A friend told me about someone using one of those cheap plastic handheld nitrous crackers and having it explode in their hands and injure them

Personally I use one of the heavier, metal crackers. I'm not sure what exactly it's made of but it's very sturdy and I can't imagine it bursting like one of the plastic devices, but is there a danger of this? Maybe this is totally ridiculous/paranoid but the thought of it exploding in mine or anyone elses hands is terrifying!!
Thanks

It's highly unlikely for a steel cracker to burst.

Plastic ones will get brittle much quicker than steel or aluminum will and are orders of magnitude more likely to burst.

Never heard about a cracker exploding - I have heard about the plastic seals on some of the dispensers shattering. If your doing ,canister to balloon - then not a problem. If however your doing canister to mouth - this could cause major problems.

A metal cracker would not possibly explode. The only possible danger, in my experience, could be freezing your hand. If you hold it carefully this shouldn't be an issue. But when you are doing many whippits at a time and cracking them constantly, combined with the numbing effect of the Nitrous it can be easy to not notice that your hand is constantly getting frozen in parts until later when you notice part of your hand is sore/red. I would imagine that this done repeatedly (ie, daily/weekly) could result in nerve damage to the hand.
