In this video, Morgue explains that before humans were self aware they were bicameral.

Bicameral implies that before humans were self aware, humans were bicameral which means that one part of the brain was responsible for speaking and the other was responsible for listening and obeying. According to Julian Jaynes, people were literally commanded by a "voice in their heads" associated with the unconscious (the right side of the brain)

I believe the corpus callosum was responsible for the "disconnect" or "connect" (depending on whether you look at things from before 3,000 years ago or later) between right brain and left brain, but I cannot find information that directly supports the corpus callosum is responsible for "self awareness". It seems to be a pretty big factor, though for - that is - right brain communicating with left brain and vice versa.
