Canada v. America

I speak Spanish and English. Those are the two languages of the Americas IMO. Portugesse and French can go back to Europe. Especially when french Canadians are so uptight about "losing their langauge" that they pass aparteid style laws regarding the public display of English.

As far as superpower go most 1st world and many 2nd world nations could stomp the shit out of Canada in most respects (economically, militarily)

It's hard to move to Canada. They don't want Americans taking their jobs and mooching off their health care system.

I wouldn't exactly call it mooching. Their badass healthcare comes at a price. Taxes are a lot higher than what we pay.

yah on more then one occasion but who has thanked canada for alanis moriset, nelly fertado , or even avril la whatever - who are we growing here? britney spears, jessica sympson? well we did raise norah jones I think.....yummy

If you want a nice laid back easy going small town atmosphere let me suggest something to you that not a lot of people will, move to Saskatchewan, or somewhere else on the prairies.

Its cheap cause everyone who was born here just wants to move to Calgary or Vancouver. We have the lowest utilities in the country. Theres lots of jobs, I've never had to look for one and I've been steadily employed since I was 17. Our pot, though not BC quality, ain't bad at all and if you know the right hook ups it is BC weed. We have tons of natural resources, oil, coal, more uranium than almost anywhere in the world (though no nuclear reactors) lots of forrests (all up north), tons of lakes, and clean air.

Don't know if this sways you one way or another but we are the most socialist state in North America, we started health care, the government runs all insurance and utilities which keeps them very low.

Just keep in mind that Canada is the worlds second largest country and is as diverse as any where on the planet, so have an open mind. People in the rest of Canada barely even view the large metropolitan areas (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal ect ...) as parts of our Canada, to us it might as well be the US.

Malice- the French were in Canada before the British. To prevent the French from trying to take down the newly formed British colony, Canada's first independent government decided to share some power with the French, and as a result the country is officially bilingual. 99.999% of Canadians have no problem with this. To live in Québec and bitch about having French everywhere is like living in Alberta and bitching about English being everywhere. Some people just like to bitch I guess.

Draist- if you ever get a chance, you should check out the sand dune national park in the far nothern tip of Saskatchewan. Apparently it's a bitch to get to, since you have to pass through Uranium City and permits are required. But once you're there, you're a two hour flight away from anything even close to civilizaiton and right in the middle of some of the most unusual but beautiful scenery in the province. It's high up on the list of places that I really want to see in Canada (that I haven't had a chance to see yet).

And the most socialist state in North America? How about the only one? Until either last year or the year before it was rated by the UN as the best country in which to live. Period. We've slipped to third I think, but it's still pretty damn good. Apparently there's a problem with some letter-opening, and the whole First-Nations discrimination issues. No country is perfect I guess.

Here's me being an arrogant yank, but I'm sorry the usa could snap it's collective finger and Canada would disappear. Call me an asshole, but most nations don't become superpowers without stomping some throats and Canada ain't no superpower.

you're an idiot. just because one nation could "snap its collective finger" and have another disappear, doesnt mean it ever will. these types of thoughts are laughable, and highlight just how trigger happy some of you can be. "another country is better than us??! well we'll stomp them good". fucking dumb.

you cant stand that we actually have a BETTER place to live, so you rationalize by saying you have more military or economic might. well guess what, if you have ten times the population, then OF COURSE you have more might. doesnt mean its a better place to live though ;)

Dave I believe you're talking about the Athabasca sand dunes. It is probably at the top of the list of places I must see before I die. Problem is there are no roads anywhere near there, there isn't even a winter road to Uranium city anymore, everything has to be flown in.

Last year I went to the sand dunes at lake Defienbaker at sunrise on about 7 gram of mushrooms with my 2 best friends, had to hike in pitch black with no signs and very little idea of where we were going for over 2 hours. Got lost and finally made it to the dunes just as the sun peaked and could see deer running across the sand. Was a side of Sask I had never seen before. It was the single best moment of my life at the time, but whenever I'm on a lot of mushrooms it seems like the best moment of my life.

Do you think you could fucking chill for a second?

The superpower bit was a retort to a Canadian a-wipe that going off about how the US and Canada are politically, economically and militarily matched, which there not.

I never said that meant it was a worse place to live, just that I've met quite a few asshole Canadians. *adds another to the list*

Or unless you get all reactionary and misinterpret something I typed as me bad mouthing all of Canada when I really was bad mouthing a select few Canadian people.

I don't get what was so offensive anyway, you guys are being too sensitive.

Thanks Draist, I couldn't for the life of me remember the name. I saw a travel show where they sent a crew with an ultralight up there and I was just amazed.

And Malice, you did deserve it. I was just trying to be polite ealier. Day_for_night has a knack of saying what everyone is thinking. You don't like French Canadians for whatever (IMO faulty) reason, we get the point.

I'll take peace, (relative) freedom, (for the moment) clean air/water/etc and not having to worry about getting shot at school over paranoid militarist warmongering any day.

Now, to try to bring the thread somewhere near to back on topic...

It can take several years and a bunch of money to become a Canadian citizen, but it isn't as bad to become a landed immigrant. It's just the first step, but it means that you have all the basic rights as a citizen, but I think that there is a slight difference in the taxation rates and I'm not sure if you can vote. Any Canadian immigration lawyers out there please feel free to correct me.

Either way, it's been said before that the student visa is the easiest way to get your foot in the door, and getting your landed immigrant status is the best way to stay until you can get your citizenship. In fact, AFAIK you need to be a landed immigrant for a certain period before you can even apply for citizenship.

Regardless, it's not anywhere near as involved to beocme a citizen in Canada as it is elsewhere. As long as you're serious. Just look into Swiss citizenship requirements as a comparison.

[edit - no personal attacks] All I did was offer some light hearted criticism about some of my experiences with some Canadians/Canadian culture.

You on the other hand took the generalizations to an extra low and spiteful place:

So you still want to say that there's no assholes in Canada as you stand as a shining example?

You can't vote if you only have landed immigrant status, you need to be a Canadian citizen. Apart from that, I believe you have all the same rights as citizens, not sure about the taxes though.
