Narc is also the term used for an informant. If someone gets caught with drugs, they may turn in the person they bought the drugs from to lighten their prison sentence. Sometimes the police (or DEA, or whatever) will keep the person around for a while to bust other individuals.
It's easier to scare someone already in "the scene" into becoming an informant than it is to place a police officer in "the scene."

Missapple, sorry you had to pay for an international call. To save everyone else a dime I went to the internet yellow pages and since the original smurf had an IP address to a california government server I posted the number to the LA police department's detective division. I figured he may like to phone a friend, and since there are soooo many John's in the world, it seemed like a good name to use.
