^If you are that familiar with it, I'm sure you could lend quite a bit to the discussion. Your analysis and understanding of fiction are admirable and quite advanced, from what I have seen from some comments you made in F&T, especially our little discussion of "No Country For Old Men" (if you recall). It's exchanges like that that made me think that this could be a good idea in the first place, so I hope you'll lend us some of your insight and opinions when we get to the discussion phase of the book.

Really, I'm specifically asking you if you will help the club by participating in the discussion. Please? :) Pretty please with a cherry on top? :D

BLAH. why choose common books? that's no fun for anyone; at least, i sure know i hate discussing a topic five times over and then some.

FYI if you want the ebook to stick on your pda/psp/ipod (ipod comes last because apple felches teletubbies behind the scenes. didnt you ever wonder how they got those colour themes? the tubbies had kids man. apple gets those fuckers to fart out monitors like chickens shit eggs)

oh yeah here's the link http://www.planetebook.com/Brave-New-World.asp

That's why my suggestion was Ishmael, not sure if you'd label it as common per se, but whenever I try to bring it up in discussion on here or IRL, nobody's heard of it (or his other masterworks). I've read quite a few books in my day (as I'm sure we all have), and the one book that immediately changed my life I had to reread it 3 times just to soak it all in, was Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.

I think we can have fun discussing Brave New World, even more so since everyone's probably well versed (not to mention the state of the world as of late, though the Orwellian predictions seems a bit more suited, ironically enough). I think it's a good general choice for a trial run in this neat business PW started up, I honestly can't wait!

question. how exactly do book clubs work? do you just read the book at your own pace, and discuss it after everyone is done? or do you do a certain number of chapters by a deadline, and discuss things up to that point as you go along?

Aww pw, I really liked our discussion of NCfOM in Film and TV. You're right, I'll try to add something to the discussion.

vibby: most bookclubs agree on a book to read and then set a deadline to have the whole book read by. However those bookclubs are generally way different because they don't interact as much as we can on the internet. I'd suggest making shorter deadlines would be beneficial for the sake of modivation. Depending on the size of the book you could divide it into (relative to the chapters) fourths, thirds or halves.

I've read BNW, and discussed it with my wife. I look forward to discussing it, but am a little bummed that I missed out on the poll, since I tend not to hang out in Second Opinion. I think this is an excellent choice, even though Animal Farm, Survivor, or Electric Koolaid would have been good as well. Is there going to be an option to put together other recommendations anytime soon?

Although I know I've probably argued this in the past, but I think Ishmael would be a good addition to the list. That being said, another list for books would be pretty cool.

Dune
by Frank Herbert would be my choice.
