Cannabis keeping drug-abuse under control?

It's been a long time since I've taken an opiate of any kind. I broke my foot last week, and was given Lortab 5/500. I must admit I do like the feeling, but I only have 40 tablets, and do not anticipate getting anymore.

Cannabis has always helped me get off other drugs. Nicotine, opiates and benzos. I hope it is not too difficult to stop taking the Lortab this time, but I'll use cannabis again to help ease any withdrawl symptoms.

I'm happy other people seem to get that 'positive' effect from cannabis as well. For this reason I've picked up cannabis again, although smoking less than before. I noticed I started doing cocaine pretty freqeunt after quitting so I figured I'd be better off smoking cannabis.

I am not the biggest fan of weed, but I do find that I'm in opiate withdrawal that it can take my mind off of the Hell called withdrawal. It is mildly effective for me.....

if you're a serious addict with an addictive personality and can't just stop the shit cold, pot can be a feasible resort. it'll take your mind off the shit and act as a replacement... that's if you find that high to be suitable enough for you. it is for me.

I'm just curious what lamictal does for you? It was recommended to me when I was quiting amphetamines.

As for smoking weed and staying off drugs. Weed works for alot of ailments, sense it helps alot you dont need other drugs.

Lamictal is supposed to be a mood stabilizer for me but, I'm not quite sure how well it works --- with a psych dr who isn't understanding and blames my reproductive organ issues on cannabis use and says I don't need birth control, which I medically do, gets totally screwed with. It's useless taking two expensive medications that are canceling each other out. It is an anti-convulsant so perhaps it was prescribed to keep you more stable and lessen any chance of seizures? No idea.

Its still unfortunate that legally they want you to use a specific subset of drugs to help your ailments, and weed isn't one of them.

For the people saying an addiction is an addiction, this site is about harm reduction, not abstinence. Yes an opiate addiction and a cannabis addiction are both technically addictions, but one can cause less of a harmful impact on the person socially and economically and is easier to maintain whilst functioning in society for a lot of people. Life isn't always black and white - there are degrees of problem drug use and I think sometimes people just need to be a bit more realistic about things.

You can pull anecdotes out of a hat, but for most people if they had to choose between a cannabis addiction (or habituation, I should say) and alcoholism or opiate dependence they would choose the former. This doesn't mean that I'm advocating being a pothead though, obviously.

^ I agree. Opiate addiction is a punch to the dick. Comparatively, I have always been confused why the two don't have differing names, as the definition for the word "addiction" is rather vague. On the other hand, "happy", for instance, has varying degrees of emotion, such as "ecstatic". I s'pose this is an error with the majority of people's understanding of addiction. Just because the two share the same term does not at all put them in the same ballpark.

I find that when I have weed, I drink less and crave other drugs less intensely as well.
However, if I have weed and have been drinking, for example, I find that I want to smoke. this is most likely due to the fact that I often engage in boht activities simultaneously.

Marijuana def allows me to have less cravings for pills. To be honest I am a pillhead and I will always be. I love my opiates and benzos...occasional amphetamines but all I know is if I'm able to buy pills I will.... I had a time where I was into heavy using well last year but luckily I've gotten a lot better. I cut down my use and marijuana helps because whenever I have the urge to get high I just can hit my bong and know oh I don't need those oxy's anymore and no I don't have to smoke another roxi (yes bad but I love smoking roxicodone but I don't smoke any other pills). Marijuana calms me down and cuts my cravings for other drugs as well. I know if I stopped smoking weed I would be bored and thinking a lot about getting other drugs... I can easily be sober though and I have been it's just I don't want to be at times... Marijuana allows me to keep things in check though. I don't even smoke everyday anymore but I'm still okay.

Oh for sure - when I smoke weed, I don't (or, 'feel' that I don't) need to take as much oxy (or whatever opiate I have at the moment): I don't notice as much when the w/d's begin, when the 'high' starts to fade, when it's time to 'redose' my opiates, etc. Also, the same thing goes for my benzos - I take benzos (prescribed, just like the oxy) for anxiety and sleep. When I smoke weed at night, I don't take as many mgs of lorazepam/clonazepam/or temazepam. Typically I cut my dose of benzo in half.

I am really happy I started to enjoy cannabis again, after a 4 (or so) year hiatus - my tolerance, instead of continuing to skyrocket, has steadied. I now have the chance to chip away at that nasty opiate addiction (in time...).
