A new space company called Deep Space Industries (DSI) will be making a live broadcast later today to announce its plans to begin asteroid prospecting operations by 2015. DSI will be launching a fleet of mini spacecraft into solar orbit to identify potential targets near to Earth that would be suitable to mine. Lacking the resources of some of the bigger players in the space rush, DSI’s probes will ride-share on the launch of larger communications satellites and get a discounted delivery to space.

The news brief will be broadcast from the Santa Monica Museum of Flying via Spacevidcast and will detail DSI’s plan for a two-pronged approach. Initially, 55-pound (25kg) “FireFly” cubesats will be launched on journeys lasting from two to six months. Then, in 2016, the 70-pound (32kg) DragonFly spacecraft will begin their two-to-four-year expeditions and return with up to 150 pounds (68kg) of bounty each.

%) Who wants to be a space miner with me?

I hope they implement an efficient means of repeated trips into space. I do not support massive amounts of fossil fuels being used for their private profits.

The argument would be that if it's economical it's economical. There aren't many carbon credits to buy and the cost of mining these materials is already high in carbon.

space elevator ftw. hurry the heck up!

^ I wholly agree.

So, no one else thinks it would be absolutely amazing to be a space miner?

nah, rocks is rocks, man. mining x infinitely more dangerous = no thanks.
i think i'd rather just wait for the scenic tour or 100% realistic virtual experience. both are probable within my lifetime.

Psh. frequent, routine, and free trips to outer space. you get to wear a space suit. (at least while constructing the mining facility) you get a plasma cutter. (lol, eventually) don't be chicken.

I'll take you up on that.

^see, he knows what's up.

The only thing cool about being a space miner would be the fact that you were in space.

The mining part would most likely leave you asphyxiating at some point.

I'd rather be a space flower arranger, or a space poet. They pay people to write in space, don't they?

Meh. I will agree that it's the prominent reason.

I doubt it. If it ever comes to fruition, I imagine the safety regulations being quite extreme. I also own a few gas mask's, I'd wear one if need be.

those aren't conceivable, but thanks for playing.;)

i'd be a space union organiser. arranging a picket line in three dimensions sounds like a fun challenge. ;)

honk if you are in space and can't hear honks but support our workers =D lookit all that deafeningly silent support!
