bye bye, red light district :(

I'm gonna hafta get over to Amsterdam but it starts sucking completely.

I have a prostitute fetish but the prostitution here in the USA is as gamy, dirty, sketchy and illegal as the drug trade.

I mean for real, it's been my dream since I was like 9 to have sex with one of those window prostitutes (well, it started as a French whorehouse fantasy, but eventually evolved once I learned more about Amsterdam).

This is why they're doing this - because foreigners think they can come in and treat Amsterdam like a circus. If you really take off your Amsterdam-worship glasses, you'll see that you can do just as much in the states. Ever been to a strip club? The blowjobs are great and you don't have to pay for a $1000 plane ticket and $10 hamburgers. Amsterdam is an extremely awesome city for reasons other than blowjobs and weed and I think the govt is trying to make a statement with legislation like this. Like other posters hinted at above, the realities of prostitution aren't as simple as free-market economics - making it illegal might be a stretch but in reality all this is doing is a) allowing ex-prostitutes to take advantage of an excellent social welfare system and b) allowing them to continue their trade without being subject to NL taxes which are like 40-50%.

This post is a bit off-focus because I've been drinking, but honestly, is prostitution and weed what this city is all about? It has a rich history as an economic powerhouse and the atmosphere is cool even if you aren't getting your dick sucked constantly while smoking blunts in a coffeeshop. This is the govt's way of saying this with legislation. They aren't going to be like the U.S. and start putting prostitutes and clients in prison.

It's only 8:00pm here in N. Europe (james bond doesn't reveal exact location :l), although if it were earlier I suppose I would be drinking just the same. And it is normal to feel that way, my view is basically the same: 5 EUR pills of x and off the wall clubs, go amsterdam! but I the city itself is quite peaceful and beautiful, rich with history and excellent govt and economy. The drugs wear off and $500 blowjobs (with condom on) get old, but the city remains and I think people need to realize that. Or stay in the U.S., where things (except x) are much cheaper and just as easy.

Oh man, I was back in the states for christmas and the sun was like GOD. But yeah, I moved for an exchange semester last september and decided to stay. I wanna move to Amsterdam although first i need money, since i can't get a prostitution visa anymore. :(

Nice job of regurgitating academic texts. The problem lies in the inability to apply critical thought to this type of information.

The drain of social security on the "younger workforce" would be more than compensated for by the cessation of social programs that service unwanted children, this of course would include for example Blue Cross & Blue Shield, foodstamps, homeless family shelters, etc.

A declining birthrate would be a fucking blessing. For further info:

You do realise that a lot of the women working in the red light district don't choose it freely though yeah?

Just because it's legal doesn't mean there are no pimps etc involved, some of the women are still forced into it.
 
I'm fully aware of that - but making it illegal won't do anything but make that worse. And I'm not supporting anything like that, only voluntary prostitution.
