CE&P social thread: why do the people I disagree with hate freedom so much?

video game console producers were/are running at a loss on the machines themselves. more user means the more they can charge games developers or make from games.

dunno if it helps, just a thought

I'm reading about a hypothetical scenario called the dollar auction lately.

Two rational actors are both in an auction for a dollar bill. The rules are simple:

1. Each bid has to be higher than the previous bid.
2. Each actor has to pay their bid at the close of the auction, regardless of if they win or lose.

The result is interesting. Think about it. The first actor has an incentive to bid $.01 (and gain $.99, the second has an incentive to bid $.02, and gain $.98 ... When the second actor bids $1.00 (the value of the dollar), the first actor is facing a loss of $.99, and has a very rational incentive to bid $1.01 - reducing his or her loss to $.01. Of course, then the second actor has a rational incentive to bid $1.02, reducing his or her loss to $.02...

I'm trying to think of a real-world scenario in capitalism.
this assumes two rational actors- are they required to bid in teh 1st place? can they just be observers? lol
why on earth is this something you've been 'thinking about lately'? i don't think consumer branding (or console logistics, or 24hr grocers) apply directly here..

well, the same type of logic that would make you bid $0.01, would make you bid .02 and so on up to a dollar (and/or past that value, presumably until one gets bored, or runs out of money)
capitalistic failure modes? do explain ;]

You see this guy right here?
He's not a real political man.
He watches CNN, but he can't tell you the difference between Iraq and Iran.

Been studying for the LSAT.

Logic games are really hard, definitely going to need to put a lot of effort into them to improve. I am not a natural at these.

However, I am a whiz at logical reasoning, which is 50% of the total LSAT score, worth double the two other sections. I cracked my LR book for the first time today and got bored on the 3rd page, skipped to the hardest questions in the book and got 12 or so ina row corect before I realized that I didn't need to practice these.

Im strong in reading comprehension too, definitely a confidence booster to know that if I can get logic games down ill pretty much be set for a high score.

Sitting at about a 3.35 GPA right now, id love to bring that up to a 3.4+ by the time I graduate. Im taking a bunch of softball lower division classes next semester, so that should help. If I can manage not to get too much senioritis and pull out a few A's this semester in my tougher classes ill be good to go.

Thought I'd share this photo I took with my phone at my school a while back, I think the saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is applicable here.

These crazy fundamentalist Christians that live in a small community up in the mountains close to where I live love to come to the free speech area at my campus with these signs and preach at the top of their lungs. Theyre the same brand and in the same area as the people who made that video "the innocence of Muslims" that was blamed for the attack in Benghazi. Everyone ignores them for the most part and ive never seen anyone actually stop and listen, but it doesn't seem to phase them. Sometimes someone will boo them or something.

Their message is not one of love or compassion. They mostly just yell about how we're all sinners and we need to submit to jesus or burn in the fires of hell. Ive heard them bashing gays, women, muslims ect multiple times, pretty sickening.

Id like to add that I know some Christians that are really fantastic people, and for them Christianity is all about the teachings of Christ, and not some super-judgemental BS. Christianity isnt something I believe in, but for some people it a big positive thing for them, which I am all for. Its just these crazies give the majority a bad name.

At my campus the student-run Humanist club hands out "Evangelical Bingo" cards every time one of those mofos come to ramble in front of our Student Union. Each square is marked with a typical Christian trope ("Homosexuality is a Sin!", "Evolution is a lie!", etc.) and if you make a Bingo they hand out candy and other secular goodies. Needless to say, this leads to large crowds forming around the speaker which, at first, he's all "Hah! You damn college kids are playing right into my hand!" but after a while there are so many people hurling so many factual arguments that he must retreat.

People who come to proselytize at Universities are just ridiculous.

One time we had an anti-abortion group set up huge (I'm talking 10 feet tall) pictures of aborted fetuses with captions like "I never got a chance to love Jesus" or "I could have been President" and other such bullshit. One of the people in charge of the display actually started verbally abusing a girl who admitted to having an abortion (for the sake of debate), using some very hateful speech, until the girl walked away crying. It amazes me how these people can call themselves Christians.

Hell sounds like a tempting place if I get to dine with Hitchens, Foucalt, Nietzsche, Orwell, Bukowski, etc. So I'm either dead or happy. Who needs to cling to Pascal's wager, when you are guaranteed such beneficial outcomes.

... they said this like it was a bad thing?

At this point, I think it might be a good idea to abort any fetuses that could potentially become president. We'd be doing ourselves a big favor.

Time for a fun counter-protest. I think you need a sign telling how these fine men are sinning.

Try these to start:

Leviticus 19:27

"Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard."

Or Leviticus 19:19

"Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material."

Both men are probably violating both versus.
