College and Health Insurance

I cant get benefits from my job so if i didnt join college i would have no insurance, (staying on ur parents is allowed until age 24 if you a student, 19 if you not. i just turned 20.)

maybe its different by state, but where im at its 23.

been without insurance and still in college. i am so fucking paranoid because i average about 2 ER visits a semester.

/knocks on forhead

Jeezus that sounds like a fucked up system. I knew it was bad, but I didn't realise how bad...

Move to Australia. Srsly.

CB ;)

it has nothing to do with state, unless its the state gov that is paying the insurance. i think hers is from the fed gov. and they are universal with 24, i believe.

Second, while i appreciate your extremely astute observation, i would appreciate it even more if you would put aside your condescending attitude long enough to contribute to the thread other than to drop hints that you think what im doin is stupid.

lol someone tripped the 'gansta on/off' switch ;)

in all seriousness, whatever you got to do to get healthcare... damn. come to britain, all the doctors are shit but you don't have to pay for them!

^ healthcare is free? so when you're sick you just walk into the hospital or doctors office? no bill or anything?

whats crazy about the US is that the more you pay (or the more your company pays) for your insurance, the better care you recieve.

my dentist up until last year is an example. I was on my moms insurance policy, so I was basically forced to goto the dentist from hell! When he was cleaning my teeth, smoke was coming out of his cleaning tool thingy! fucking smoke! and it smelled like a dead squirrel. And plus the tool that the dentists use to spray water in your mouth, then suck it out with that vacuum thing, that was broken too! So he was like "if you want to rinse your mouth out, there's some dixie cups in the bathroom over there." whatdafuck!

also that the crown he put on my tooth came out 6 months after he put it there, and his solution was to cement it back in, but it came out again that very same day. So I'm stuck with no insurance, and a tooth thats held in place with fixadent! I'm gonna to burn that mother fuckin dentist office to the ground one of these days.

why is this crazy? same system working on everything else in this country, the more you pay the better the shit. pretty much.

yea, over there they have public health service or whatever its called, while i dont know if i believe it to be the better system, it definitely serves its purpose. i canada also has public health care.

Pretty much every single other "western" nation has a decent public health system... Its pretty fucking important imho. It's scary that the US is so far behind in public health...

Haha, hell yea, Yo, you use the words you gotta use to say what you gotta say. It aint my normal way of speakin but I aint unable to lay it down so the snooty "im-better-than-you" set can get off their high horse and see that how you talk dont necesarily mean you aint intelligent. 8( ;) Gotta be versatile yo.

Anyways, that sux about your tooth Youare. IM terrified of not havin insurance becuz of that too. im scared to shit of the dentist. and i cant stand going. i know if i aint got dental insurance imma never ever go and my teeth will get bad but i have such a bad fear of the dentist that if i got that excuse to not go, i wont :\

The shits pretty wack out here in the US as far as that goes.

i cant make money cuz im in school instead of work
If you hate it so much, why not quit school and just work? I just don't understand why you would pay..im guessing around $800 in tuition for 3 months when you could just work and pay $75/month for a decent health plan.
I figure one trip to the hospital emergency room comes in about $10,000 without insurance so $1000 a year for comm. college , and sticking on my moms insurance plan, is about worth it.
But if you weren't in school, you could spend less money and get better insurance....I still don't get it. Nothing is forcing you to stay on your mom's insurance, nor is anyone forcing you to attend school.

When i got there, the kids didnt even know the reason why you shouldnt design graphics for print in RGB color. it turned out to be "Baby ABC's of beginner design for dummies."
nothing really related to character design or style development, just how to make circles turn into squares and bounce around the screen
the only problem is...i learned to do it her way in 3rd grade and now i am way beyond that shit. i already know the shit that the teacher is sayin. its all shit i learned and developed like 7-8 years ago.
You are so ADVANCED, that's the problem. Yes, I see now. The reason school sucks is because you are so much smarter than your teachers and your fellow students. Yup.

If find it hilarious that, while you say you would wipe your ass with your transcript, you also have the arrogance to presume that you are already "educated."

If you are such an advanced student, why not just ace all your classes? Grades are what society uses to verify your level of achievement. You have to acquire a lot of basic skills before you move on to the next level. As you have noted, you already have a lot of basic layout and graphics skills. Why not just work in this field? Oh btw, if you ever want to move up the ladder, you might want a college degree.

As long as you have this chip on your shoulder, you won't succeed. I used to be like you. I thought the same things about my very first community college poli sci classes. I had already read a lot of political writing and I felt like it was review. All I really wanted to do in life was play music. I was very good, good enough to go pro. But I stuck with the prescribed transfer program, because that rational voice in the back of my mind told me that if I got enough community college credits, I could transfer to a 4-year university. In fact, I DID transfer (after 2 long/boring years) and then I completed my B.S. in political science and am now gunning for medical school. If you told me 6 years ago (before starting college) about my current plans, I would have laughed and said something like, "I don't care, I don't want to buy into the SYSTEM!" lol :)

You have that same rational voice - it advises you to do certain things, for example, to make sure you have health insurance. But it also tells you that hard work will open opportunities for you in the future. The more classes you ditch, and the more F's and withdraws you rack up....the less likely you are to get into a university, grad program, etc. Most everybody goes through a difficult period like this...where they don't know what to do. Now it is just a matter of time before you progress beyond the "not giving a shit" phase to the "giving a shit" phase. It's a bitch at first, but not too bad, all in all.

i dont think she wants anything to do with grad school, or even a standard university.

you make valid points, however, in the end it is far more expensive to live on ones own, pay insurance, living expenses, ect. if the parents are willing to pay for classes, and you are willing to take advantage of this (blow off class and waste their money), then staying in school is not a bad plan.

your right, delaying the inevitable; this seems to be central to human nature, applicable in many instances of far greater importance (fucking look at the hoover adm. during the beginning of the depression, classical economic theory is complete shit). is it 'right'? maybe not. but it is certainly a tendency most of us posses. its the proverbial 'easy road', so to speak.

i agree that grades are way for society to measure ones ability to achieve, but not a measure of ones achievement. we dont need to get into the vast numbers of incredibly successful people who failed out of or quit college.

That just sounds so wrong though... I mean my parents let me live at home, they help me raise my daughter, I dont work, and I go to school. They pay for everything, including school. You can bet your ass I am making sure Im doing my best and not taking advantage of them. Your parents do so much for you... so how is it a good plan to waste their money? It just sounds so childish. I dont waste my parents money... they are glad to help me as long as im in school and doing what I need to do to raise my daughter. But to just sit on my ass, fail school, and make them pay for shit... that wouldnt be a good plan that would just be me being lazy and inconsiderate.

yea... i didnt say i liked it, just that if you could get over that lil problem then its pretty much easy street.

but yea id never do that to my parents, it kills me that i wasted there money on accident. fuckin up in high school and whatnot. ya know, when your a kid.. or before your an adult (this realization is central to becoming one) you dont really understand that your actions effect others... like you know it, understand the concept but you just dont get it.. its part of growin up, losing that. ego centric, i believe, is the term.

dont tell me your kids dont waste your shit like its going out of style. when they are kids its breaking toys, fucking your furniture up, no respect right? they become teenagers, cell phones are expected now, car when your 16, thank you very much. i would bet that you will probably hear maybe... 5 real and unprompted 'thank yous' in your life as a parent, until the figure it all out.

i remember when i HATED talking to my folks... i mean fuckin hated it. couldnt stand them for anything. didnt matter they were payin for everything, giving me cars, all that shit.

but now i look forward to it. i like chilling with my parents, we have good conversations and ive learned allot about both of them as people and as individuals. shit, i gave my moms love advice haha.

YO, how many times do i have to say this. NO I CANT!!! I CANNOT GET ANY OTHER INSURANCE! DOH!

LOL. Its either MOMS, or NONE. I cannot get benefits at my job. You cant just go and be like "Hey, gimme some insurance!" How many times do i have to stress that point. IF there was any kind of insurance that i COULD get, i still wouldnt be able to afford it, so that aint even in the question.

Well have fun laughing. im glad i could entertain you my friend.

I dont want to ever move up the ladder. i hated that job. Im glad i dont work there anymore.

As long as you have this chip on your shoulder, you won't succeed.

Ok God.

8(

Dude, i understand where youre comin from, but gime a fuckin break. good fuckin lord yo. The people that say you will not succeed without college are the people who themselves are incapable of succeeding without college. It dont mean shit about anyone else and their own life. I know many people who have succeeded without college. Actually, out of my whole family , i think maybe 3 people have went to college, and i got a big family. And suprise suprise. all of them have houses of their own and steady jobs and are doin fine for themselves. So, i dont know if maybe someone forgot to tell them that they wouldnt be able to succeed without college or somethin, but, I thnk they did aight. And i aint saying "this is my family so its true." Becuz it aint just my family, its lots of people. I dont know where the people who say this type of shit come from. maybe they live in places where everyone is super rich and went to 12 years of grad school. iunno. But all i do know is, there is plenty of real life evidence that contradicts the "You are nothing without me" dogma of college. Kinda like jesus heh. "college is the way, the truth, and the light. there is no other way besides college." 8)

I used to be like you. I thought the same things about my very first community college poli sci classes. I had already read a lot of political writing and I felt like it was review. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHH! I DONT WANT TO GET INTO A GRAD PROGRAM! I DONT WANT TO GET INTO ANY OTHER COLLEGE! IF I NEVER EVER GO TO ANY FORM OF SCHOOL EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE I WILL DIE HAPPY.

Whew, had to get that out, aight. I jus dont know if i can possbile emphasize enough how much i want to do the opposite of this shit.

This aint a 'difficult period." I have known my whole life that i dont want to go to college and never planned on going. College is not the default version of life, where, if you aint got nothing else to do , you just go to college. I know SOME PEOPLE work their life this way, and they go to school and do the accepted thing that they are supposed to do, but it aint like i been along that path and am now havin problems goin thru with it. i never been even on the same fuckin street as that shit , you get me? I aint "goin thru a rough patch."

FOrget for a minute that this is about college, and just say its about anything that someone could do. Would you want to go to a place 3 times a week that does nothing for you and bores you? Would you want to go there if you KNEW that what you plan on doing later on, has nothing to do with it, and it is not getting you any closer to your goals and is actually making it harder for you to achieve your goals? Would you want to do it if its taking up all your time, making you miserable, for NO REASON because theres NO POINT to it and you have NO INTEREST in it?

Dont give me the bullshit "I would if i knew it would make it easier for me to get a job" or whatever bullshit. becuz i said pretend this aint school.
Just take it at face value, would you, yes or no, want to devote a very large amount of time to something that you REALLY DONT CARE about and is not a part of what you plan on doing with the rest of your life?

Like do yall just think ill be there one day and its gonna be like "oh, okay, well, now i suddenly want to go to college! "

I already worked shitty jobs for the past 4 years. I know what its like to not have a college education because i dont. you aint gotta tell me.

Keep in mind i aint some highschool kid who decides i dont wanna go, and then graduates HS and all that shit, and still didnt get hit with the reality check. I know whats up, and I been knowin.

And, becuz i been there , livin the life of a non college educated worker, these past years, i also know that it really aint that fuckin bad.

So, This aint some period or phase im in. it has nothing to do with "the system" or bein "rebellious" or nothing like that. How hard is it to understand that i just aint gonna go? not happening. Think for a minute if someone told you some shit you were totally against, not even slightly interested in in any way, and never even considered doing before, and then told you that in order to live your life well , you HAVE to do it. thats how i see college. To you, its a reality that you need. To me, it aint nothing. i existed and lived my life without it so far, i think i can continue doin that.

Im askin for advice on how to deal with juggling work and "school" so i can keep my insurance, not advice on if i should puruse a formal education in college.

Dont take nothing i said in here in any wrong way cuz i did alot of "yelling" in the post but just makin a point here.

Whoa dude, now, hel no, this is where you and me are VERY different.

KIDS are how you RAISE them.

IF you dont raise your kids to be spoilet fuckin brats they aint gonna be.

Thats the differnce between growin up rich and poor. Man i never asked my parents for SHIT. No i never broke a toy, becuz i knew that if i did, I WASNT GETTIN ANOTHER ONE! I never got a car at age 16. I never got a cellphone when i was 14. i never had cable TV for christ sakes. not sayin "oh i was deprived" i wasnt, just sayin, yooo, if you think all kids are naturally like that, you dead wrong.

Its called discipline and a smack upside the head yo. ;)

But i dont want this to get into a kid raising discussion, just pointin out that waht you say is true, for a spoiled kid but dont assume that those are the norm.

i buy my own clothes, gas, alot of my own food, my own shit if i want anything that aint a neccessity. i live home, eat, and go to school, the rest aint paid for me. now food and shelter are the major expenses there yea but im just sayin that taking advantage like youre sayin aint what im doin, and im also against that shit. your parents aint extortion victims man. it aint like 'get all the money you can and run'. iunno you must have some rich folks or somethin cuz i never got that type of treatment youre talkin about there homeboy.

ALL children are ego centric, thats just the way it is. part of the realization that you are not the center of the world comes when you become interested in the opposite sex. cant have a relationship thats all about one person, no ones gonna date you if all you care about is yourself.

yea, maybe i was exaggerating a little, but it was only to prove a point. and i was fucking faded out of my mind when i wrote that on vicodin and allot of weed, so yea...

i still agree with most of what i wrote though, the car, cell phone, ect. was only an example.

parents rnt rich, im not spoiled.

So, This aint some period or phase im in. it has nothing to do with "the system" or bein "rebellious" or nothing like that. How hard is it to understand that i just aint gonna go? not happening.
It's just all the more hilarious that you are in fact enrolled in college classes :)

Like do yall just think ill be there one day and its gonna be like "oh, okay, well, now i suddenly want to go to college! "

I already worked shitty jobs for the past 4 years. I know what its like to not have a college education because i dont. you aint gotta tell me.
You mentioned your interest in graphic design. And you mentioned how you are really interested in printing, layout, and art in general. You've even worked some entry level jobs in layout. That's cool, but NEVER sell yourself short. It is silly to lock yourself out of opportunities. I just don't get it. There are people in college, right now, learning tons about graphic design and all kinds of awesome stuff. They're doing class projects and internships with companies. Wouldn't you like to be there? I mean, I can understand your hatred of college if all you wanted to do was work at a grocery store. But you have interests that you could really develop in college. That's what I don't get. And to top it all off, your parents are actually paying tuition for you to take graphic design classes. Something is wrong here!

Think for a minute if someone told you some shit you were totally against, not even slightly interested in in any way, and never even considered doing before, and then told you that in order to live your life well , you HAVE to do it. thats how i see college.
Nobody "has" to do anything. You choose to go to college. Lots of normal, everyday people choose to go to college to develop/hone their skills so they can be valuable, contributing members of society. Not everyone goes to college just "because their parents and counselors told them they have to." You seem to be arguing this point between the lines..and it's just not true.

Now, please, I'm NOT saying you have to go to college to be a productive member of society. BUT, the reality is that only a small percentage of people are able to become successful without any education. These are business people, very driven self-starters with a gift for organizing people through charisma and wit. I know people like this and believe me, they don't need college. I simply ask..are you this person? If you are, that's awesome...I could never do it. Definitely skip college and get out there, do your independent thing.

From another thread (thought it was particularly applicable here...written by Nihilist):
Don't be ridiculous, there's no such thing as someone who's "meant for college". That's the biggest cop-out i've ever heard. If you're smart enough to have gotten through school and gotten this far, then that's all that matters. True, some people enjoy college more than others, but you're not there to enjoy yourself, your there to study hard and learn, learn, learn something useful to take away and build your career upon. I know that you're not motivated enough to put in a lot of effort with your studies at present, but it helps a lot if you at least try to care about your grades - not just enough to 'pass' but to do really well. Some people say that grades aren't that important which i personally think is bollocks. Good grades are good grades, you'll always have them to fall back on.
