I have been offered to participate in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy because of my double diagnosis of bipolar disorder and drug abuse (currently maintained by opiate replacement therapy).

Have any of you gone through this and what are your general thoughts about this method?

I've been in a few groups with DBT being practiced, nothing too intense though. I think, and I may be off here, the focus is on mindfulness, paying more attention to things. This guides you to be more present-oriented, and not think about the future. For instance, it may help you get through the day clean without mentally torturing yourself about the prospect of being clean forever.

DBT and CBT have a lot of popularity these days in the mental health field. But they take time and effort to be effective. The first few times at group things might appear weird and/or meaningless, but after a good two months of regular attendance, and practice at home and in daily life, it tends to help people. Good Luck.
