Governor Calls Attack on Power Stations a ‘New Level of Threat’

I heard about this today on the radio. They interviewed the police chief and someone else involved, but I didn't catch her role. Apparently in a part of my state, not too close to me, someone or some people went into first one power station hub, then another, and used some guns to destroy large amounts of equipment to the extent that hundreds of thousands are without power at the start on winter and will likely not have power fully restored for months. This is because they damaged or destroyed about $17 million worth of equipment, and until they can purchase and transport in and reinstall and repair everything, there is simply no way to get power to these people. Whoever did the deed appeared to know what they were doing and inflicted massive structural damage to vital equipment to the operation of the electric grid.

They have not arrested anyone or implicated anyone yet, but there is a far right religious podcast (I think podcast, or else radio station/show) that has called these attacks "god's will" and said that "sometimes god uses people to work in mysterious ways". It was being claimed to be God's punishment against the county because they decided to host a drag show. In the podcast/program in question, the news was delivered in a gloating manner, clearly the host was pleased with the action. Whether they had any involvement, or were just a motivating force for the perpetrator(s), remains to be seen. Though we don't know what happened yet, it seems pretty clear to me that this is an act of domestic terrorism, that is religiously-motivated. Kinda like in A Handmaid's Tale leading up to Gilead's taking over of the country. Though I will emphasize that I do not have enough information to make that claim for sure. But it sure seems that way.

Obviously a bit of hyperbole, but it scares me to know that (a) the power grid is so vulnerable (and not just power but water, too), and (b) that there are people so radicalized that they are willing to leave so many people without power at a time of the year when it gets below freezing.

why the fuck aint the power grid protected by 24/7 armed guards. Its vital infrastructure.

No, most likely it was an anti-trans nut job, from what they're saying it was "god's punishment" against.

I suspect after this, they will be posting armed guards around power stations. The US hasn't had a domestic terrorist attack on infrastructure like this to my knowledge. The ;last thing that was sort of comparable that I can think of was the Oklahoma City bombing... of course that involved killing people, too, and this did not. At last not directly (I am hoping we don't end up with people dying from being too cold, who don't have the means to buy a generator or go live somewhere else this winter).
 
The people talking about how it's "god's will" could've just been using an unrelated action to give themselves props in the eyes of their lunatic followers. It could very well be that that was the motive but it seems unclear at this point, from that article.

The people who already lap that shit up re: drag queens might like it, but I fail to see how such an action is beneficial in any way for a terrorist group or movement. People aren't going to be terrified by this kind of thing, they're just gonna be really, really pissed off
 
Holy fuck dude that is incredibly disturbing, and i bet they are gonna ramp up security around these places all over the country now. Thank goodness nobody got killed in the process, hope that people are gonna be able to figure out heating situations that is a major problem.

Will the oil furnaces not work with out electricity, the house i grew up in had one of those. But we also had would burning stove and me and my father would chop down trees, and splitting firewood was my mandatory chore all fall and winter, kinda liked doing it anyways. Its pretty crazy to think gow vulnerable we are to a situation like this.

Admittedly i dont know much about furnaces maybe some you need electricity for sure, if thats the case people would be seriously fucked up here in the North East cuz it gets cold as a mofo. Hope everything works out down there, thankfully you werent directly effected Xorky id miss you here on Bluelight. Like wtf are these people supposed to do about charging phones and running their refrigerators and etc. Having a generator going for months would be insanely expensive. Wow, this is terrible.

Yeah I agree, I don't want to jump to conclusions. The timing is just very convenient/suspicious, so it's my suspicion.
 
It seems like it might have been done by someone knowledgeable about the power stations, perhaps an employee. Still… whatever their motivation, it’s sickening to think of losing power in winter. The elements are harsh. If we lost electricity at our house for a week it could very well kill most of our pets. We have contingency plans but it’s still frightening.

What’s the contingency plan? I’ll be honest it scares the fuck out of me to not live in a house right now with a wood burning stove. Especially where I live. If we go without power here in certain circumstances for 12-24hrs a lot of people could die.

There were a couple times growing up where it happened and we were up filling the wood burner at 3am to stay warm. Soon as I can build a home that’s numero uno on list of shit to get done.

So the house we own doesn’t even have a fireplace, so that’s not exactly great… it does run on natural gas for heat but natural gas plants were shut down during the last major freeze so it’s very concerning… our contingency plan is to buy a generator at some point, plus we have “go bags” so to speak ready to house each reptile so we can drive to another city where there might be power or at least a family member with a fireplace.

So essentially our contingency plan is to pack up all our pets and drive 3 hours north or south to where we have family who could offer us shelter.

I should probably get a plan in place too. I wonder if there is a way to set up a portable style fireplace that then goes out a window with the proper flange? I’m looking that shit up right now.

For the first 10 years of living at my house, I needed electricity for heat. And the first winter, I lost power for 4 days. Got down to 34 degrees in the house AND I was snowed in with 18 inches on the ground and no snowplows coming out since I live outside of city limits. We didn't have much food either, I was totally unprepared, and was eating condensed Campbell's soup out of the can with a spoon the last day. It was really scary and I cried when the power came back.

A few years ago I finally got a wood stove put in, and I love it so much. Cost me about $4000 for the stove plus installation (they had to install a chimney through 2 floors and the roof). I use it every night that it gets really cold because there's something so psychologically nice about having a fire. Plus it keeps the power bill down. I've had 2 huge red oaks come down and so I have years of firewood if I burned it every night of the winter.

It's scary though, this power grid attack happened a couple of hours from me. And apparently it's happening elsewhere now, too? Copycats? Or an organized series of attacks?
