I lifted this straight out of the Beach-Party review thread - it warrants its own topic, thoughts welcome.
************************************************
I hate to bring up a sour point in all this revelery - I was actually going to wait and post a new topic specifically relating to this but being as Schizo's made reference to it above its an easy excuse to get it out in the open...
Quote:
I don't see why we Bluelighters get such a bad rep... People saying that we're "Elitist cunts" The Beach Party just blows that out of the water.
That must have been the nicest bunch of people I've ever met... Elitist cunts my arse!!!
/EndQuote
A few ppl were in attendance at le` Beach that werent BL members or at least had read it a few times and didnt have registered nick names. Before they arrived I pre-empted at least a few of the things they would encounter and told them that when asked 'Are you a bluelighter' to respond 'Nah, friend of Phils, I've read it a few times though' and / or something akin to this.
On Sunday / Monday, the people that werent BL'ers all individually expressed to me at one point or another, that they could'nt believe the way quite a lot of 'Bluelighters' had reacted to them when they announced they werent actually part of BL.
Basically:
Person 1: Hey ! Im <nick> on Bluelight! Who are you?
Person 2: Hi! Im not actually on Bluelight, but im <name> - Pleased to meet you.
Person 1: Hey cool! *walks off*
Not only did the non-BL'ers receive this response from at least 10 or more people, I even saw it happen in front of me.
The really ironic thing is that most of the BL'ers at the beach party hadnt even met any other Bl'ers before or been to a gathering like that.
BlueLight is a harm-minimisation message board, dedciated to furthering knowledge and therefore safe conduct regarding drug usage of illicit / natural and associated substances. Secondly its got a social back-bone thats a hell of a lot of fun and really has some amazing people in and around it. *BUT* It's not a badge to wave around and say 'Hey yeah - look at me im cool' like a new t-shirt or $250 shoes.
I apologise if I'm sounding really harsh in all this, but whatever your personal agenda, always remember whats going on. If your going to start standing under the BlueLight umbrella, realise that each time you take an action, it represents everyone else thats standing beside you, now and in the future.

This i think is a very interesting topic, i didn't know what it meant in the other thread about 'elitist cunts' so i would like to hear other peoples opinions on all this. I really dont think i am like that but i can see how it can happen... I mean especially for people who havn't met BLers before, non-BLers just dont appear as interesting i guess :) No offence to them... but i really can see how this would be a problem.

Totally agree - I've seen this happen too (in fact we were talking about it just this weekend at earthcore - who would have thought it'd actually be happening as we spoke).
I wouldn't say this applies to bluelight as a whole - it's a smaller percentage than that (I'm not going to guess though). This is actually one of the major reasons I never introduce myself as Pleonastic and why I'm reluctant to even mention it at all... I don't want to be treated differently because all of a sudden people realise they've met someone "famous" in a sense.
I realise that there's probably reverse elitism too - that a lot of the older bluelighters don't want to meet any of the newer bluelighters too because they're new - and if someone is only willing to tell me their bluelight name and not go through the usual 'get to know you' routine then I find it hard to pretend I'm your best friend.
What I'm trying to say is when in the real world, act like a real person - it'll help cement friendships rather than simply increase the list of people you can name without actually knowing them...
{edit}
non-BLers just dont appear as interesting i guessWhy not?!?! I'd be interested to hear a detailed explanation from all the people that believe that statement, because I find that concept mind boggling!

Too true Phil.. too true.
Ever since I joined Bluelight or started going out with Bluelighters I've noticed this, and even thought to myself on many occasions 'geez I'd hate to be a non-BLer at a BLer gathering'.. basically because they are given very little or even no recognition.
Person 1: Hey ! Im <nick> on Bluelight! Who are you?
Person 2: Hi! Im not actually on Bluelight, but im <name> - Pleased to meet you.
Person 1: Hey cool! *walks off*
Sad but true, this is exactly what happens. Maybe sometimes people think they are elitists, but I don't think this is always the case...
Everyone on this board is on a similar level, eg:
-They all know other people on the board or have had some kind of communication with them
-They all have similar interests (drugs, parties, etc)
-They have all been ranting for the past month (or 4) about how good *insert party name* is going to be.
So when the date of the big party finally comes around, all these BLers are totally pumped and can't wait to put the 50 names they have in their head to faces (which is a thrill, I must admit. Especially with irc, because it means you've been talking to them for the last 4 months as well), and start chatting away about all these things they have in common, etc. But when they say hi to someone who then says they are NOT a BLer, they don't know what to say. They basically have 2 options:
-Stay and have a normal or even boring *gasp* conversation with them (and in some cases explain why the fuck they asked if they were 'blue lighter'), or
-Run off too find more BLers that they already 'know' and chatter about whatever.
It's pretty sad and unfortunate that this happens, seeing as we are such a nice bunch of people. But its hard to avoid, given the circumstances. Looking back I can even think of times when I've done it myself.
Cheers :)

good point prom.
so when are you gunna wear those stunning pink crocodile skin stilletos out to a party???
;)

RBB and Prom: Funny as that might be - lets keep this thread on topic... it's actually a good topic of discussion that hasn't been adressed before (shock horror) and some people might find it interesting...
Flame me for that comment in some other thread if you must, but lets keep this one clean...

We're probably just about all guilty of showing that kind of snobbishness at some point or other... Even me, even you Gen...
I think people need to get it through their heads that just being registered on this board doesn't confer upon you any significance what-so-ever... You were some random stranger before bluelight, and you're all still just random strangers now, you just know a little bit about each other (this doesn't mean much tho, there's still a lot about my closest friends I don't know, let alone most of the people on this board)
Everytime a Bluelight is introduced to one of my non-bluelight friends I can see they're going to ask the question "are you a bluelighter?" (Its quite amusing to watch) ...Far too many times that Bluelighter has walked away when the answer has been "no" ...I think I've only once or twice asked someone if they were a Bluelighter...
Being a Bluelighter isn't important... Being a decent and friendly person is...

Sorry darling.[edit: damn you tars]
I just find this thread rather weak in substance. I don't think the problem with the people discussed in this topic is that they're bluelighters or that they're so-called "elitist cunts", so eloquently put might I add. They're just knobs and being knobs, exhibit knob-like behaviour. Afterall, I regard myself as being somewhat elitist and I'm sure all the people I don't like would agree with me. However this doesn't deter me from talking to non-bluelighters.

ugh..elitist is such a strong word. I prefer 'socially superior'. I've evolved to a point where I don't even ask if you're bluelighter anymore, I just don't want to talk to you at all - bluelighter or not.
We can't all go around chating to people who we don't know at all. If you're at a bluelight meetup, who do you want to me? Bluelighter's of course. No time for the rave flotsam and jetsom.

heh, or it could be the other way round sumtimes. Where u dont talk to people cus they *are* a bluelighter, cus the content of conversation is based mostly about drugs. (<--generalization - there are bluelighters who talk about interesting stuff)

KompleX good point, I've many times bailed on a BL conversation because I couldn't be assed talking bout drugs. But alas the opposite has been true of myself in the past as well snobbing off someone because they weren't. But lets be serious for a moment, what we are talking about here is human nature. People will only talk to other people when there is some connection as a general rule. At a BL party BL is that connection and if your on the outside then that acts as a great disadvantage. The same could be said if you went to a 'DRANCE' party but weren't a member then you would ignored or whatever (BTW couldn't help myself taking just once piss take outta DRANCE).
Anywayz I've evolved into an all round asshole these days, so I can just about be a prick to anyone ;) .

In a way I got to agree in some way with bassy, with the hype of an "event" and you been chatting to other people going to the same event, for god knows how long and then going out to try and find them is one of the exciting things about this..
and sometimes it might be out of excitment in a way that you *do* 'snob' some other people off.. without meaning it completely
"are you a bluelighter" is often a conversation starter.. lame I know, but it is.. and if the answer is "No" unless you are a quick thinker and convo is over.. I can say I have used to be a victim of these but have improved my ways... And now, I'm the random I used to be again!! :)

I need to step in and clarify a little here because I dont want to make myself out to be Jebus or anything. After lots o consideration I realise a lot of us have been doin this 'thang' quite a while and a lot of ppl have moved past the desire to have the constant random ramblings.
When I started swinging it was in a very broad arc and able to whack into a lot of people - in retrospect I was simply annoyed about the fact that at a house party with a small group of people (under 50) - the 'BlueLight Badge' was being flashed in a way as to fuck a few people off because they werent BL'ers.
When out at parties, I no longer have much desire to speak to anyone I dont really know, BL'er or other ... Evolution of the species :)

hehe...i'm with komplex on this one....when i go out i try and avoid BL'ers like the plague... ;)
i know its a gross generalisation, but if u want to have a 2 dimensional discussion about what drugs your on, what drugs u've had, and what drugs your gonna be taking, go talk to a BL'er...plus why the hell would i want to talk about BL when i'm off my tree?!!!
hehe...if that's not jaded and cynical i dunno what is.... :)

Isn't saying that BL's only want to talk about drugs a bit of an over-generalisation? I've met BLers out before, and I don't think I ever mentioned anything along those lines to anyone! Personally, I enjoy meeting BLers just to put a face to a name and cos we have a few things in common, not just the obvious. So I think about it that way...

If anyone only wants to talk about drugs, then they deserve a snobbing as far as I'm concerned, Bluelighter or not...
However, if ~you~ don't make an attempt to steer the conversation away from drugs then don't look down on them 'cos you're not doing much to help...

one of my best mates doesn't even know how to turn on a computer. But he's usually at the meetups (old ones anyway)
And he was the ORIGINAL non bluelighter (alex to all those who know him)
Funny thing is... he thinks we're kool (internet geeks he calls us) but a lot of my other friends think bluelight is the biggest wank ever "you're meeting people from the net? GET A FUCKEN LIFE!"
so it comes from both sides.
I laugh when bluelighters are snobs... its just silly. We're geeks... geeks don't get to laugh at cool people.
;)
