earth and universe than people who have not experienced DMT. I also believe that DMT has opened pathways for me in my mind which I can reconnect to in my sleep. These pathways lead to clarity and a lucidity of thought which presents itself the following day in messages that are clear as can be. I do not believe that it is prophecy or divination. I believe instead, that I am simply more connected with the network that is life and our world. Or if you prefer, more receptive.
Although I now feel like I have achieved a higher consciousness and no longer require DMT to experience these spiritual benefits, I would never discourage someone who is curious from looking into DMT themselves for the same reasons (to seek enlightenment, to find one’s true place).”

“I have been curious about DMT for years, ever since college. I have heard so many things about how life changing it can be and the hugely positive effects it seemed to have for many people. I also heard that it broadens perspective and worldview. Being that I am much older now, I thought the years had passed for the opportunity to present itself ever again to try DMT.
But low and behold…it turns out that you are never too old for DMT. I read a book that had an experience by a Timothy Leary, a super famed psychedelic drug advocated. Leary seems completely coherent, strongly educated, and a die hard believer that LSD and other psychedelics can be a life-changing, positive experience with the right intentions.
After reading about Leary’s research and experiments, I decided to pursue the life-changing experiences I had heard Leary and others talking about for years. And I have to say, using DMT truly did change my life. Perhaps it had a more profound effect on me because of my long history of withholding from using it. Perhaps this tango through time made my trip more intense. Whatever the reason, I had an experience which can only be described as divine. I re-experienced my birth, seeing everything for the first time again. The physical effects were euphoric, a little sedating, incredibly pleasant with a sense of tingling. And there was white and the light everywhere.
There is almost no better feeling in the entire world then being born.”

“I first try DMT at a friends house. He was a lab assistant to an adjunct professor overseas for a while. I have no idea how he got it in the country, or maybe he even prepared it here, however what I apparently ingested was pure DMT. We chose an oral ingestion, something he had done before using lemon juice and grapefruit juice combined. I felt the effects almost immediately, within a few moments, and no longer felt like talking. My friend must have predicted this state, as he had put on some ultra smooth jazz.

To me, it felt as though the music were coming to life, as if I were in the room with the musicians and they were playing the song especially for me. It felt as though the song were isolated in time, as though it were being replayed in the exact moment it were recorded just for me. I could see the notes in the air, but in the form of light rays. I could feel the notes in my mind. Although it felt as though I was floating above my body right along with the music notes, I was still watching my body make movements which were matching how my mind perceived the music notes.
In retrospect, this was probably because of the disco ball in the room with us (I later learned that lighting is extremely important when you do DMT and I probably should not have had the disco ball in the room with so much rave like light). The song felt like it lasted forever, but when it was over I was able to think completely clearly, clearer than I had ever thought in my life. I knew what I had to do: become a musician like I always wanted.”

Dimethyltryptamine Effects May Be Wide-Ranged

Certainly some effects are more likely to be experienced during a DMT trip than others, however, it is also true that there is an extremely wide range of effects. Some of these effects are considered unpleasant, being experienced by only a few DMT trippers (i.e. psychosis or severe paranoia). There are a few unpleasant effects which can be common, such as like nausea or headache. Obviously, there are also effects which are more extreme than others; and as well some effects that are barely noticed at all! With how differently DMT can affect each person, active monitoring of a tripper’s health and state of being is always advised (such as in the form of a babysitter or other controlled setting). And while many different effects can be anticipated, it is always wise to remember any hallucinogen can become unpredictable with the wrong set of variables.
