Has anyone had a major in Animal Science? What school did you go to?

If Not does anyone know of any good schools for an animal science major?

Travelling may not be an option so mayby some online schools to start then transfer?

I heard University of Maryland has a good program... any others?

I am interested in more of the education aspect of it instead of pre-vet.. Become an animal curator at a wildlife zoo/park/theme park...

I am interested mostly in exotic animals mainly Avian..... Penquins, Macaws, Cockatoos etc etc....

I would like to be the one who teaches the public about how endangered these animals really are... the 1 on 1 animal interaction is def a positive for me....

I used to be an Animal Care Specialist at the Rainforest Cafe Restaraunt where I took care of 7 exotic birds... 4 Blue and Gold Macaws, an Umbrella and a lesser sulfer crested cockatoo, and an eclectus.

Also I did go to college for 4 years BUT I did so terrible and the fact that I still owe them tens of thousands of dollars in order to release my transcripts I guess I would have to call my high school for trasncripts right? I could care less if I don't get a single college credit transferred... wouldnt mind doing college all over again so to speak now that I am older and wiser.... Is it generally easier for a 30 something to get accepted into a college? Will they seriously go by my SATS which I took almost 14 years ago?

i have a friend who is an animal trainer and she double majored in biology and psychology. i doubt you could do much online, because i imagine you would need science classes with labs. or maybe your community college might offer something?

you would be considered an adult student, and some university's have different admissions for adults. just check some schools in your area.

I don't know what kind of budget you are on. But, have you looked into King's, Wilkes, Misericordia or the U of S? Is animal science the same thing as zoology?

If I'm not mistaken, most animal science degree program focus more on livestock related stuff. A degree in Zoology or Wildlife Biology seems to fit your interests better.

As for whether getting into college at 30 is easier, many times it is. There are plenty of colleges that don't require you to submit SAT scores if your an adult/non-traditional student. At most colleges, you would fall under that category. I think most still require you to submit a high school diploma or it equivalent. I also think you would be required to submit the transcripts of any previous colleges you've attended, but check with the schools your interested in.

What you need to do is look at different schools, look through their catalog, read course descriptions, and see if they have a program that fits your interests. When you do find a school that interests you, contact the school with any questions about the admissions process that you may have.

Oh, and about whether you could complete a degree online, I doubt it. The area you're interested in requires lots of science courses. Generally speaking, science courses are hard to offer online 'cause many have lab components, which you really need to be present in person to complete.

I did a degree in Animal Science, Physiology & Nutrition but it was in the UK. We studied the higher vertibrates - horses, cattle, pigs sheep & humans. Although there were modules that included pharmacology parasitology and of course lots of biochem. The focus was most definitely on livestock care, intensive farming and meat production, which wasn't exactly what I wanted so as Birdie said look very closely at what the courses include. Universities are able often to provide you with a list of the employment graduates of a particular course went on to do and this can be very revealing. Had I investigated this I would have learnt that most grads of my course went on to work for animal feed companies and research labs. The Human Anatomy module was good though - bit of a shock to walk into the disection room and be faced with 'my' corpse for the next 3 months!!

Kings and Wilkes are literally around the corner from my house... I know Kings is $$$....

LOL I used to walk by it every day before getting a car to go to work...

The online thing was for general course credits... English, Math etc etc but then mayby I could start at Luzerne County Community college take the required maths, englishes, history etc etc then just go on for more specialized courses ala carte!

The reason why I stated University Of Maryland is because I think they have an Avian department... my short research has led me to also find that most ANimal Science degrees focus on livestock and cattle...

My previous college degree was in Computer Programming.....

Squeaks, I have done a bit of research on your behalf. Given that you list your location as in PA, I've catered it toward a few programs you might find suitworthy and local. Note that some are Bachelors, and some are for Associate's Degrees.

Delaware Valley College

Penn State

[Note, to anyone interesting in this field, here is a good place to begin research.]

So you did obtain a degree from your first program? If so, then your debt has nothing to do with transcript release (and I cannot see how it would even if you didn't graduate). Whoever told you that is off of his/her rocker. Simply contact the admissions office of your former school and request a transcript copy. The people working there will be educated in how to get such to you, and how to make it "official."

Is it easier for a 30-something to get into college? In general, no. At some schools, such as the prestigious ones or small liberal-arts colleges, they do anything they can to keep the students all straight out of high school. At larger schools, or less snooty places, then 30-somethings are definately welcome. They will probably *look* at your SAT scores, as well as your grades from your first program, but again you will have other chances (such as an interview) to contribute positively toward your application status.
