Hi. I'm a stage 3 lung cancer patient that has been on low dose of methadone for a hip/knee chronic pain issue for the last 5 years. I want to stop taking methadone because the side effects are ruining my ability to complete my bucket list. The sweating, the weight gain and the fatigue ate worse than the chronic pain. I went to a detox when I was taking 25mgs/day and all they did was mask the withdrawal with suboxen. Once I got home and the sub wore off I ended up in an ambulance with orthostatic hypotension and severe withdrawal. They put me back on 15mgs of methadone and here I am a year after detox...still on 15mgs. I know it's a low dose but when I try and cut it down I can't take the withdrawal. I can have Opana because of my cancer pain (radiation fibrosis) but I was wondering if there's a way to replace methadone with another opiate (like the Opana) and not go thru withdrawal(even tho I will then have to wean off the Opana). Regular opiate withdrawal I heard is less painful then methadone withdrawal. What's the best opiate to use in place of the methadone? I can stay on methadone until I die if I wanted. Hell, I can have any pain meds I want because of my cancer but I have travel I want to do before I die and the methadone doesn't make me feel "normal" like people say. It makes me tired and cranky and gaining weight. I want off! I tried just stopping and I felt like I was going to die. The suboxen was great but I don't want to be on that either because that will eventually make me feel terrible too won't it? Any advice would be appreciated. ✌️ D

I feel like almost any opiate is going to have some crappy withdrawls, but some will be less harsh than others. Ones like Opana and dilaudid, and even Methadone will probably be worse to come off of rather than say, a Lortab 5mg. I'm thinking that if I were you I would probably ask for some low dose percocet from your doctor and just take those as needed daily because you don't need to make yourself deal with the pain, that would be miserable, but also maybe you shouldn't be on the heavy stuff... if that makes sense. Regardless, talk to your doctor and deep down you will know what's right for you. Also, I've just about everything so if you have any further questions feel free to msg me.
