CANADA: Plan for minimum, mandatory drug sentences draws fire

Relax. This happens every few years it seems. I started smoking in 1971.
These laws are aimed at gangs in Toronto , Montreal and Vancouver and where ever else they have gang trouble. I've heard Winnipeg is the murder capital of Canada per capita.

Dude, I agree with you in some ways, if we were only talking about people who smoke weed and take drugs..Unfortunately the government and media connect drugs and violence.....they try to argue that if the drugs wern't around there'd be no violence....but thats just not true....this is about the seperation of drugs and weapons. If drugs were regulated by the government, like alcohol is, there would be no gang violence (at least not associated with that paticular market). Look at Al Capone and the whole boot legging industry before the government decided to take the taxes for themselves .....Unfortunately drug dealing is associated with violence. But that is only because the government chooses not to regulate the drug trade and leaves it up to the gangs and black market.
Weed is the first thing that should be legalized....but in my opinion it really doesn't matter what drug someone is taking. It's their body and they have the right to do to it what they want........all drugs should be legalized and regulated, and the government should collect taxes on any drugs that may have an effect on the total health care costs in the long run....(heres a whole other question...do taxpayers want to pay the med bills for people who smoked ciggarettes and kill themselves? Or are they human and say..."Fuck! people make mistakes! (smoking, over-eating, etc)...I'm here to help provide basic human needs.. even if you did it to yourself..)"

I'm an addictions councellor who works at a methadone clinic in Canada. I have seen people fill their veins with liquid that is somewhat suspect when it comes to quality lol...but when it comes to high quality, clean drugs... (and in my experience there is very little difference between a person who shoots decent smack and a person who smokes a joint or a ciggarette, Really) what is the difference?? (and I'm not talking about addiction potential...I'm talking about damage to your body....A pretty sterile syringe or shot of diamorphine verses SMOKING just about anything... Injecting pharmaceutical grade diamorphine/morphine/hydromorphone etc. is less harmful than smoking tar and poison chemicals into your lungs. Doc never says smoke...but he sticks ya with a needle....

I really hope this doesn't pass, but I'm not as hopeful as some and there is increasing pressure from the states to tighten drug laws.....just look at all the new regulations regarding precurssors and products containing ephedrine and gbl. There are very few small meth lab busts in Canada, and there was no need to regulate the sale of consumer ephedrine products. Most of Canada's homemade meth is manufactured in large scale labs.

I've been away from Canada for a long time, but Harper is aligned with evangelical christians, no ? In my experience, those folks like to crack down. They're not too concerned with the cost of policing and/or law enforcement, or protecting personal liberty.

This will never fucking pass. The bloc, liberals and NDP will have a fucking firestorm over this shit. People don't realize that stevies days are getting more numbered by the minute and once he is out so are his policies.

Im not too worried anyway cause im from the rock and we where the only province to not vote in a conservative member in the federal election. Also the drug market is pretty wide open here and people rarely get convicted for drug offences.

It won't affect us much since where almost a different country anyway.

I'm also from NL! I agree with what your saying, 10 years ago I used to spend every friday and saturday drinking on george street. I still go down every once in a while but it blows my mind how much easier it is to get good coke and E off the street! I stay away from the coke these days but my god is the E ever high quality! Last week I got 4 orange glocks for $20!! The only thing you can't get on george street anymore is good pot!

10 years ago coke didn't exist on my radar at least, now its everywhere.

haha you can never stop canadians from smoking weed ! its part of our heratige ! half the country does it !

why ? why is my question. Canada is a progressive country, why can't our drug policy be as progressive as the citizens that live in this country? If this is passed its a big step backwards. I am going to write my MP about this issue. Not that really does anything, but i have no other options really. Why oh why are the conservatives running this country . The old people need to die off.

The above posters are right about the quality of mdma in this country. Unbelievable for the most part! and cheap ! CHEAP! cheaper than good quality weed in some cases!
