Brag about your switch to a healthier lifestyle! vs. "That's a bad habit"

Once I got out of HS and ran out of things to do as far as sports and stuff I started to get real bad off on drugs

Easiest way for me to remedy that would be to redicate my life to being healthy. I dont play sports really still but I work out, do cardio all the time. Just things to stay active physically.

Most of my time is spent dieting and working out to look good, which consumes most my time and keeps my drug use under control

I have discovered that I enjoy the challenge of running in the woods.

oh me too, i grew up in a mountainous, forested area. my friends and i fully exploited the fact that we were champion sprinters through rocks and trees and cops, well, werent.

i went from junkie to alcoholic to bodybuilder/powerlifter to martial artist...

my transformation is far from complete. though i love all the memories of the days of destroying my body, i regret the damage done. i know my energy levels would be way higher if i diddnt spend many years poisoning myself for fun.

Well, think of the flip side, if you didn't spend those years using drugs, your mind would be in a very different place today. I'd say it's not likely that you would have at all the same outlook on life... Look at the positives man!

As an aside, I wonder how many ex-heavy drug users get into fight training after their honeymoon with drugs. There seem to be a few ex-heavy user, marijuana using, self defense lovers on this forum... myself included.

Cardio literally 7-8x a week. I don't see it so much but others have mentioned my healthier body and glow. :)
Drinking way less and focusing on my future.
WAY less nasty food - more grilled and baked chicken, salads, legumes, sparkling water, fruit, local 97% meat and whole wheat pasta.

Bad habits I am killing:

Masturbation / porn / sex
Processed food
Excess stimulation/attention (Internet, Facebook, video games, text messaging, etc.)
Drugs
Music
Preoccupation with possessions

Goal: Zero exceptions.

Right now I feel comfortable with zero music/drugs. The first three are still difficult but I am making great progress and refuse to get too down on myself when I give in. With food I'm about 90/10 as far as healthy v unhealthy, so I'm satisfied with that.

Masturbation is a bitch, considering I'm a horny 22-year-old male, but I'll accomplish that no matter how long it takes.

I'm getting rid of my phone in a couple of weeks. Selling my mp3 player, GameCube, and limiting Facebook to once a day; my only major Internet-related vice is StarCraft. (el oh el) And instead of hoarding all my old books I'm giving them to the libary, only keeping one or two with me at a time. The only non-hygienic possessions I have are a basketball, some mats for stretching/exercise, my computer/phone, and my food. =P

^ You should view the movie The Safety of Objects. Gets pretty deep about how we "need" all these things in our life.

Also, don't beat yourself up about not having any exceptions--You have to live a little. :)

I know I eat about 80% organic and pretty healthy, and typically don't eat "late." However, I do make exceptions--Last night (well, this morning around 2 AM) I went to Denny's (a sit-down chain restaurant known for cheap greasy fare). :p Granted I got a veggie burger with fries and onion rings, which isn't horribly unhealthy, none of it was organic or healthy. :p

Exactly. And don't forget; you would have burdened your body in a different way if not with drugs. It may have been mental burdening or physical. We all burden our bodies, sometimes more than others. But the damage we do, in the end, is equal to what we have received from it.

It is PERFECTLY fine to masturbate. It's a basic human quality. We are animals in the animal kingdom. We have urges. It is safe to keep the urges under control by satisfying them every once in a while. The people that keep their sexual urges under control are usually considered prudes. ;P

It's important to give yourself a break from your exertions. It needs time to recover (MINIMUM of 24 hours). Otherwise, congrats on keeping up with the regime! You'll be glowing like a lantern in no time! :)

^ I've read pretty extensively that it's ok to do the cario I'm doing nearly every day. I usually take a day off once every 10 days or so and I know I should probably change that to once every 7 days. I don't do nearly as much lifting, which, is what I've read you really need to take breaks for. Am I completely off base?

Daily cardio is fine, as long as you eat and rest properly so that your body can heal.

Ok, thanks guys. I'm not working out today (the gym is closed, the parks are packed and it's the 4th =D).

glad to hear that about the cardio. i do cardio 5-6 days a week, and try to be very active in listening to my body when i'm fatigued so i don't catch an injury. definitely not the business.

amor: what kind of cardio are you doing?

BTW, anybody who thinks that they are doing something "wrong" by eating late should stop worrying right now as there is absolutely nothing wrong with eating anything late at night, meal frequency makes absolutely no difference to fat gain/loss and time of consumption certainly makes no difference - the only dubious, questionable studies to claim these falsities have since been condemned by the damning evidence on the contrary - it just makes no sense.

There are so many myths in the health industry, it's pretty disgusting that alot of them are willing to keep on going with these lies, usually in order to plug a product. Like the myth that the body can only "absorb" 30g of protein in one go - completely untrue.
It's insane that anybody would even say that, had they even bothered to read the relevant research.

You will not get fatter by eating carbs or fatty foods at 1am compared to 1pm. This is a ridiculously false notion propagated by foolish "fitness guru's" and internet warriors alike.

The only thing that makes a discernible difference to overall weight gain is total daily caloric intake.

KamMoye: It is very difficult to actually truly overtrain. Especially with cardio. If you feel fatigued, sick, dizzy, ill, nauseous, not hungry and restless then you are overtraining and just need rest, but I highly doubt cardio 5 times a week will lead to you actually overtraining.

Lifting 5 days a week, 45-60 minutes a day = Obsession, narcissistic, need psychiatric help

Watching tv while eating potato chips for 6 hours a day = Normal, healthy, hobby

Getting drunk and not remembering anything you did = Awesome, cool, badass

^How most idiots feel about it.

I like your posts attempt, the whole "carbs after x" and "fat makes you fat" broscience that is spewed around and STILL believed by MILLIONS is disheartening and ridiculous.

I saw some zero fat candy today...cool, only 60 grams of sugar and 1 gram of protein. Must be healthy though, zero fat.

Or those special protein shakes that are marketed towards women. 8 grams of protein and 20 grams of sugar, and people still fall for this shit

^ Just stop caring about it dude, it'll make you a cynic if you don't. Just be happy you aren't getting suckered like so many are :D

Hehehe. It's a funny world, innit.
Yeah a friend of mine's mum actually sells these products that are supposed to be healthy and whatnot because they contain herbal extracts (that most likely do not contain anything active anymore) and are supposed to aid weight loss, but are packed with sucrose/dextrose (alot of people see a supposedly fancy word like this and skim over it - hey, it aint sugar right? 8))

But yeah - the best thing to do is just be glad you are enlightened to the ways of the world and can now progress to a better, healthier and happier life of longevity and sexiness.

I lol'd. Had a lady come through my line (cashier) with all "low fat / no fat" options of all kinds of junk foods. I asked her why she buys this. She says so she can stay trim.

Just had an obese woman come through yesterday that hadn't eaten in "three days". She says she's dieting. I corrected her and told her she was fasting and ending off on a double cheeseburger from McDonald's probably isn't the best way to start a fast. She laughed, but had nothing to say.

I am very guilty of overeating. I tend to binge eat a couple times a week or so. However, I do this with the knowledge (however, not the mindfulness) of what is healthy for me. I wish I could share the information. Most people here wouldn't want to hear anything of it.

My aunt is on the HCG diet, I would like to add. Its useless when taken orally, they charge you 300$ and send you a bunch of bs "HCG" and their diet says you must eat 500 calories a day.

My mother heard of this and wants to jump on the bandwagon, she won't believe me no matter how much progress I make or the facts I bring up, UGH!!!!!
