Gang Allegedly Hands Out Free, Phony Heroin
Multiple Victims Fall Ill After Using Drug Sample

POSTED: 4:21 pm CDT August 17, 2005

CHICAGO -- A synthetic drug disguised as heroin which caused multiple overdoses on the West Side this week had been given away by gang members in order to acquire new customers, police officials said Wednesday.

The drug, Fentanyl, was distributed for free by the New Breed street gang at the Chicago Housing Authority ABLA Homes development, Police Superintendent Philip J. Cline said at an unrelated news conference.

The fake heroin was packaged in small orange bags, Cline said.

The ABLA Homes building at 1254 S. Loomis St. has been a stronghold of other gangs and the New Breed was attempting to get new customers, Cline said.

No one was in custody as of 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in connection with the drug give away, Police News Affairs Sgt. Robert Cargie said.

Three of the victims were found around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at 1520 W. 13th St., police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden said. They were unconscious and had labored breathing, he said.

None of the overdoses or reactions was considered to be life-threatening and all victims were treated and released from local hospitals, he said.

Two of the victims were able to later tell police that a 16- to 17-year-old boy had been handing out free heroin in orange baggies at 1440 W. Hastings St., Camden said.

Since Tuesday morning, four others had been found in the area around the 13th Street address ill from the free drugs, Camden said

All heroin accepted by the victims had been consumed, Camden said.

Police were still investigating the scene and talking to witnesses, Cargis said.

Well no shit what else would you do with herion?!

What better way to establish proper street dosage. A more dilute version most likely hit the streets a few days later. :\

Its back, and still not properly cut - 12 Dead

Police: 12 Dead From Tainted Heroin
Killer Drugs Purchased On South Side

CHICAGO -- Chicago police are investigating the deaths of 12 people who may have died from tainted heroin.

Investigators saw a pattern of overdose among people who recently purchased heroin along the same stretch of South State Street, between 27th and 29th streets.

Police warned that some drug dealers might be selling fentanyl, a drug used by cancer patients that is many times stronger than morphine, instead of heroin.

NBC5's Amy Jacobson reported that two of the victims were friends from Galena who drove 160 miles to purchase the heroin. On Jan. 25 the two were found inside their car, dead of a drug overdose.

Josh Suplis, 21, was found dead in the passenger's seat of the car. His 23-year-old friend, Justin Jobjen, was in the driver's seat with the syringe still stuck in his arm.

Jacobson spoke with Jobjen's father, Randy Jobjen, who told the reporter that he wants whoever sold these drugs to be charged with murder.

"If they're doing that, that's more like murder than it is drug overdose," he said.

Police told the grieving father that they were suspicious about the drug being tainted after finding the two men.

Toxicology reports to determine exactly what was wrong with the dose are expected in 6 to 8 weeks, Jacobson said.

Chicago detectives told her that "this happens everyday." Young people drive in from the suburbs and purchase drugs on the West and South Sides.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, the victims were between the ages of 21 and 40. All of them lived in the city.

Assistant Deputy Superintendent Charles Williams said drug dealers might be stealing the fentanyl and passing it off as heroin.

Police said the tainted drugs could show up anywhere in the Chicago area.

If they were snorting it, would they have been able to tell?

Do they cut it with things that make it seem like heroin (taste/look/etc)?

I used to live down the street from there. I wish i still did and knew it was fent and didn't treat it like h

Asshats that don't cut dope correctly and kill people are scum.

Never having taken heroin I would have to wonder if a junkie wouldn't notice that something was strange about the stuff. Seems like fent wouldn't look/smell/taste/whathaveyou... like heroin.

anyone know?

Hmmm, interesting.
It's the other way round for us meth users. Why should heroin be cut.. so its easier to eyeball and not OD? Or did you mean sometihng else

^^^never taken heroin either, but i know the people down there, and know that they are stupid enough to get freebies on the street and not question the reliability and relative saftey of the shit they got. cheapest hookers in chicago ill dare say!!

Sometimes I wonder about some of the dope I have copped in Chicago, having used for the past 15 yrs I have ran into some funky dope at times.

The dope has when thru a cycle in Chiacago it was super strong everywhere from 90-98'ish, than after a alot of publicity and a huge increase in heroin users after 98'ish the quality overall has dropped off and your getting more shady characters looking to make a quick buck [or few thousand] bucks in a couple hours. Sometimes the dope that I get that I think could have been Fentanyl it wasnt to obvious at the time but thinking back on it its much more apparent. Bags were usually a really strong heavy rush, bright white powder [before Dormin because a complusive cut], and good high but it tapers of much more quickly but the main point is the holding perioid before you got sick. It would always be like half the length of your normal time compared to run-of-the-mill grade A heroin.

Some might say well the sounds about right coindciding with your, i.e. my addiction, but the dope game has changed thru the years in Chicago but overall it still hasnt changed much. Than again I used to use more and be a fuckload more into the actual scene than I am now. There used to be a certain McDonalds that people would sell pills, there was always a methadone connection available on the street if you knew where to look. Nowadaze I am sure its similar its just the police presence has increased and the dope business has just became more intergrated into the cities economy. Chicago has always been a strong hold for heroin and still is.

Splatt,
Sorry to be vague... if the dealers were honest (or knew what they were doing) and people knew what they were getting it would be a different story. Cutting dope, in general, is crummy I give you that. Selling fent as heroin knowing the dosage is way way different (or be stupid enough not to know) is a dangerous asshatted practice. That is all I was getting at.

Why does the media/police assume it's fentanyl that has been stolen. It's not like mid-levelers are stealing duragesic/actiq/ampules and cooking it down to get 5-10mgs of fentanyl powder per stolen unit. more likely scenario is someone is perforning a fentanyl synth and selling it to the upper eschelon as discounted heroin...which is then passed down onto unknowing mid-rangers.

But I really have no clue as to how the dope game works, but stolen fentanyl sounds ridiculous to me...

No. The doses for fentanyl are like looking at a grain of salt. You think after adding 1000x its own weight in cuts, that its gonna in anyway, shape or form add color/taste/smell to the overall product?

trying to sell 'fentanyl' as fentanyl is like trying to sell 5-MeO-AMT as 5-MeO-AMT, call it LSD and its 100x easier to move, call it what it is and most people give you a blank stare.
