Yeah, fuck the Uyghur, amirite?
Who said anything about the Uyghurs?
Yeah, fuck the Uyghur, amirite?
China's #BeltandRoad Initiative (BRI) has been a trojan horse since 2013 for securing critical geopolitical footprints and resources throughout Eurasia, Africa, and South America.
...
Important to note is how China views infrastructure:
Everything is dual purpose. It may serve private interests, but it will ALWAYS serve the state's.
The Western separation of state and industry is more fluid and complex, often resulting in competing interests.
When I say infrastructure, I am specifically referencing systems of transport, as well as food, water, and energy production.
If it falls on the bottom of Maslow's hierarchy, or is a means to store and move it, Chinese interests issuing loans for it and then building it.

WATCH THE CHOKEPOINTS.
Northern and southern ports in Europe.
The gateway to eastern Africa's resources.
North/south access to the Red Sea.
A stopover port for naval vessels.
All of these projects have legitimate civilian uses.
They also have strategic military benefits.
...
China has been preparing for this for many years.
The US is just awakening to this reality, and is a generation behind the power curve.
China directly or indirectly controls 6 of 7 global chokepoints - the Panama Canal being the exception.
US influence has decayed.
...
There are two key distinctions between BRI and the US' new Blue Dot Network:
1. The US project is explicitly promoting transparent lending practices that favor the prime stakeholder
2. This is a savvy play by @realDonaldTrump, deeper than building infrastructure-as-leverage
China's BRI is notoriously opaque and predatory in its lending practices to the stakeholder nations.
Often, the terms of default on the aggressive repayment schedules requires turning over the asset to a "private" Chinese operator.
...
However, it is widely-known that many large Chinese firms involved in BRI are essentially (or explicitly) SOE's, or state-owned private enterprises.
In the maritime industry, a good example is the megaconglomerate COSCO, which builds and operates ocean vessels and ports.
This article by @EpochTimes is a useful explanation and example of the debt traps hidden with BRI's promises of prosperity for Kenya, and its critical gateway port of Mombasa.
Note, this is exactly how China acquired a Sri Lankan port in 2017.

The US is encouraging nations to think better of themselves than to jump into bed with China.
Most importantly, the US is not forcing this narrative down nations' throats.
It's the natural conclusion they will arrive at once the frame of "poor quality, debt traps, human rights abuses" is put in place.

Since the inception of the US/China trade war, US importers have been switching their sourcing from China to factories in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, and other SE Asian nations.
Chinese firms are scrambling to rapidly build new factories in these nations.
This has caused a mass realignment in logistics traffic, with new dollars flowing into those economies.
The second-order effect is a new narrative of US-led economic empowerment for countries China has been courting aggressively.
Washington, March 26 (CNA) U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed into law the Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement Initiative (TAIPEI) Act of 2019, which is aimed at supporting Taiwan's international presence.
First introduced in the U.S. Senate by Cory Gardner last May, the Act was passed in the Senate on March 11, one week after the House of Representatives voted 415-0 in its favor.
"This bipartisan legislation demands a whole-of-government approach to ramp up our support for Taiwan, and will send a strong message to nations that there will be consequences for supporting Chinese actions that undermine Taiwan," Gardner said Thursday after Trump signed the bill.
It's only come to my attention after recent events just how much the WHO seems to be in China's pocket, more than a little worrying. The WHO reported in January that COVID-19 cannot be transmitted between humans, citing research by "Chinese authorities." Helping China with their coverup.
Meanwhile the WHO does not recognise Taiwan as a country. Not only are Taiwan not allowed to be members, but they literally refuse to accept they're a country. I wonder why that could be? What powerful nation refuses to accept the sovereignty of neighbouring countries?
Crazy unpredictable times ahead.
I agree with you about media scaremongering, but China's increasing wealth and power is certainly a justified topic of discussion now. They're pretty much on track to displace the US as the world superpower. This is why the US is so terrified of them and Trump has been able to exploit this fear.
Intellectually I find this to be a very interesting area of geopolitics and I think the media focus is on the wrong areas. While the news covers whatever Trump points his finger at this week, they are pretty much missing a lot of big things China is doing under the radar, for example as I mentioned earlier in this thread they have bought out or created enough huge, well funded film production companies that they effectively hold control over Hollywood right now. They've done this in a very intelligent way and I have to admit they deserve credit where it's due.
On a personal level it truly makes no difference to me at all whether the US or China is the biggest economy. I'm English, I don't feel any type of emotional connection to either nation. I know I'm meant to care more about the US according to the newspapers but I just don't .
This could go in the Trump thread, or it's own thread, but ...
Trump signs executive order to support moon mining, tap asteroid resources | Space
So, why am I putting it here?
China: Moon Mining only Beginning of Ambitious Space Plans | National Review
= = = =
China intends to displace the US in every possible way.
All that is in addition to, and in tandem with, China’s clear intention to “establish a lunar presence to carry out manufacturing in space.”
Helium-3, given its massive potential implications for nuclear power, is sometimes considered the sine qua non of lunar resources. Indeed, Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP), has said, not entirely without foundation, that deposits of helium-3 on the moon could “solve humanity’s energy demand for around 10,000 years at least.” In 2006 he told state media that “each year three space-shuttle missions [of helium-3] could bring enough fuel for all human beings across the world.” The U.S. should be just as mindful as China, not only of these but of other lunar-wealth creation opportunities, including those for solar power.
The WHO doesn't have a clue how bad it got in Wuhan.
Anyone heard the rumours coming out of central China specifically the mass executions of whole villages of poor Chinese citizens infected with corona virus who were pleading for medical treatment but the sick and dying were commanded by the army to stay indoors and self-isolate until the symptoms disappeared and the penny dropped that in order for the Chinese communist regime to contain the outbreak of the Covid19 infections outside of the urban Wuhan district where the middle classes could get treated at hospital soldiers had to machine gun any poor rural Chinese citizens attempting to escape their homes as Beijing deemed it necessary for the dying to stay in their family members homes all for the greater good.
All we can hope for is a vaccine.
well that is a crock!!
If you can continue with your preconceived ideas about China you are doomed to extinction. You going to tell me that none of these supposed machine gunned victims had families friends and connections outside china, who could put names to the falun gong BS narrative. The CIA and the other western intelligence agencies used their connections in china to find evidence and came up empty handed, because there was nothing significant to find.
Go visit china, start with westernized HK then go through the South, then round to Shanghai and finally to Beijing if you can also go north and east. China is a big country and it is really not what you think. You will see the good the bad and everything in between.
keep praying for a vaccine, I pray for a vaccine against stupid but God leaves my prayers unanswered....
US strategy in Africa appears to involve encouraging Islamist insurgency which the good ol US army can blow up and force themselves into countries. Chinese have a superior soft power strategy recycle all those US dollars into real stuff gets rid of the dollars and gets you real stuff. Sooner or later the US will only have its military nothing else will work and the rest of the country will be a shell. Listen to what president Eisenhower said in his farewell speech. he was right.
In the last few weeks I have seen clear evidence that Chinese biotech is using every day stuff that Western academics still think is cool enough and new enough to write papers on. The gap is so so obvious. Step up your game Western roundeyes, the Chinese are ahead, miles and miles (actually kilometers and kilometers ahead) and are pulling even further ahead.
The United States and China have taken wildly differing approaches to securing their individual national security.
A key distinction - and one where China is leading - is in control of critical raw materials
In 1939, Pres Roosevelt signed the Strategic and Critical Materials Stock Piling Act into law.
Its intent was to prevent the US from being caught short of essential raw materials during a crisis, especially where the US had dependency on foreign sources.
We have failed.
...
![]()
...
Quite simply, China has made too many nations dependent on it, making full decoupling impossible.
Notably, China has been heavily targeting critical raw materials for telecom, semiconductors, satellites, batteries, solar cells, and weapons systems.
![]()
...
This is where weaponized logistics comes in.
BRI is increasingly earning a bad rap as "debt diplomacy", which caused the US, Australia, and Japan to cooperatively launch the Blue Dot Network to counter BRI in NOV19.
...
the US must completely shift its policy and structure around strategic materials. These are weapons in a time of war, and as we're seeing with COVID-19, foreign dependency is dangerous.
...
Second, the US must implement a sub-Cabinet level National Quartermaster to streamline visibility and accountability for strategic materials, as well as food, water, energy supplies (including clean-tech), and medical goods.
...
Third and finally, the US must adopt a "total war" posture towards this issue.
Most importantly will be removing the internal chokepoints that stovepipe action at the federal and state levels.
We can no longer let China control the foundations of tomorrow, today.

Is Magufuli a demigod or the general African leadership has started stepping up to Chinese Killer loans? Let’s digest it. A few years back, African leaders developed a sudden inexplicable craze for Chinese killer loans with terms and conditions that beats logic.
They sign Chinese loan agreements that they know very well they cannot pay back within the agreed time frame but mostly proceed with the loans just for the kickbacks attached and the benefits some individual politicians stand to get from such contracts to the detriment of the development of their respective nations. In most cases, the defaulted loans lead to the seizure of major facilities to make-up for the amount involved.
Following a series of constructive criticisms by reputable organizations and general outcry by concerned African citizens about the dire consequences of these killer loans on the continent, some of the leaders seem to be taking certain commendable actions to save their dying reputations.

The Chinese investors initially agreed with the erstwhile Tanzanian administration to build the said port on condition that, they will be granted a 30years guarantee, 99years uninterrupted lease with an attached outrageous demand that, the Tanzanian government will have absolutely no power to raise concerns on whoever invests in the port during the period stated.

Aside Tanzania, it could be remembered that, the Julius Maada Bio lead administration in Sierra Leon equally suspended a $400 million airport construction agreement in 2018. He was quoted to have said that: “it is uneconomical to proceed with the construction of the new airport when the existing one is grossly underutilized”.
Additionally, there have been several other resistances to Chinese backed contracts in Africa. The cancellation of a USD2 billion coal plant contract in Kenya, among few others, are typical examples of the growing awareness.
