Bio-Diesel!

^^it's very easy, but a lot of people can't be bothered...

I was looking into this for a while but decided that I didn't want to trade in my "bomber high gas millage 4 cylinder nissan truck" for an old mercedes with 300,000 miles. IE you have to run biodiesel through a diesel engine.

I think the biggest potential problem with bio-fuels is the issue of feed-stock. There is NO WAY we can replace petrol with land crops...where will we grow food?

Algae farms are an interesting alternative, so is wind and solar (we would need electric engines for these though). Conservation and Armageddon might figure into the final solution as well :D

...there was a guy named Russell A. Marker. He figured out how to make cortisone out of something extracted from Mexican yams.

Neither the university nor the pharm companies would believe him. Like you say, if it was that easy...

He got himself a truck, and drove off to Mexico. He got together with some Mexicans, set up a garage lab, and just did it. He walked into some big pharm house with a big jar of the shit...

That's how Syntex Corporation was founded.

Its a great forum discussing all aspects of biodiesel.

My favorite section is the algae discussion....definitely has the most potential for BD feedstock.

The agrarian issues are definitely interesting and daunting. The rash adoption is snowballing! I find it a bit scary. However, I do believe it can still be a viable alternative, esepcially the algal and sugar-based options. Worldwatch has a program to explore how to make biofuels sustainable, I've been looking for developments in this area.

That being said, diversification of energy sources always should be a priority! We shouldn't be so stupid over again.
