The pits of hell
My little one has a cold. She is 3. I have childrens Benedryl, Tylenol for when she had a fever and DEX PC syrup from an old cough she had. I think the DEX PC also had a decongestant in it. She isn't coughing but if it would help dry her up better than the benedryl I am all for it. There is no need to take her to the ER as she is not running a fever this is more about her comfort at this point. What would you guys suggest I do, and what do you know about DEX PC Syrup? I know the runny nose is making her miserable so any advice would help. The DEX is cough syrup her cough isnt insane but the last time I gave it to her it dried her nose up as well.. the pediatrician said it was okay to give her that instead of benedryl... just wanted to know what you guys think as I value your opinions.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah i'd give it to her, it shouldn't be a problem and will definatley ease her pain.

I know from personal experience a runny nose to a kid is torture to them.

So yeah def. give it to her
I hope she feels better :)

^Thank you so much!! :) I just wanted to make sure. It is her script and all. She has had benedryl this morning is there anti histamine in it?

honestly I haven't given my 2 year old anything with dex or diphenhydramine in it, as they have tightened the regulations on them saying your shouldn't administer those meds to toddlers. I am a bit overprotective though. I remember reading on case file where a toddler didn't have the necesary enzyme to process dextromethorphan and ended up dying from a child sized dose. that stuck in my head. so I've never given my little girl any of that stuff. only thing I give her is childrens claritin which has minimal side effects and when her nose is stopped up I use a battery opertated aspirator which she hates but gets the job done, just drop some saline solution in her nostril and hold her down and suck all the snot out. like I said she will struggle but it's for her own good.
peace

Thank you for your post. We have done the saleine here she thinks of it as waterboarding.. lol.. she had a really bad cough last year and the dr gave her a script of that cough syrup because she couldnt sleep.. It was the croup cough.. she would cough so hard she would vomit (we wound up in the ER til 7 am over this). It was horrible. I gave her a half a dose of it.. it cleared her right up and she is running around and having a good old time. We are just happy to see her feeling better.

My husband and I both were very leary of giving it to her as well.. but this time we felt the benefit outweighed the risk. Where did you get the aspirator? My daughter rarely gets sick, I am lucky there but alot of my friends have nebulizers and stuff like that for situations like this because of their kids getting sick in the past... I don't really have anything. At first I thought it was allergies, but it wasn't. Just a cold. :(

Thanks again :)
