:( So i am having a colonoscopy in june...& i am FREAKING NERVOUS. I know they are sedating me but i really wish i was totally asleep. (kwim)?

I have the laxatives & the pico powder solution & im thinking of taking half a xanex before b/c im terrified of needles (IV)...Has anyone been through this & can u reasure me?

:(

I've had it done twice, along with endoscopy. Both times they put me out (a short twilight sleep)
So you shouldn't need to take anything beforehand. You might feel more comfortable asking the staff
what type of anesthetic they plan to use because maybe it wasn't explained to you.

thanks...i feel a bit better. all i know is they sedate me via I.V.

I had a bad experience about 10 yrs ago, was during a sigmoidoscopy & the pain was unbearable...later i realized i had no pain meds or any sedation. No WONDER it hurt. since then i have avoided the procedure. now i have a NEW dr & since i am over 50 he wants me to have it done.
Im sure it will be ok...sometimes the anticipation is worse than the actual procedure. ;-(

So the colonoscopy takes a little longer and they will put you out for that. Now I know why you're scared because for some reason, the medical community doesn't think anesthesia is necessary for a sigmoid. Don't worry because this time, you won't feel a thing. The shittiest part for me (no pun intended) was having to take that medicine to clear bowels the day before! :)

First they'll sedate you, and it'll be enough that you feel loopy and somewhat disconnected from the situation. Then they'll insert a tube to fill your colon with air prior to inserting the camera. Most of the discomfort is from the air, not the probe. Just breathe regularly and try not to tense up.

Once they're done, you'll have the biggest fart of your life, and then you'll feel much better. :)

I would strongly advise against taking anything before you go in unless you know exactly what they will be giving you. When I had one I don't know what they gave me but not only was I not allowed to drive out of there they wouldn't let me leave on my own I had to get picked up by a sober person.

A previous poster was right the worst part is the powerful laxatives and eating restrictions prior to the procedure.

Rest assured its not so bad :).

so i called the dr & his receptionist told me it was ok if i took half a xanex beforehand. I have a fear of needles as well as the procedure in general....i guess it couldnt hurt. Am not looking forward to drinking the vile tasting pico solution...YUKK

I had a colonoscopy last October, sedated with IV midazolam/fentanyl. It'll do the job just fine (if that's what you're having). You likely won't remember anything at all, I woke up a couple times and had to be redosed (GABAergic tolerance from drinking), but it just felt a bit weird when that happened, it wasn't horribly uncomfortable or anything.

Am not looking forward to drinking the vile tasting pico solution.

That was the worst part, and all the shitting that accompanied it.

Upate....I got through it....yippeee!!~~

u were all right,,the worst part was the prep & not being able to drink 6 hrs Before the procedure...i was dehyrated & had a wicked migraine. The IV insertion was PAINFUL as hell! she had to jab me 3 times,,,she said i had thick skin....(wth)? i asked the dr to knock me out totally & HE DID! i felt great when i woke up & nurse said it went very well, no issues at all. My son & I took a cab home.

SO GLAD ITS OVER. :D

I'm glad you did well with the procedure. Does the doctor say everything's fine or do you find out at the next consult?

OK I don't need one at all for a long time but is there any way they can examine your colon without doing prep (taking laxatives), being put under anesthesia, and doing a colonoscopy? Would getting a CT scan or MRI work?

^ They generally only do CT/MRI scans for areas of the body that cannot be explored conventionally, like the brain. Since the bowels are hollow and they can explore them endoscopically, it would be a waste of medical resources (and way more expensive) to do a CT/MRI.

OP, I'm glad the procedure went without a hitch. :)

MRI is far too expensive to run on something as simple as a colonoscopy, and CT or X-Ray should be avoided unless necessary because it can damage cells. :P
