Social Justice Black Lives Matter Discussion Thread

Because de-funding the police is obviously the solution, correct?

Let us all emulate Communist China, it's very fashionable these days ...

Those are the obvious "good police" we will replace our pressent system with.
The revolution will not be kind to those who are calling for it, and promoting black supremacy and racism.

"All Lives Matter" is more inclusive than "Black Lives Matter".

Cities in the USA controlled by Democrats and which are defunding the police are having murder, assault, and crime rates go sky high. Police are refusing to go to certain areas-see Ferguson effect-and actually resigning, or getting early retirement.

Let's hope that does not happen.
Yeah, these hopes turned out fantastic in the past. Seeing this kind of shit in the streets, with this kind of elite in power means only one thing, and that's what I've said will happen. Look, they've screwed the economy and only a massive war can get them out of this situation. World Economic Forum is all about "resetting the economy", and you already saw that (((they))) hoovered all the gold away, as they always do before they strike at whole nations.

So where is the gold?

"black lives matter" doesn't mean "other lives don't matter". "black lives matter" means "black lives matter too" not "only black lives matter".

if a friend told you "radiohead are awesome" would you think they were saying "radiohead are the only awesome band"?

alasdair

why is it not simply put "black lives matter too" then? was the extra "too" too much of a hassle? i believe it was intentional to get a rise out of you and make you pay attention. its strong political statement where it gets people's attention! then when you say "oh but other lives matter too" THEN they are given enough attention to actually discuss this further, and thats the main point! getting a rise, being paid attention to and cause controversy. otherwise, it just might fade away, easy

It really depends upon what lens you look at it through. It would have sounded weird and it's impact lessened to name it "Black Lives Matter, Too" when the whole reason for it was to address the portion of our population that didn't think black lives mattered, to begin with. I would imagine when the name was made, no one could foresee that type of scrutiny. In my opinion, it's an attack on an omission of a word by attempting to correlate it to mean something it was never meant to mean.

I believe you underestimate those who created the movement and laid it's foundation. The whole intent was to get attention, something done easier with a punch in the nose than an arm around the shoulders.

Seattle City Council Member Suggests Firing White Officers In Massive Reduction Of Police Department

The Seattle City Council is facing something of a dilemma in its popular pledge to cut the police budget by 50 percent. To do so would require firing a significant number of police officers, which is also popular. The problem is that the firing would be done by seniority and many of the less senior officers are black. The solution according to City Council member Lisa Herbold is simple: fire officers based on their race. While that would be the definition of racial discrimination, Herbold clearly believes that it is discrimination for a good cause. The federal courts are likely to disagree. Most notably, Herbold’s call for racial discrimination against white officers would seek to undue the work of Justice Thurgood Marshall who insisted that racial discrimination unlawful and evil regardless of the race you want to disenfranchise or discriminate against.
...
Herbold would not only refuse to promote on the basis of race but would fire officers on that basis. No test. Just a pure racially discriminatory program of terminations. Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District No. 1 (2007), Chief Justice John Roberts once declared “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.” That is clearly not the plan of Herbold and any of her colleagues who want to fire officers based on their race.

Blatant race discrimination, and Seattle leadership thinks it's perfectly legal (it isn't) and acceptable (it shouldn't be, but there is support for it).

I've considered "Life Matters" makes the most sense.

And that's pretty loaded.

well, personally i do not value human life at all and i think ALL lives do not matter. i have been suffering dealing with people 30 years of my life. all my problems, physical and psychological are all because of dealing with humans. the only time i ever had peace was when i was isolated and fasting, ignoring basic needs and social interactions. i felt so much happier isolated and fasting, and ignoring all fucking man made needs! 99% of a person's life is based solely on other people's social construct ideas and psychological exploitation. FUCK ALL LIVES! ANTS LIVES MATTER MORE!

That's a fair consideration. My thinking is if someone feels oppressed or the subject of unjust treatment due to their race, then their initial message needs to scream strength and independence - not so much equality - initially, to get the attention they need. The consideration for scrutiny with current day context wouldn't weigh as heavily, at least initially.

Some of these councils are completely going too far, in my opinion. I just saw somewhere in California, they are moving to have police officers stop doing traffic stops and have unarmed civilians do them instead. I haven't looked further into it, but hopefully the area is a very non-violent area to begin with.

"I'm writing you a citation for speeding"

"No you're not, bye"

"Damn"

The near future in progressively run cities...

Caller:
"Hello 911, someone just broke into my house with a gun and is threatening my wife!"

911:
"Someone broke into your house carrying a weapon? Due to de funding we'll send a guidance councilor over, waiting time is 3 days."

Currently in all cities...

Caller:
"Hello 911, someone just broke into my house with a gun and is threatening my wife!"

911:
"Someone broke into your house carrying a weapon? We'll have a unit over in 15 minutes, by which time the perpetrator will have pistol whipped your wife and escaped with all your valuables. please give the officer a number they can use to contact you when they never find your stuff. They won't because they'll be too busy making traffic stops and arresting black people for low level drug offenses.

This is related to various BLM issues in many ways, but comes at the debate from a completely different angle:

Interview
Siya Kolisi: 'If we educate our sons, we won’t have to protect our daughters'

The Rugby World Cup-winning captain and his wife Rachel talk about using their platform to tackle injustice – and their admiration for Marcus Rashford.

Inside Siya Kolisi’s home is a photograph of his mother when she was 17. Her skin is smooth and free from the scars she would later bear from beatings at the hands of some abusive partners. Siya does not recognise the woman staring back at him but he does remember her anguished cries as he lay awake at night as a young boy, powerless and terrified by the unseen trauma being meted out in the next room.

“I carry that pain with me today,” the Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok captain says over Zoom, his voice quiet and exasperated by the memory. His gaze is distant. He turns to his wife Rachel beside him, holding her hand, appearing unsure how much he wants to share.

“But that is why I am speaking out now,” he declares, rising in tone and stature on my screen. “That is why I am using my platform. I cannot stay silent any longer. Rachel gives me courage. She lets me know that I am more than just a sportsman.”

In March this year, Siya and Rachel launched the Kolisi Foundation to assist disadvantaged communities in South Africa hit hardest by the pitfalls of coronavirus.

“I know what hunger feels like,” Siya says. “I’ve fallen asleep to the sound of my stomach grumbling. I’ve seen my mother not know what to do except offer kind words and sugar water. That stuff is real to me. I want to make sure that kids don’t go through the same thing as me.”

Well, mal ...

We're gonna have to agree to disagree.

Fire the bad ones, hire more and actually manage them so they perform their job seems to be a much better solution in my eyes.
