Is it safe to combine phenobarbitone (or phenobarbital) with diazepam/ Valium?

I read up on this briefly and saw something that said the phenobarb may reduce the efficacy of the diazepam. Any info appreciated. Also it should be noted there is a tolerance to benzo's but not barbituates at this point.

Also might be worth mentioning the ROA for each drug:
phenobarb - IV
valium - oral

amounts I take in future may vary, but today I took only small doses - 15mg diazepam, 90mg phenobarb (30mg oral, 60mg IV)

Toss the benzos, barbiturates all the WAY!

Why would you want to combine those (really not something you should do)

ahh okay. Never had much experience or done much reading on barbituates. Only have a small amount available.
Why are you more into the barbs rakketakke? Feels better?

Edit: and why do you not combine the two? Anyone who can answer this can go into pharmacology relating to enzyme inhibition, method of action etc...

I can't go into much detail based on enzymes, but Barbiturates are one of the most dangerous class of drugs. Benzos were created simply to replace Barbiturates. Now the reasons you shouldn't combine the two are because they're both downers and amplify the effects of one another (some sorta synergy) which leads to an increased risk of overdose. This increased risk isn't good since Barbiturates have high rates of overdose anyway. (This and most of the Barb drugs half lifes are super long make it dangerous to even take barbs the next day). Barbiturates are bad to take with any downer, but if you're taking small doses and are very careful and research...not saying I recommend it but, you can combine the two. Oh, and DO NOT DRINK. If you decide to combine the two take it slow (Or else you'll wind up like Jimi Hendrix). And don't get hooked on Barbs OR Benzos, nasty stuff.

Combining benzodiazepines and barbiturates is something that only a doctor of anaesthesia should ever do.

Due to the methods of action of benzos and barbs, when combined, they seriously synergize with one another.

Please don't do this combination. Do one, or the other, but not both.

Vary few things can safely be combined with barbs...

I always mix my benzos with fioricet which has a barbituate all though a very mild one and it makes me feel great 4mg's xanax 4 fioricets and my 1mg of suboxone and I feel great. but just dont over do it cause chances of od is greater

Benzodiazepines are in a class of drugs known as "sedative-hypnotics." A well known side effect of sedative-class drugs is depression of the central nervous system. This essentially occurs when the benzodiazepines act to enhance the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid.

Typically, GABA reduces the chances that a neuron will fire is by binding to and opening certain channels (chloride ion) on the neuronal membrane.

Benzodiazepine-class drugs will also bind to this ion channel, but do not open it. Instead, they bind to a different site on the aforementioned ion channel and when they bind, GABA is more likely to stay on the ion channel and exert a greater effect. There are three types of GABA receptors, only two of which are ion channels and only one of those also bind benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines bind to the GABA receptor called the GABA-A receptor.

Certain drugs, such as barbiturates are other drugs that interact with and bind to GABA receptors. Combining benzodiazepines with barbiturates is very dangerous due to the potential for respiratory depression and coma leading to death.

Mixing benzos and barbs is not a good idea.

Barbs are already rather dangerous; they don't have a ceiling like benzos do, and benzos greatly increase the effects of barbs. You can very easily achieve a fatal sedative overdose with barbs + benzos (just like mixing benzos and alcohol, only barbs are way the hell less forgiving than alcohol).

If you do this at all, go with a sub-recreational dose of the benzo.

It's actually pretty safe to combine the 2 your talking about, although you need to be careful like the other posters have told you. This combination is used for tapering from other benzo's somtimes, to prevent seziures and switch on to diaz.

With phenobarbitals long half life and weakness compared to other barbs, and diazepams long half life and weakness compared to other benzodiazapines. You should be fine, but excercise caution.

barbs and benzos both affect GABA firing from the snapse differently- barbs produce a sustained firing of GABA while benzos increase the frequency of GABA firing.

mixing the two with these two distinct mechinisms have a dangerously synergistic effect, so if combing the two great caution should be observed as overdose is very easy.

plus barbiturates are dangerous enough by themselves.
