ah, the cover song. All too often used by shitty bands as a substitute for good live material or scattershot 'eclectic taste', a cover can sometimes change a mediocre original into something strange, different, beautiful.
The Pixies - Head On (Jesus & Mary Chain). They kick the subdued (though poignant) original into overdrive, best played loud.
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Little Wing (Hendrix). obvious.
Johnny Cash - Down there by the train/won't back down/hurt (Waits, Petty, NIN). A whole new appreciation gleaned from renditions stripped to the core.
Type O Negative - Day Tripper/If I needed someone/I want you(Beatles). I always knew Lennon was a dark brooding genius.
Brutal Truth - Media Blitz (Germs). pure Intensity given sonic release.
Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Ventilator Blues (Rolling Stones) - dirty, raw, loud, screeching, beautiful blues.
I know there are more out there........
