Child porn. How to know *for sure* that teen doesnt = child?

I've seen a number of people getting busted lately on the news for posession of child porno. Mainly on their computers, somtimes on disks, printed images, etc.
My big question is, lets say I go to a porno site and check out the 'teen' section. How is the viewer supposed to know which girl is under 18, and which ones "just turned 18"? I mean, naturally in a teen porno site, all the girls look young, but is there any real way to distinguish?
We've all seen girls who look alot older than their age, maybe that is to blame? Or are their specific websites that specialize in 10-15 year olds (or whatever)? For the love of god, nobody post any kiddie porno links on here, okay?
Here is a site right here called sublimedirectory.com that has a teen section. If I go on there, am I potentially putting myself at risk? And what teen year does teen necessarily cover? I assume its 18, what about 17 or 16?
Any factual input?

The stuff the police are specifically launching operations against and going after forcefully is not the teen stuff, so don't worry about that first of all.
There is a large and lively trade in child porn, ages 5-12 to be specific. A couple of years ago I wrote an article on this for a local magazine and the research I did was some of the most horrible internet surfing I've done in my life. There are LOADS of illegal child porn sites out there, and you can access thousands of child porn images with just a credit card or a few pics of your own to trade.
It's truly disturbing how large this community is, and it stretches across all mediums, from www to irc to usenet to p2p (filesharing, not the chemical ;) )
In short, the cops have their hands so full just trying to make a dent in the hard-core child porn rings out there that I doubt they'll ever get around to checking legitimate sites for girls that may be 17 or just barely 18. There are unfortunately far worse things for them to worry about :(

Most of those people busted recently used credit cards, thats how they got traced. I know another fellow who brought his computer in to get it fixed and the tech spotted pics and turned him in... he got 4 years in jail.
I read an article a couple months ago about a cop who joined a yahoo group or somesuch, and was traced by the sting operation. They busted him on pics which he had erased, which is a bit ridiculous as he wasnt in possession, but that is the deal these days, they are trying to reduce demand.

Nobody gets busted for "is/isn't she 18?" pics; these busts are for 12 years old, or 9, or 4. You can't "accidentally" get kiddie porn.

You also have to watch out for stuff that's named something totally different. I've tried downloading some Simpsons episodes before and got one that was a porn video instead of the Last Exit to Springfield episode that I wanted. I wish there was a way to keep the rampant wrongly named files off the network. :\

teenager = a person who is going through puberty
ages 12 - 18/19 i expect

As a rule of thumb, "child porn" involves pre-pubescent children. Teen porn is not a big concern to the authorities as long as it's not blatant or violent.
Of course, if we're talking obvious 12-14 year olds like a certain videotape that's been floating around kazaa as legitimate porn, then you could conceivably get in trouble if someone saw it on your hard drive.

Look for a site disclaimer that specifically states the ages of the models. If it doesn't say 18 or over or doesn't say, then stay away.

To get child porn you usually have to seek it out, it's unlikely that a seemingly OK site would suddenly bombard you with kiddie porn.
But still, if you want to be REALLY careful, then look for the disclaimer.

hate to be a pedant but there is a big clue in the word. a "teenager" is somebody whos "age" is a "teen". the "teens" are:
thirteen
fourteen
fifteen
sixteen
seventeen
eighteen
nineteen
twelve is not a teen.
i think common useage has come to mean that teenagers are generally thought of people in their early teens. i doubt most nineteen year olds would still consider themselves teenagers nor thank you for referring to them thus. :)

Laws perpetrating people in posession of child pornography are a solution looking for a problem. In essence, society wants to prosecute people for simply being pedophiles, with little or no effort towards whether a violent or sexual crime has been committed.
This leaves the actual criminals who are exploiting children to continue distributing their handiwork abroad without consequence.

what if someone uses your comp and downloads child porn or if someone hates you, say at work, he inserts a floppy, installs child porn everywhere and you didnt delete it all? also what if your surfing the web and and a popup appears and it contains child porn? I stay away from all porn, period

Child pornographers know how the rest of society looks at them, they generally do not use popups to advertise their wares, nor do they force it uppon people randomly. It would not be wise on their part.
Most kiddie porn is not hidden, but you need to look for it, it's not something you're likely to stumble across.
Yes it is possible to fill someone's hard drive with kiddie porn, but so what if that happens? Who's gonna search your computer? I think most people would find and delete a big folder full of porn on their desktop sooner or later.
Let's not get paranoid folks, cops and society in general are generally looking to nail the real creeps, not people who accidentally stumble across things on the net :)

Just a note. If anyone reading this thread is honestly concered that they might have downloaded child porn.
#1. Remove your PC's harddrive. Do not try to Fdisk, reformatt etc.
#2. Go buy a new harddrive and start from scratch with a new OS install.
#3. Call any credit cards you used to pay for that site, report them stolen BEFORE the sign-up date of the website.
#4. Never mention ANYTHING about it to anyone.
#5. No longer visit ANY porn site, adult book shop, etc.. EVER.
Granted this is a worst case issue.. but if you really are suspect.. that's the advice.

Not necessarily. Sure they have their hands full. But the same argument holds for marijuana prosecutions...the cops have their hands full with cocaine, heroin, and other hard drugs so why would they go after marijuana.
Let's be real. Law enforcement goes after easy targets. If they find some site or some person that has 16 and 17 year olds in pornographic images, they'll likely prosecute.

craig: Sure, but the point is that it's VERY hard to prove the age of models on particular pictures. That's why they primarily like to go after, to be graphic, pictures of kids so young they are lacking pubic hair.
In any case, it no doubt varies from place to place, but where I come from there has never been an arrest for anything other than actual child pornography involving pre-teen children. However, where I live now child pornography is actually legal, due to a simple lack of legislation.
Thelazer: if you really do that, give me the drive! You can get software that can overrite and corrupt any deleted files beyond all hope of recovery. It takes a couple of minutes at most. Even 'Carnivore' can't find overwritten and corrupted filefragments.

BTW, Thelazer is absolutely correct to advise caution. You definitely do not want to get an accidental arrest for kiddie porn! The stigma of being a drug user is bad enough, being taken for a fucking pedo is not something that you want to add to that!

what if you piss someone off, say a co worker or another college student, could he get even by installing child porn in your pc, wait and read the news that you got arrested and is labled a pedo? eek!
