I've searched online for information on this for quite a while but I've never found very much information on it.

For the past 6months, I have got myself addicted to Nytol (diphendramine) Initially I would use it for the purpose intended, to help me sleep. Over time, my tolerance heightened and now I am at the stage I don't take it solely to help me sleep but moreso for the 'buzz' I don't know if that is the best word used to describe it. But I enjoy it and therein lies the problem.

Generally I am taking one packet of nytol per night (16 pills. 50mg diphendramine each) and I know this is doing me no good at all.

Have you any experiences with this? What kind of help would I be offered if/when I go and see my gp?

Any advice/information greatly appreciated.

I've dabbled in it (ages and ages ago, before I could get 'proper' drugs), and all I can say is what I recommend to anyone trying to get off something: taper. Gradually lower your daily intake until there is little left, and the final step won't be nearly as bad. Considering what high-dose anticholinergenics are like, I'd hate to think what the withdrawal syndrome might entail.

are you seriously eating 16 50mg benadryl?
that should cause realistic hullucinations like seeing and talking to people who are not there type shit. From what i have read benadryl is not unlike datura at the 100mg+ and from my experience with it(around 300mg) it is not fun at all just kinda scary (gaint spiders appearing every where among other things) also it actually becomes hard if not impossible to sleep at that high a dose.
I guess with a tolerance your not experienceing the delirium?
the only advice i can think of is to agree with dave and start tapering off of it night by night,(never heard of physical withdrawl from it) this might cause a sleeping problems but that much benadryl should cause sleeping problems anyway
good luck, sorry im not much help

^I've expericed strong tolerance to doxylamine succiante, another sedating anti-histimine. After a while, the delerious threshold kind of gets higher ;)

OP, if you were to see a GP you might be able to replace benadryl with a benzo or something like zopiclone or zolpidem, but those drugs are a LOT more addictive then benadryl. Really, you need to try and taper down until you only need a smaller amount- 100mg at most, and even then you need to skip nights.

Not the best advice, but you could try smoking cannabis before bed. Its a lot safer then any anticholinergic, and certainly makes me sleepy (and is pleasureable of course :)). Either way, weed is better, in a health sense, then either benzo's or antihistamines.

Start taking something like soy lecithin to increase your brains levels of acetyl-choline; the main effect of benadryl is to stop the release of this neurotransmitter.

Take care :)

Wow, you must have some really unique brain chemistry to be able to enjoy benadryl at all much less in those amounts. I do remember when I was a kid my parents would give me benadryl on an almost nightly basis for my allergies and I do remember enjoying the strange little twilight world I'd enter but that's about it.

Once when I was really experimenting with every kind of drug I could find I took nine benadryls one night when I didn't have any weed. It was extremely uncomfortable and I don't think I've taken more than two at a time since then. I do think it compliments opiates and or benzos when you're about to go to sleep sometimes, but I've never heard about someone becoming addicted to it.

I cant imagine it would be good for you, I'd honestly recommend smoking weed every day over taking that much benadryl. My doctor told me it was unhealthy for me to take even two benadryls nightly and scripted me ambien saying it was safer.

If you're really concerned, or even if you're not you should probably get some professional medical advice. Best of luck to you. I don't know what other drugs you've done, but if this is your first drug experience better be careful when it comes to the classic drugs that people tend to get hooked on.

can using these substances result in a physical dependence?
i dont know for sure, but my first inclination is not, and so the addiction is psychological? please feel free to correct me ...

That's what I have found strange, I can honestly say I have never had anything remotely like a hallucination. Surprisingly as well, I still sleep as sound as I did when I first started taking it. I'm goiing to try slowly coming off it.

Thanks

When i was younger and had bad allergies i was taking the recomended amonut of diphenhydramine in the run of a day for a long time. The only thing i noticed when coming off it is that my allergies got so bad i could barely breathe. Fuck that sucked ass but was nothing compared to coming off alcohol or opiates.

The physical dependence with this drug is fairly negligible, most withdrawal symptoms tend to psychological. I have relied on this stuff, taking 150mg/night, for the better part of 3 years in order to sleep with little ill effects. Of course, at the aforementioned dosages you are taking are risking serious damage to your heart actually; so try to be mindful of that. As was mentioned earlier, taper of your dosage by 50mg/every two to three days and you should be able to avoid any major episodes of withdrawal. Interestingly, this happens to be the drug of choice for those that are trying to ween themselves off a serious benzodiazepine habit; likely due to its ability to mimic the GABA-ergic effects those drugs have as well as temporarily boosting serotonin levels in certain areas of the brain. Hope this helps, best of luck, and sleep well!

ouch. the hangover from beneadryl is fucking unreal! I actually believe benadryl causes brain damage. I remember when i used to take like 100-150 mg during WD, the next day I would feel like total shit. I think it kills more brain cells than a heavy night of drinking and that was at low doses!!

diphenhydramine is some scary shit bugs crawling on u seeing footsteps and hearing them amongst other things and the worst kind of paranoia

how much should i take to help me fucking sleep? I cannot fucking sleep, I am going through suboxone withdrawal now. sorry for hijackin the thread yall but im bout to chug this beer and eat a bunch of these fuckers so i can sleep. haven't slept in 2 days, yeah its bad.

In college, I had so much stress that I would go nights on end without sleep, so Nyquil was one of my best friends back then, now I just use the bevy of Rx sleep aids I've been given (though sometimes my angst can fight through them.
