Difference between indica and sativa. How do you tell?

I was reading on here some people discussing that they smoked a primarily indica strain, or a primarily sativa strain. The guy i buy from doesn't know what it is, so i don't either. Do these people know this because their dealer told them, or is there some other way to tell like how the weed looks or how the high feels?
