Body/Soul

What do you mean?

Well the question is a bit basic, I mean if you make it a bit more substantial you might get the kind of answers that you want. The topic area is vast.. if you focus it down a little more it might be better, is all I'm saying.

I just posted a similar question in this forum. I have found that it is absolutely possible to experience what is often termed OBE or astral projection, and I have done so both through sober meditation and through entheogen-infused meditation. Whether or not done metaphysical component is literally leaving my body (or even if this vitalist view has any empirical evidence to suggest the existence of a 'soul') or whether it's just a result of brain chemistry, is up for debate. I can even (begin to) induce the experience driving down the highway. Anywhere that you can breathe deeply and focus, without any distraction, it is possible. But one curious thing I've experienced every single time is that it is accompanied by a rock hard boner. Anyone else experienced this? It's completely nonsexual and happens naturally, every time I begin to move my spirit body.

well, what is the soul?
nobody has a soul in the first place. if you mean soul as in entity or a self, you have no self, so you cannot detach yourself from anything as you are not a thing. you are a stream.

what you do with meditation is to calm the mind and make him stop his constant thinking.

you use mindfulness on the body to establish stillness in your mind.
mindfulness is knowing without judging. so you follow the breath and observe the breath without any judgments, fully aware and concentrated in the present moment.
remember, theres no you who meditate. theres only concentration, but not you. you have to let go of that illusion of you in order to let go of your thoughts and get fully concentrated and mindful.

once fully concentrated, you can say you fully detach yourself from your body as no thoughts allow the body to be ''real'' or even exist.

Its impossible to know that. I don't really believe in an eternal soul inhabiting a temporal body, but as with most religiously originated concepts, there is no way to know. Again, I thought buddhism was wary of absolutes...?

It's a bit complex, as everyone has an ego, which is very real. Some also never get over it, and some come to this world to develop it more, because it's useful for physical life. It enables you to influence your surroundings more easily which can be helpful.

I feel quite the opposite - a deep sense of oneness and tranquility with myself whilst meditating. I don't see the benefit of detaching soul from body. That's what death is for.

no self, annata, is one of the three basic fact and marks of existence: impermanence, suffering/ duhkka/ insatisfaction and annata.
theres no you, its all imagination created by your thoughts.

about meditation, indeed it really disolve the ego as by stopping your thoughts and concentrate in the present moment, the ego hasnt any much nutriments. You cannot follow the breath and think about you. so while you meditate, if fully concentrated, the you dissolves and the ego also disolve.

the ego is also a illusion though and is nothing real either. we all have ego, besides arahant, but the solidity of the ego isnt true. the ego is a construction of the mind.

I think the strength of the ego is dependent on many things, like the kind of biology you're born into. People can have stronger nervous systems/survival-instincts which can make them more dominant. Also, experiences in life can influence how it developes.

the ego is manly created by your thoughts. the ego is not real in the absolute sense.

nothing about biology, your brain or whatever and everything about your mind. if you believe you are a entity, you create all sort of ego system to try to prove your solidity and your existence. Your mind is attached to believing he is something solid, but in reality, everything is in flux all the time. the you from yesterday is not the you from now. all that ever exist is the present moment and what your mind do right now. all the rest is imagination. the past is all imagination, its done, over and the you from yesterday is also gone.
theres no self in anything, no entity. this illusion of a self is created by you, your thoughts, your desire, your rememering, your judgments, your ill wills, but manly about what you think, either about the past, the future, ect

The semantic distinctions of what the components of our being are, are unimportant. You're asking if there are methods you can use to travel outside of your body. The answer is yes.
