As far as I've read, caffeine is fairly performance-enhancing and not harmful at small doses. We're talking one cup in the morning, and no more. Or a coffee drink with one shot of espresso. But people like to chase that little lift, and that's where the dosages get high (4+ cups/day, like the article says), and the health risks come into play.
I find coffee to have diminishing returns, like most common drugs (definitely marijuana!), and redosing induces only stress, not the 'perk'.
You can wear your adrenal glands out proper with a lifetime of caffeine abuse.
