Hi, I'm a writer and I would really appreciate some help. My main character in my novel loses her sense of smell after snorting a drug. She loses her smell permanently. Has anyone any idea what would be the best drug to use in this case? It doesn't matter if the loss of smell is something that doesn't usually happen but it needs to be a possibility. I have read a thread on this forum which details temporary loss of smell through RV but I am unclear what that means. Also would it be possible to give me some idea how she would feel after having snorted the particular drug? Thank you.

The frequent and repeated snorting of any drug can lead to damage of the mucosa in the nostrils which can eventually lead to permanent lose of the sense of smell, among other things. Just do a google search. Here is a site that states what I said...scroll down at least to the cocaine section (it is the first drug listed that people usually snort) and you will see it.

It also talks about the effects you would feel from each drug. I'm sure you will have some personal stories get posted here about individual responses to different drugs but just keep in mind the the snorting of ANY drug will cause this problem with frequent or repeated use!

Good luck with your story and welcome to BL

I would have thought that a drug that is appropriate for the character is more important than a drug likely to cause loss of smell (that doesn't really happen).

Not to be contradictory, but it absolutely does happen. Even cigarette smoking long term can cause this. I have been a nurse for 20 years, trust me, it does happen.

Thank for all replies. It doesn't matter what drugs particularly as she is offered it and takes it. It is not a huge part of the story but her resulting anosmia is very important. Permanent loss of smell usually happens after an accident, however nasal sprays have also been known to cause the problem. I was hoping for a drug as it fits much more neatly into the milieu of the story.

Perhaps with chronic use, but one dose?

In what context? Is this at a party? Under a bridge? In the United States? Present-day? Cocaine seems like it could fit in to pretty much any situation.

Yes, i thought cocaine. It's at a May Fair which a large amount of drugs and drinks are often taken. I've got the social stuff under control. I know what the characters would do in each situation. She's taken drugs before but years ago and not many, she's afraid of hallucinating so wouldn't readily take a hallucinogenic, and has hallucinated in the past just with ganja so is prone. She knows what coke looks like it and has been around people who take it regularly at parties she goes to. Her mental state before she takes the drug is that she is already shaken from being bawled it and just thinks 'Oh, do it.' What I need help with is the chemical make-up of the drug. Someone mentioned that it could be cut with zinc. Is this feasible? And would she know about it later? Perhaps the best idea is to have her use a nasal spray afterwards which I know has caused anosmia. I'm not really into the idea of slagging drugs. It would be pointless in terms of what the story is attempting to express. But she would take a drug in that situation and she needs to suffer from anosmia by chapter three! Thanks for all help.

Ahhh...no, I was referring to chronic use..I must have missed the part that said one time use! :( I apologize.

snort's something - then falls over and bangs head reallllllly hard or down a flight of stairs? (don't forget you also lose your sense of taste and its pretty much reduced to sweet, salty, spicy)
