My boy cat becomes inconsolable when I am gone for more than the better part of a day, and basically will barely rouse himself to eat, and walks around periodically yowling sadly. Then when I get home he runs up to me and rears up to get picked up and spend the day attached to my side.
To the point of the article, my cats each come to their own name being called. Each has several names/nicknames I frequently call them and will come to any of them, but not to the other cat's names. If I say "kitties, come here", they'll both come unless they're sleeping.
