Hello.

Sorry if my english is not perfect.I am from Sweden.

I am 29 and was prescribed Bromazepam(long acting) 5 years ago for sleep problems and severe anxiety.
SSRI had noch effect on me,so many other antidepressiva the docs tried on me.
I study chemistry so I know a lot about pharmakologie.

At first 6 mg help for 2 years perfect.
Then i had to up the dose.5 years later i need 18 mg(= 40 mg diazepam) to have any effect.
Since then every evening I am very depressed. The last month its extrem severe.
If i reduce dose I cant sleep, and after 3 days of zero sleep i have to take the higher amount(18mg) again.

I tried diazepam(more depression),alprazolam(no sleep),clonazepam (more depression),oxazepam (no sleep),Z-drugs (more depression)

I have often suicide thoughts the last month,an if I reduce the dose I cant sleep.Befor benzos I often could not sleep.
So the question is are there any benzos, that help for sleep and dont make me depressed the day after.
Seroquel or Mirtazapine are no option for me,because I cant tolerate them.

I tried Chloralhydrate, which was very weak and again no sleep.
One doc said drink 4 wodka.I dont know.If i drink the next day I feel unable to work.
Is this a solution to drink or does anyone know a better benzo?

I read hear perhaps nitrazepam or flurazepam?or do they cause depression too?
I think I need a benzo because antidepressiva never worked for me.
And anything with histmin blocking action is making me also depressed the next day.

So is there any benzodiazepin for sleep without depression the next day or do they loose the effect for sleep no matter what type of benzo?
Then better every day alkohol?

Thank you very much.

Sjögren

Maybe your feeling depressed because your dependent on benzodiazapines. That is going to be rough comming off of too. When your dependent it feels like....there is no end to the sicsickness. Sorry for not giving any actual help

All sedative-hypnotic drugs (including alcohol, benzos, barbiturates, chloral, etc.) cause depression with chronic use, and there aren't any hypnotics that will last for more than a few weeks of daily use. The best course is probably to stop taking them, with a slow taper to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms. It sounds hard to believe but it's very likely your anxiety and sleep will both get better. Whatever you do don't start drinking vodka every night.

The vodka idea sounds terrible, find a new doctor if they are suggesting alcohol. While it might be effective it's pretty dirty. On the other hand, 4 shots is probably unlikely to cause too many problems. That's a lot of extra calories to be consuming though.

Despite the valium not being great, that is probably your best bet. Try to convert over to that, then taper down extremely slowly. Extremely. If you don't get out much, try going out and taking a walk, etc (nothing crazy). If you drink a lot of caffeine try cutting back by a cup or two a day, don't have to quit mind you.

Ironically, drinking 4 shots of vodka every night is much safer for you than long term benzodiazepine use. Vodka is much easier to withdraw from than benzos and will not cause the same amount of depression. Still, it is not a good solution, alcohol is not even a good sleep aid.

I had the exact same problem with benzos. I took alprazolam long term and after a while it made me so depressed I desired suicide and could barely function. I decided the only solution was to come off from it, which was hell on earth, but what else are you gonna do? Be suicidally depressed the rest of your life?

Awe man I feel your pain. Been on so many anti ds and anti psychs and a host of other crap you wouldn't believe for depression/ anxiety and panic disorder. Insomnia been the worst was hospitalized for four months last year cause I hadn't slept in over three weeks just the odd nod off.ive taken valium for seven years now for panic\anxiety but it doesn't help with sleep.but im afraid burn out is right. I think valium has me screwed up. Was on 31 tablet coctail in hospital b4 I finally got what they called sleep. Flurazepam in a high dose used to mellow me out along with the Librium an make me chatty.what a nightmare to come off though. I think we're in an era now where we rely on tablets for everything. Once your a slave to the pills you'll never be free of depression, insomnia or any of it. But that's another story. Buy some fresh kava kava not the bottled crap. Make a nice strong tea from it. That helped me once. Insomnia is hard. Zombified after another eight nights without it. Keep on keeping on though.

Does bromazepam cause depression?clonazepam did for me.
Looking for a benzo with no effect on depression.
Valium was also very bad,so chlorazepat.

a doctor suggested drinking vodka to combat your depression? a doctor? words fail me.

there's your problem buddy, find a new doctor and report your current one. that is the worst advice I've ever heard.

try and taper down your benzo consumption, but under the instruction of a new, competent doctor. I've had life-threatening fits when I came off my 2 year valium habit abruptly.

it gets better buddy, hang in there. and no vodka.

btw, orexin antagonists are now being looked into for sleep… verses gaba type sleep aids. insomnia can cause incidental type of depression in itself.

Does anyone think that phenibut could help our Swedish friend. Vodka should not be used as a substitute for anti anxiety medication in any kind.

Benzos are inherently depressing for some people, especially those with pre-existing depression. I've never been as miserable or suicidal as I was while taking etizolam daily. If you have this reaction to one benzo, it's likely you'll have it with others. There isn't much difference between, say, alprazolam and lorazepam. Duration is the biggest difference between benzos as they all act on the same receptors.

If I were you, I'd consider planning a VERY GRADUAL taper using a long-acting benzo like diazepam. Talk to your doctor first, as benzo withdrawal can be dangerous. (Heads up: withdrawal can temporarily worsen depression, but the sooner you start the sooner it will be over). I've been clean a year and am finally starting to feel like myself again.

Oxazepam (It is a metabolite of diazepam, prazepam, and temazepam,[4] and has moderate amnesic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, sedative, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties compared to other benzodiazepines.).

i used that to tapper down with now i really love it, the sleep isnt that strong tho try using either a z-drug at night or even prometazine that will make the sleep effect much strong! just never take many! that will end up with delirium.. no just the night time benzo's with 25-50mg prometazine that will make you sleepy allmost every time!

just a option and the prometazine work with all benzo's :)

"Then i had to up the dose.5 years later i need 18 mg(= 40 mg diazepam) to have any effect."

That there was your mistake, not to mention taking the stuff every day....Whenever you feel you have to up the dose, no matter what, the red light should be flashing in your head. You made a mistake, thankyou for telling so others don't make the same mistake. Benzos are not sustainable....etiz helps me sleep but NOT EVERY DAY use thankyou. I learned the hard way with alcohol, another useful substance helping sleep, but NOT EVERY DAY. Period. It doesn't work that way. Period.

Good Luck.

^Slowly taper off benzos... echo...
After a while taking them you don't sleep, get anxious, panicked, depressed..
Switching benzos / GABA antagonists is more a patch than a fix and trades one dependency for another.
In short it makes things worse, not better so the sooner you get through this rough patch the better it will get.

Perhaps your beta blocker already helps for muscle relaxant properties, but be carefull with 3-mmc / stims (Or find an other non benzo).

Also perhaps skip your latest dose off 3-mmc so you can sleep better, find something to counter brain zaps and better yet / taper / replace 3-mmc, because you need to give your brain a rest. Your depression at night/morning is most likely caused by it.

Please take stock of all advice given by many who follow your threads including the one from this fine gentleman below. Please be well. <3
