So I have been an opiate/opioid addict for the past 3 years, starting from codeine and hydrocodone and although way up to shooting tar. Needless to say, I sought help, and was on subutex maintenance for a good 6 months. I have successfully tapered down to 0.5mg, and have dropped off with not too much sickness. Luckily, I have clonazepam and weed to last me through this acute withdrawal phase, though not much physically strenuous. However, the CLONAZEPAM is a GOD-SEND for my anxiety, and with some good bud, my anxiety and withdrawal symptoms are 90% gone. One of my worries though is that I don't trade one addiction for another. My tolerance for benzos is pretty high as well, as I intermittently used them during my opiate days, and a good 4-6mg clonazepam will get me through the day, with some cimetidine for its potentiation effects.
I feel pretty content, and the euphoria is definitely there, so I just spend my evenings after work and exercise, smoking a blunt and popping a few klonopins, while bumping some chill music on my stereo makes me forget i'm even suffering from withdrawal. So enough about me, how do you feel about using benzos as an aid for opiate withdrawal?%)

There are many threads on this if you UTSE. From what I hear it is a valuable tool when dealing with wds.

Keep your use to a week tops, it can be a helpful arsenal during opiate WD's but the only thing that will make you feel completely better is another opiate such as suboxone. Also I prefer to take clonidine during withdrawals than benzos.

personally I never got into opiates, thank god. I watched way too many friends go down that road and waste so much money. I am just thankful I did not enjoy the high when I tried it. I dosed too high on perc's when I decided to try them, blew a whole 30mg each time I tried it because my friends I was with already had tolerances. I just got a shitty nauseous feeling and felt wicked fucked up and I've stayed away from that shit for almost 4 years now.

Anyway though, I would think that Clonazepam would probably work well during withdrawal, but your definitely trading one addiction for the other, as the OP mentioned. My ex-girlfriend was prescribed xanax, and I was taking them probably more often than even she was, solid 2-4mg's a day for a couple months. I never experienced withdrawals from it other than insomnia, which I dealt with previously before xanax, so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

From what I can gather, benzo withdrawal can be pretty damn horrendous, possibly even worse than opiate withdrawal in some cases. I would suggest only using benzos for a short amount of time, and definitely taper your dosage and/or switch benzos after a few weeks to one with a longer half-life such as diazepam.

Diazepam's half-life is 20–100 hours, so it's one of the better benzos to taper with. if you're dosing high on K-Pins I would strongly recommend reading up on benzo tapering to ensure you are able to get off those without any issues.

Congrats on quitting opiates though! I'm glad to see people making the right steps in life. I have faith in my college buddies to do the same, now that we're finally outta school.

Benzos are no doubt an effective tool for opiate WDs, but just as bad if you end up addicted to them in the end. Just use them as a tool, and strictly when badly needed.

Then once you get off the opiates do yourself the favor of getting off the benzos asap, taper if necessary for safety reasons.

It definitely helps dull the severity of the consequent anxiety and such. This is more appropriate for a journal entry. Everyone on here is going to agree that benzos are necessary/awesome for opioid withdrawl.

I'm going to close this thread. Yes, clonazepam and benzodiazepine's can be helpful during opiate withdrawal but only when used infrequently and with moderation. Constant dosing of benzo's can lead to a much more dangerous addiction where the withdrawal can throw you into seizures and possibly kill you.

IMO Lyrica and Gabapentin are safer AND more effective drugs to combat withdrawal. I would even venture to say they are the best non-opioid medications (along with clonidine) that can be used for this purpose.
