ah, the cover song. All too often used by shitty bands as a substitute for good live material or scattershot 'eclectic taste', a cover can sometimes change a mediocre original into something strange, different, beautiful.

The Pixies - Head On (Jesus & Mary Chain). They kick the subdued (though poignant) original into overdrive, best played loud.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing (Hendrix). obvious.

Johnny Cash - Down there by the train/won't back down/hurt (Waits, Petty, NIN). A whole new appreciation gleaned from renditions stripped to the core.

Type O Negative - Day Tripper/If I needed someone/I want you(Beatles). I always knew Lennon was a dark brooding genius.

Brutal Truth - Media Blitz (Germs). pure Intensity given sonic release.

Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Ventilator Blues (Rolling Stones) - dirty, raw, loud, screeching, beautiful blues.

I know there are more out there........

nofx's remake of 99 red ballons origionally done by neena in the 80's.

Sublime's remake of In Hope orgionally done by the Decendents.

Phish's rewrite of Gin and Juice origionally by Snoop and Dre.

Hahaha anything by Weird Al is going to be entertaining or really stupid but funny.

Best cover song ever is the Macha cover of Believe by Cher. He takes that song and makes it his own.

Others of note:

Sonic Youth - Superstar (The Carpenters)
Ozma - Tetris Song (Some Russian guy)
Snake River Conspiracy - Love Song (The Cure)
Nine Inch Nails - Metal (Gary Numan)
Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade - Thela Hun Ginjeet (King Crimson)
Tool - No Quarter (Led Zepplin)
Nirvana - Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie)
Smashing Pumpkins - Landside (Fleetwood Mac)

Thats all I can think of right now.

Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears for Fears)
Metallica - Whisky In The Jar (Thin Lizzy)
Jeff Buckley - Halliulah (Leonard Cohen)
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)

Jimmy Buffet (shut up, don't laugh, i'm a fla girl) does a remake of Southern Cross,by Crosby Stills & Nash. I never really cared much for the original but i love Jimmys cover of it. He owns that song.

I also like UB40's Many Rivers To cross orginally by Jimmy Cliff & their cover of Red,Red, Wine orginally by Niel Diamond, i think.

But my very favorite would be Phish's cover of Snoops Gin & Juice as dark_angel177 already mentioned. I listen to that song often. I didnt even know what most of the words were intill Phish covered it.

i know i'm missing tons of songs but that's all i can think of right now.

Sweet Jam fool what? It's a goddamn Soft Cell song. That poof Marc Boland sings it with an extra verse to the David Gray version. So there :p

One more vote for Manson's 'Sweet Dreams'. It is by far one of my favorite covers ever.

But more so than that.. one that wasn't mentioned above.. Manson's cover of 'Down in the Park'. Also quite good..

Phish has never covered Gin and Juice. Ever. Never ever ever. Never. That track was not done by moe., String Cheese, or any other jam band. I forget the actual name of the band, but they're folky/bluegrassy...michael knows the name of them. Ask him.

And dark_angel177, I'm 98 percent postive that 99 Luftballoon song was covered by Goldfinger and not NOFX. Especially since Goldfinger had it on one of their more recent albums, plus I saw them do it live when I saw them a few months ago. I don't think NOFX has ever played that song before. :\

repeat after me people. it was THE GOURDS. it doesn't even sound like phish, it doesn't sound like leftover salmon, it doesn't sound like whatever other band it's mislabelled as on your p2p program. why i have to continually say this is beyond me.

dark brooding genius yes, but if i needed someone was written by george harrison.

Manson never did Down in the Park... that's what the MP3 is listed as on P2P sharing programs

Its Deadsy. (at least i think it is..) Deady's pop/goth cover of Rush's Tom Sawyer is amazing.. I never thought the Cher bloodline would ever put out something amazing.. but frankly i like her son being the lead singer of Deadsy.. the voice fits. Their imagery is horrible though..whether it be in a show.. or a video..

Godhead--Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles)
one more vote for MSI's cover of Mr. Meth, Bring The Pain
Biz Markie-Benny and the Jets (Elton John)
Tricky-Black Steel (take on Public Enemy's Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos)
The Cardigans-Iron Man (Black Sabbath)
tUBrING-What a Dude Wants (medley take of Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, etc.)

shonen knife covering the carpenter's top of the world

lloyd cole covering leonard cohen's chelsea hotel #2

flaming lips covering neil young's after the goldrush

run dmc covering aerosmith's walk this way
